all these idiots going on about poluting the air !! make me laught. even your carpet !! as it ages and breakes down throws poisonous chemicals into the air every time you walk on it.....and dont even get me started on cars......but!! i gave up smoking a year and a half ago, and from a 35 year 20 a day habit too. cant say that i feel better for it at all!! i'm very fit. but then i was very fit when i smoked too. load of old rubbish if you ask me. its more likely to be the combustion engine thats causing all the cancers. that!! and the endless chemicals that make up every thing from your carpet to your bed. from your kitchen to the spare room, its all chemicaly produced stuff that is constently breaking down. including most modern foods. the shelf life isnt allways because of natural decay y'know. there are also problems between the chemicals in!! the food, and the chemicals that go to make up the containers.

As a smoker, I can say I don't mind the bans. When I was not a smoker I didn't want to breath in the smoke either.
If they ever ban it in bars here though, I will be quite dissapointed. I would only hope that they would be able to open bars where you could smoke. Thats gonna hurt a lot of bars and clubs if they ban smoking. But I'm quitting for new years anyways.
Oh yea, gotta love Kari's attempt at some psychology there. Its easy to quit when you don't have a choice, its when you don't have a choice and you think "Why does it matter, I'll be dead one day anyways"

on average 25 people die a day from smoking cigs. in Massachusetts. smokers are so rude. were i used to work the smokers used to huddle together near the entrance and when we the nonsmokers had to go by the smokers some of them would purposely blow smoke at us because they knew that we hated the smoke. i really cant stand it when checking out at a store and the cashier just came back from a cigarette break OMG the smell of their breath is atrocious.they smell like walking talking ashtrays!!! GROSS... I am so happy that theses new laws are coming in to effect!! finally!! SECOND HAND SMOKE KILLS....

I'm not fed up at all...I think the ban is great. It was put in place to protect non-smokers (who are over 70% of the population) from the effects of second hand smoke. It is great to go out and not come home stinking of smoke....even my daughter (a smoker) agrees that it is pleasanter in pubs and restaurants now. She would not have the ban overturned even if she could.

Driving is usually a necessity, deliberately fouling the air I breath isn't. There used to be signs saying "saying "spitting is forbidden" ,I suppose you'd object to that ban as well

The smoking ban as done a lot of ppl a lot of good. People have given up cause of it, that never succeeded before.
Why do I have to sit in someone else's smoking. which could be killing me. I have the right to go out. I also have the right to healthy lifestyle and not the prospects of lung disease from 2nd hand smoke.
The government have not banned you from smoking. They just said, these places should be available and healthy to the majority of ppl. You can still smoke.
Also if you are one of these people going to join, the campaign to National Smoking day and you try and smoke in a public place. You will automatically have no public liability insurance covering u. So if go and fall over after and its the fault of the premise they won't be covered. Plus don't think they won't know. pubs and clubs etc have CCTV everywhere these days.

I agree with the ban. Smoke doesn't stay in the smoking section it floats throughout the restaurant. It's also not fair to the employees. It's not realistic for them to get a new job just to avoid smoke and some are highly allergic to smoke or have asthma. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to go to an Applebees to enjoy a meal. Smoke you're nasty cigs in your own home and this is coming from a former smoker!

Personally I am a smoker and I don't mind the smoking ban. There have been so many nights I have been sitting in a bar choking with smoke and stinging eyes. When you go outside to have a smoke you get chatting to people you wouldnt talk to inside the bar, it's not as bad asi thought it would be.

I live in Illinois; beginning January 1, 2008 smoking will be banned in public places.
I am very happy this ordinance will be enacted within the next 48 hours!
I've seen & heard many cases of second-hand smoke which has either killed someone or sickened them.

It has it's pro's and cons. As a non smoker it's nice to have a meal without smoke and it's also nice to be able to beathe in a club/pub. Saying that the (awful) smell of smoke did a pretty good job of covering up the smell of sweat and stale beer.
But all in all if it makes a handful of people so fed up they quit then it's worth all the sweat and stale beer you can throw at me.
And I havn't even mentioned the threat my MY health. It's more of an infringement on me then it is on you smokers. Also take into consideration people unfortunate enough to work in smoky places weather they smoke or not

try visiting a cancer unit one day,my wife recently died of cancer,(not for smoking)but I did see loads of men and women ( ex smokers) fighting for their life, just barely breathing on one lung,so pityful.and their only hope,if any,was chemo therapy, which leaves you feeling sick and tired.

Personally, I think it's great. At my old job, everyone smoked and I breathed in so much secondhand smoke just going on my breaks. It's also great because it gives smokers the opportunity to try to quit.
