What happened to me?
last night, i was lying in bed relaxing and all of the sudden my arms started to go numb, followed by my legs and then the rest of my body. While i was lying there it felt like my brain was there but my body wasn't, it was a scary feeling. I then stood up and noticed i had bad trouble breathing and my chest started to hurt. I almost called 911, i have never in my life felt this way before and i am only 21 years old, anyone have any idea what might of happened to me or what could of caused it?
Additional Details
all i could think of was paranoid thoughts of dying which made it that much more horrible

Don't know, but I would suggest saying a prayer or two everyday for angels to watch over you and keep you in good health and company for as long as you are here.

Not sure what you believe in, but just think of it this way... it could only help...

Much luck and light in your situation!!! Be well...

It sounds like an anxiety attack. My wife has them. Have you been stressed lately?

The best solution (if that is the problem) is Therapy.

Dude, go see your doctor. Have them perform an EKG and a stress test. If you're taking any medicines (prescribed or not) tell your doctor.

it sounds like sleep paralysis. This can happen just before falling asleep or just before waking up. It is very scary but harmless. The trouble breathing may have been panic from not being able to move. If this keeps happening I would see a doctor just to be sure nothing is wrong.

Panic attack, for sure...they usually cause you to feel like you are having a heart attack. If you felt better within an hour or so and you are generally in good health, I wouldn't worry about this particular incident, but if you start getting them frequently , see your doctor. they can give you meds to help, and trust me, it's much easier to take a pill every day than to have to feel frequently like you're dying.

Ps. by the look of your user name, i've heard that if you smoke pot it tends to bring on panic attacks.

What you describe could be anything from an episode of sleep paralysis followed by the fear that can be caused by this type of sudden nightmare type event to a major neurological problem. I would see an MD as soon as you can. If money is a problem use a free clinic or teaching hospital ER. But see someone. It may be nothing or it could be serious. It will take a good history and exam and possibly some tests (I would think an EKG would be a good idea for one) to be sure that you are safe. Do not let this go.

Oh my gosh. that is sooo weird you said that because sometimes when I go to bed, like i get really weird numbness in my arms (theyre not asleep) and like i will have shooting pains in my sides. I would stand up and felt like i was hyper-venalating or something. I went and told my mom and she said that it was all in my mind (she is a nurse) and I was like ... umm i dont think so... I felt like I was dying. She said it was all physco-sematic. I still dont believe her, but sometimes when I am falling asleep that happens to me, and I really dont know what it is either. I am healthy so I know it wasnt anything health related. Anyways, Sorry I couldnt help ALL that much. I was just relieved to know that I am not the only one who has these weird - i dont even know what to call them! lol.

Dont worry I had that happen to me when I was 15. I was just lying there and my whole body started going numb cilimbing up on one side then working its way to the other. You got your self even more scard by getting your self worked up. You simply had a pinched nerve. Think where it started in your body if it happens again keep yourself calm. And you move your body around to get the pinched nerve out. I lost my speech, my way to walk cause I scared my self. Its your nervous system working with the nerves. Keep yourself calm and agian just work out the kink of the nerve if it happens again. By the way it happend to me about 4 more times. Doc said it herself it was a pinched nerve.

You may have been laying in a way that you wer getting poor circualation, causing you to feel that your extremities wer going numb, thus causing you to feel panicky, or maybee having whats called an anxiety attack, As for what caused the numbness I am not sure but the rest sounds like an anxiety attack.

That may help narrow down some things.

Oh, yeah, this happens to me all of the time. I love when I go numb. Next time you go numb like this, do what I do and hurry over to 7-11 for a slurpee and drink it as fast as you can. The brain freeze along with being numb is out of this world awesome.

it could be a panic/anxiety attack. if you've a lot of stress in your life then this could occur due to that. however, having said that, it's always best to get checked out. go to your doctor just to put your mind at rest. good luck

It sound slike you might have had a panic attack. Has anything stressful happened in your life recently (remember that good events can cause stress too)? Has this happened before? If so, this might be something you want to discuss with your doctor, as you might have an anxiety disorder. If this is a first time shot, it might have just been a one time deal ... most people have a panic attack at least once in their life and never have those symptoms again.

It could be low blood pressure, which could be caused by a lack of iron in your diet. It also could be caused by fatigue, or you could be coming down with a virus of some kind. Sharp chest pains and pain when you inhale might be pleurisy.

You know it could be any number of things. Do you have a lot going on in your life right now? It could be your body reacting to it or a panic attack or a nerve pinched when you laid down. If it really concerns you, you should go to yuor dr and get it checked and be sure to tell him all the symptoms, They might want to run some test to make sure its nothing more serious. When i was pregnant my whole left side right side would go numb every day cause the baby was lying on a nerve it freaked me out and I went to the dr just make sure it was normal. Going in can never hurt it could be nothing ir something you really need to be seen for it is your decision but if it happens again I would definately go in for it. Once might can be shaken off but twice could mean something more. Good luck like to know what it is.

When you are sleeping, something called "Sleep Paralysis" occurs - i.e. your body becomes paralyzed. This prevents you from sleepwalking, thrashing all over, acting out your dreams, etc.

When meditating or relaxing, it's possible for this sleep paralysis to occur while your mind is still awake, and if you're not prepared for it, it can freak you out - causing panic, headache, paranoia. It also can result in "Night Terrors" (waking nightmares in which one perceives there are evil beings in their room, or hovering over them). I've sometimes heard this referred to as "Awareness of Sleep Paralysis" or asp. It's also common, in this "mind-awake, body asleep" mode to feel vibrations or shaking throughout your body, or to hear voices or sounds, etc. I personally believe the negative experiences that result from this are because the person is not expecting it and therefore is gripped by fear, causing his/her brain to generate negative emotions and images.

Many people do various types of exercises on purpose, while falling asleep to induce this "mind-awake, body-asleep" state, for the purpose of inducing "out-of-body" experiences and/or "Astral Projection". To read more about it, look for a book on "Out-of-body Experiences" or "Astral Projection".

You didn't mention your age, so I don't mean to rule out a medical condition, - just suggesting an alternate possibility.

This could be nothing. On the other hand, you could have had a cardiac incident. Heart attacks are not just for the old. It would probably be wise to see a doctor and get yourself checked out.

It might be slightly embarrassing if it turns out to be nothing. But, nobody ever died of embarrassment.

Get yourself checked out and get a full physical-- You re too young to be getting those type of symptoms... regardless of what type of answers u get here, regardless of the stress or any drugs u may be taking u should still go to your doctor and advise him of what happened! Last thing u want is find out too late that u had a serious condition that became aggravated for not getting proper treatment.
