Waking up unable to breathe - a little wheezing....?
|
For the last year I've been wheezing from time to time, nothing major just a little upon exhalation. I figured it was a slight bit of athsma or allergies. My doc's never hear it as it is random.
Today I was resting and I woke up unable to breathe. I shot up and gasped for air (sounded like a sick seal) and then finally was able to get a breath. I tried to go back to sleep but had another little gasp and gave up. Now my chest is tight and I'm breathing a little shallow.
I don't have sleep apnea, do not snore. This is the first time this gasping for air has happened.
Any thoughts - how urgent is it that I see a doc (It's Friday night).
Thanks! Additional Details PS - One thing of note is that the wheezing happens on inhalation as well as exhalation - almost more when I inhale. Does that make a difference in what it could be?

You can still have sleep apnia even though you don't snore, you could also have a heart arithmia, which means your respiratory system slows or sometimes stops while sleeping, in any case, you should go to a specialist since your current doctor doesn't seem to really keep your best interest in mind

Not sure what it is, but it wouldn't hurt to have an inhaler on hand. Go to the emergency room if it gets worse.

It sounds like the onset of full-blown asthma.
I suggest you see your doctor ASAP (it's not like you're going to die right away, but breathing is kind of important...) and get examined for possible asthma. Chances are once you're prescribed an inhaler or an asthma-controlling medicine like cingulair, your symptoms will disappear.

Well I think you should see a doctor as soon as you can, and go to an emergency room NOW. Depending on the severity and the frequency of the symptoms asthma can be classified in different stages. So maybe when you went to see your doctor he did not hear anything because you were between the attacks.
In asthma, the air you breathe can get in but it can't come out, that is why you hear the wheezing on your exhalation, do you cough? that is another symptom that can tell you may be having an attack.
Asthma is a condition that should get appropiate treatment as soon as possible. Don't wait any longer, you should get some spirometry done, some chest Xrays.
Hope you will get better soon.
