I quit just over a year ago in November. the smell is just so gross to me now and I feel so much better on my days off. I still have to breathe it in at work and I can tell the difference between days I work and days I don't.

Doing well thanks.. Glad you brought it up .. LOL ..
Actually that is probably the only problem I have is when I read about it or see others smoking.. For the most part in todays society they have certainly made it much easier for me to quit smoking because of how society in general treat smokers as second class citizens..
Oh yeah right.. Forgot what I was suppose to be answering.
Doing great.. I have quit and had nothing since Sept 2006..

You know I never realized how important this question was...until today. I am 35 and have smoked since I was 17. I just found out that I have the beginning stages of copd. I am starting Chantix as soon as I get the prescription on Monday! For God Sake's smokers, this isn't funny. I used to say "yeah, sure I'll quit!" But this time I have to, it's life or death! Good luck and Congrats to everyone here that quit... I hope it goes well for me to.

I gave up having been a heavy smoker many years ago.
The money I have saved since in real terms would have paid off the Mortgage on a modest house.
I also have reason to assume that giving up smoking paid dividends with regard to my health.

Fine thanks! It's my fourth attempt and I'm pretty sure I've cracked it this time. I've managed a four year break this time. Other attempts have been , 3 years, 9 months & 8 months, respectivly. What makes this time differant is the fact that I did it for ME AND ME ALONE!!! Don't ever lose sight of the fact that you'll be a Nicotine addict for the rest of your life and the secret of resisting the urge is a matter of personal CHOICE. My first time, from 1983 to 1986, was because I live with someone who bullied me into stopping ( my partner at the time ) so ultimatley, when we seperated , I started smoking again. My second was after the birth of my first son in 1989. " I didn't wan't to harm the baby" as I remember trying to convince myself. However, 9 months later , the selfish part of the addiction took over and I basicly didn't give a sh*t about the baby , and begun smoking again. In fact the poor guy had to put up with me smoking in the house all day, or in the confined space of the car up until he was nearly 15 years of age, with a breathing space of 8 months in the nineties sometime when my present partner and I made some kind of pact to give up which she failed miserably at and still smokes today(albeit very lightly). This time however, I am genuinely disgusted by the smell of tobacco fumes and very rarely crave a cigarette. When I do feel like a fag ( maybe once or twice a year) I am very quickley put off by the next person who lights up. I belive that I've managed to achive this by firstly recognising that Iam an addict and always will be . I have therefore always been able to feed my addictive nature with a replacement. This replacement must always have the ability to give you some kind of buzz.( you must remember at this point that your addiction to the tobacco was the buzz however slight it eventually became), but CRUCIALLY this has to be something that is either easier to control and/or less harmful. It's not about being a saint it's about DAMAGE LIMITATION. You have an addictive nature like most of the population. You just happend to get addicted to an extreamly addictive and harmful drug. IT HAS TO BE YOUR CHOICE.

Ok, this one is hitting home, because as we speak, my mother is in the ICU unit, unconcious with tubes sticking out of her, not even able to breath on her own, and the prognosis is grim. My mother was a "die hard" smoker for nearly 60 years, between 1 to 2 packs a day. Now, here she is, dying hard, and I'm fluctuating between wanting her to live at any cost, and almost hoping she'll die now because its so doubtful that she'll have any quality of life from here on out, only to have to go thru this again in a few days, weeks or months. Several friends have asked if there's anything they can do... for the ones who smoke, I've just told them to stop. If they cant do it for their own health, then do it for the people they love. No one should have to go through what my mom is going through, and no one should have to be in the position I'm in now. Dont let the addiction be bigger than you or your will to quit. God bless.

After smoking 40 a day Consulate, I packed it in in 1995, and it was the best thing I ever did - ever - in my entire life!
Am now totally intolerant of anybody smoking. Talk about the fervour of the converted!!!!!!! I feel SO well.
For Pete's sale - there is life after cigarettes - pack it in everybody. IT'S WORTH IT a million times over!!!!!!!!!
