What I personally suggest which help you to take care of your boyfriend very well is above of all, take him to the doctor for the detailed physical examination & Labs. Because this type of cough may be prolonged towards the cancer (Lung Cancer specially) and cancer can be cured 100% if diagnosed at the early stage. God Bless All, specially your Boy friend.

God, how irresponsible! For your child's sake, GET HIM OUT OF THERE! What reasonable person smokes around a baby or child even? Move out if you have to. No offense, but why is your mother allowing it?

yeah sounds like your boyfriend shouldn't even get joint custody. he's putting his son at serious risk for asthma, bronchitis, hypersenstivity issues and the obvious-cancer. if your boyfriend is a decent human being and loves his son, he'll give up the smoking around him. to do otherwise proves he's an a$$hole.

In the first place, I think people should be smoking out side, I know its there home but, I would tell them not to smoke around the child if they love this child. The child can't tell them don't smoke its bad for me! Children have rights to.

I know you are concerned, but I would let this up to your boyfriend. You may be treading on thin ice and you need to be keenly aware of this situation that existed long before you came into the picture. He probably has allergies, but it would take cooperation on both sides to address this. And its the child's father and mother are who need to do this. You can then help your boyfriend by supporting the decisions that he and the child's mother agreed on.

Maybe off base here but do you have cats or other animals? He may be allergic to something in your home if he's fine for a while and THEN the cough kicks in.

Sounds to me like early asthma aggravated by smoke. As a smoker with asthma, i have learned use a mint scent candle, bubble bath, air freshener, doesn't matter just have a mint aroma, will help and fresh lemon aide. 1 cup lemon juice 1 cup sugar 2quarts water will help keep lungs clear. lemons do wonders for asthma

this is very nice of you to be so concerned about your boyfriend's son.
firstly as you said he coughs when he come to your house where there is no body smoking around him,
and when he goes to your boyfriend mom he does not cough,
so this cough is not due to this smoke, ie; it is not a bronchitis due to cigarette smoke, other wise he must have this productive cough there.
the second thing is that this son might have other allergies from an unnoticed thing inside your house which makes him coughing after just few days when being with you and relieved when going out side.
you said there are no pet in house but there are many other things can cause allergy like flowers, cloths, soaps, etc...

Look, if you two are worried that you boyfriends ex's boyfriend smokeing is putting your boyfriends son at risk then take him to the doctor get an get an x-ray of his lunges and chest and then go to the courts to get full custody.
it is the responsibilities of the parents to make sure he is safe and healthy if she isnt doing what she told the courts she would do then she shouldnt have the privledge of haveing some one elses life in her hands.

If the child is having a productive cough and it's yellow or green, he has an infection; probably sinus. Bronchitis usually is indicated by a dry, non-productive irritating cough. It might be pollen in your area and post nasal drip. He should be given lots of fluids to Loosen up the mucous and his Dad should take him to the clinic and get the kid on some sort of sinus med. As much as I disapprove of smoking in doors (it's a nasty habit and my hubby smokes but not in the house) I don't think the child is suffering from anything to do with the smoking. Perhaps his Dad and Mom can get together and make an agreement that no one smokes inside when the child is around if you think that would make things better. However, it really sounds to me like he is having an allergic reaction to something, and I'm suspecting it's the outdoor environment, when he changes locations. Let the doctor decide and get the kid a check up. Godloveya'll.

Something in your house is causing an allergic reaction. It could be mold, mildew, or some chemical. Have your carpet and air ducts cleaned. It may help.

When you quit smoking, you start coughing up phlegm within a couple of days. He is getting second hand smoke which has probably addicted and is affecting him. It's not your fault. He's just clearing his lungs at your house. Boyfriend needs to get custody of him. . .sooner the better!

I used to be a smoker and took several attemps before I fully quite. Also, I smoked at work and not at home around my child. On weekends I was miserable because my lungs, like your boyfriends kids would start to try and heal by getting rid of the buildup of tar and Nicotine. Try having your boy friend talk to the boys mother and express his concern about the boy being exposed to second hand smoke. It would not be that hard for mom's boyfriend to step outside to light up.

he shouldn't be exposed to cigarette smoke. get a note from his pediatrician saying so - that ought to solve the problem, your ex will have to deal with it.

sounds like his son has bronchitis or even asthma caused by the mom's smoking. he's gotta be kept away from cigarette smoke. some people r more sensitive than others to it. if he keeps staying around it, he could develope pneumonia as an after effect of the bronchitis or asthma.

Individuals, especially children, around smoke can develop asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and so on. Think about smoke in this manner, its like have a foreign body, or invader in your lungs. Your body reacts to it and therefor causes bronchitis (for example). (Bronchitis is simply an inflammation of the bronchi in the lungs.) I have to admit, I'm not a smoker myself and I personally dont agree with smoking but I think its horrible to do this around children. I think if it were me, knowing what harm it can do to the lungs (long term harm), I would discuss with my boyfriend about him talking to his ex.

Sounds like some sort of allergen exists in your home which is causing his coughing. To test this, give him an over-the-counter antihistamine a day or two before he would normally start coughing... a non-drowsy type of antihistamine, too. If it is an allergy he would less likely have the coughing.
Is he sneezing, too? Sniffles or any other type of mucus-producing reaction is common.
(The way you brought up smoking predisposed everybody to thinking that that was the reason, but in anycase, it would be better not for him to be exposed to smokers.)

As an experienced emergency department RN, I can attest to the fact that smoking around your children increases their chances of contracting multiple breathing problems. Asthma, allergies, bronchitis, and pneumonia to name a few. You might also be surprised to learn that cigarette smoke increases the child's odds of having ear infections. In my professional opinion, smoking in the same room as a child is equivalent to beating or neglecting them: it's child abuse.

if while at his mums house he is living in a smoking enviroment then it is no good for him at all.
while there and breathing in the smoke, he may not cough, but then when he returns to you, and his lungs start to work properly again, this causes him to cough.
many smokers who stop find they get a bad cough, as the body trys to rid itself of mucas while it has chance.
This little boys dad needs to tell his ex that she must stop the smoking from her b/f around thier son for his sake.
I sadly do smoke, but not in my home, no one smokes in my home, and i do not smoke in any other built up area, or where others would suffer, and most def not where my children are living or sat or sleeping.
