The severed head is aware for about 2 minutes. It can still hear and see. If you want to know the answer, then behead yourself and get someone to ask you in those precious 2 mins.

There are several different opinions on this subject circulating on the web. The most common being that the brain remains concious up to 30 seconds after the head is severed from the body. The best site I have found on the subject is at:

actually the guillotine was invented to behead people painlessly...because if done with an ax you can miss and take a couple of chops to get the job done,...and that does hurt. but a quick beheading that goes right should not hurt much

NO it does not hurt , the brain cannot comprehend what is happening .
The brain alerts you to minor injury but shut's down your ability to feel pain when injury is severe ,
In the case of a beheading minor , severe and fatal injuries would take place before the brain and therefore you could understand what was happening .

It all depends on the method. If the head is removed in one quick motion then I would doubt that the beheadee feels anything. The brain would most likely not have time to feel pain before it lost conscientiousness. Having said that. The people that have been beheading "infidels" in Iraq have been doing it by slowly slicing through the neck and then the spinal column. This leaves plenty of time and nerves intact to feel the pain and even more... the terror.

When a person is beheaded the human is dead , because the brain is no longer has the veins connected to the heart. The brain signals that the head is no longer connected to the body. That is why people used the guollitine long ago because it was a quick but unharmful death as far as pain. The person will not feel it but the body still has shut down which last no longer than 10 seconds.

I think the quick cut is probably painful for about a second, I believe the brain goes into shock instantly and is aware of nothing.
