Could mold make someone ill?
Unfortunately, I'm that someone. About a two weeks ago, mold started to grow on my room's ceiling, and since then I started to feel ill. Now it got worse. I started to cough, have sore throat, sneeze a lot, have a runny nose, and feel weak. I was just wondering if the mold is causing.

Mold can definitely make you sick!
i suggest you go to the doctor and get the mold issue sorted out. the spores from the mold sit on your lungs when you inhale cause serious damage

I have terrible mold in my room also, but no symptoms to speak of in 4 y.ears, I would be mo.st interested to hear your replies. Most web sites say that it is detrimental to health.

. Environmental health agree that it can cause health pr.oblems, but not to the point of suggesting urgent action.
They advised me to bleach wipe as soon as it appears - to keep the spores down (as I do every winter), and to ask my landlord to check the ventilation is adequate..and if not to fill cavity walls, check loft is insulated.

In my situation, with my landlord - it looks like I will have to continue to bleach wipe and put up wit.h it or leave (which would be too difficult due to location of my work and lack of private rentals being available where I live) grrrrrrrrrrr!

Have you cleaned the mold off yet? Dude, that might be the problem. Put on a surgical mask or at least tie a cloth around your face, then take a bottle of a water, borax and white vinegar solution and scrub that crap off. When

it is possible. sort it out. contact your landlord, keep your windows open and stay out of the room as much as possible

YES MOLD CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS AND CAUSE RESPIRITORY INFECTIONS - CLEAN YOUR ROOM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND REPAINT WITH STUFF THAT PREVENTS MOLD GROWTH. YOU CAN ALSO GET A DEHUMIDIFIER TO REDUCE DAMPNESS SO TO REDUCE MOLD GROWTH

The most common health problems associated with exposure to mould are:

* Eye, nose and throat irritation
* Runny nose, sinus congestion, frequent cold symptoms
* Increased asthma attacks
* Allergic reactions

Anyone experiencing any of these symptoms should consult a physician.

How can I prevent mould from growing in my home?

Control humidity

* Avoid excessively high and prolonged humidity/dampness in the home.
* Limit the use of humidifiers. When using a humidifier, follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.
* Limit the number of fish tanks and indoor plants as these can raise the humidity level in your home.

Proper ventilation

* Turn on exhaust fans, particularly when bathing, showering, cooking and doing laundry.
* Open windows when weather permits.

Control moisture

* Repair all leaks and plumbing problems.
* Thoroughly clean and dry water-damaged carpets and building materials. Discard material that cannot be cleaned and properly dried.

What should I do if I have mould?

Small areas

Small areas of mould can be cleaned using a household cleaner. A small area is fewer than three patches, with each patch less than three feet by three feet in size.

* Scrub the area with detergent (preferably an unscented detergent).
* Sponge with a clean, wet rag and dry quickly and thoroughly.

Always wear personal protective equipment, including a disposable dust mask (3M 8210 or equivalent) and household rubber gloves, when using any cleaner or chemical.

Larger areas

Areas of mould larger than three patches (each patch more than 3 feet by 3 feet in size) should be cleaned by professionals. Professional help can be found under Environmental Services in the Yellow Pages.

In all cases, the underlying cause of water accumulation or prolonged high humidity must be corrected or mould will continue to grow or reoccur. Regularly inspect your home for signs of moisture problems or water damage (musty odours, condensation, and discoloration).
