Walking barefoot at home..?
|
I walk barefoot at home because I just like to. I don't like wearing socks, slippers, flip-flops, or anything else. Usually when my mom's friend comes over, she starts telling me not to walk around with barefeet because its "too cold". Today, my mom told me that since we have real marble at our house, that it's too cold to walk barefoot. I told her that I think it's warm and I don't feel any coldness. My mom then tells me you can get sick (not from dirt) from the cold, and it can travel up in your body and harm other places in your body (mostly where above the women's area..where you get cramps). Is this true..or does she not really realize that, that can't happen? Can any other diseases harm you other than bacteria, dirt, etc. getting on your feet?
THANKSS!! <3333

Yes your mom is completely right. I walk barefoot on my hardwood flooring all the time and overtime I've experienced so much pain in difference areas that I actually think there's something wrong in a certain part of my body but it's just overall sickness that your organs get from your feet being too cold. Like you are more likely to get back pinching pain, ovarian cysts on women etc...
I suggest you start wearing at least those fluffy socks that are extremely comfy, they don't bother me at all and I've found that it helps with my "painful" problems!
Goodluck ;)

Take my advice: don't go barefoot. I don't think the cold thing is true, but it's the dirt issue you should worry about. When you walk barefoot, you are actually embedding dirt into your feet, so much so that it becomes impossible to wash all of it out. Look at any person's bare feet after years of going barefoot and believe me you'd be running for your flip-flops!
Now, having said that, I suppose it all depends on how clean your floor is. Do people walk in the house in the shoes they wear in public/outside? Do you have pets? If yes, then I'd wear filp-flops or some other kind of lightweight protection.

My parents tell me that all the time. Like, when you first wake up in the morning, and step foot onto cold floor, like the bathroom... and do this often, when you get older your veins will be huge or something. iDK. It could all just be superstition... but I try wearing slippers around the house. Also because I don't like my feet getting dirty and going on my bed with dirty feet. Yes, even though your house is clean, your feet can still get dirty.

I THINK MAMA IS RIGHT, AND ALSO YOU NEED SOME PROTECTION FOR YOUR FEET TOO, TO SOME DEGREE.THE BODY IS 98.6 DEGREES FOR A LIFE SUSTAINING REASON AND FOR US TO SUBJECT IT TO ANYTHING DIFFERENT FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT HEALTH, WHICH INCLUDES PARALYSIS, ARTHRITIS, INFECTION, AND KIDNEY PROBLEMS AND GOOSE BUMPS. the most common long term problem would possibly be arthritis. the cold on the floor doesn't really do that much harm - think of cavemen. the biggest, most common problem people have that walk around barefoot is foot injuries - including broken toes from either stubbing them or something falling on them.

I'm an Asian...I always walk barefoot at home...everybody does and they seem perfectly fine to me. But then it's very warm here so wearing sock at home is not practical. if you don't feel cold, I don't see why you should wear it...

Feel your feet with your hands and if they don't feel cold to the touch, they are warm enough. I think that your mom just does not like seeing you walk around barefoot for some reason. The thing about the cold moving up is just an old wives tale.

I know what you mean! Parents want to control you and tell you old wives tales! Younger people are naturally warmer, and walking barefoot is almost an instinct! Shoes can hurt and anything that closes up around your feet too much can cause stinky feet! (The germs love the warm, sweaty environment!) I do not know of anyway to convince the older folk that we are not going to get sick from walking barefoot, the worst thing is if your feet get hurt! (Stepping on something.) I compromised by wearing slippers when my mom was home.

I had an ant come from isreal and she kept telling me to put on some slippers. It's fine unless your floors are like realy realy dirty or something. I walk barefoot like everyday for 15 years and nothings wrong with me...

Well obviously they're wrong if you're fine, right? In the warmer seasons I'm barefoot around my house as well. Once it gets colder I'll slip on slipper socks. Yes - having your feet too cold for too long could give you frostbite but I highly doubt your house ever gets that cold. Plus unless you have no feeling in your feet I'm sure you'll be putting socks on once it gets colder!
PS: give her the argument that wearing socks on a marble floor makes it easy to slip and fall - bare feet have MUCH better traction ;)

No it is just a myth. Think about this, your hands are bare and you don't get sick from that. It is the same with feet.
It is very healthy and good for you to go barefoot. I go barefoot at home because I just like to as well.
I also walk around in bare feet outside a bit and my doctor tells me I have very healthy feet.
So do not worry about comments other people make, it is important that you feel comfortable and not sacrifice that just because your mother says it is bad for you. You will find a lot more evidence supporting going barefoot is healthy than against it.
Hope that helps.

I'm for walking around barefoot at home. If your feet aren't cold, I think you're alright. And no, I don't think you can get sick from walking on a cold tiled floor.

The only thing about wearing slippers is that you have to visit the pedi ppl less often. 8) Other than that, yep I'm a barefoot girl too and have yet to contract some deadly disease...

No, you won't get sick from having cold feet. Otherwise, all my dates would have Ebola or something.
But yeah, you won't get sick. Cold was commonly thought of as a cause of illness back in the olden days, but then again, so was frequent bathing.
Now, if your floor is ice or something, you might get frostbite, but marble isn't going to do anything. I walk around barefoot, too, and I'm healthy as an ox. Well, a skinny, nerdy ox.

♫How does she know?♫

no. i just think she doesn't want you barefoot when you have company over. i walk barefoot ALL THE TIME, i swear (lol), and i don't have any diseases. i think she's just trying to play you so you won't idk, embarrass her, or something. but now, you can't get a disease form cold feet.
however, if you're walking IN dirt, then probably, you could get something, but if you're at home, no. (unless, of course, your house is filled with dirt)

Sounds like your mom is from the old school, where walking around your house barefoot in the wintertime was not considered to be dignified. So, she uses the indirect reason, because if she told you the truth, she knows how you would react. My wife goes barefoot in the house all during the winter, and she doesn't get any more sick than the average person who wears shoes, slippers, or socks does.

having a lower body temp causes your body to use resources keeping you regulated. These resources could be used to kepp you well, but that is a very minor concern. I wouldn't let it keep you form rockin your socks off

Absolutely not true. I've been barefoot everywhere, summer and winter, indoors and outdoors, including in snow for almost eleven years, and I am rarely sick. In fact I used to be sick all the time when I still wore shoes, coughing and sneezing from early fall until late spring no matter what I tried, but in all those years of going barefoot I have called in sick once (for two days, and not even in winter). Even having a minor cough is rare, now.
Your *core* temperature does have a little influence on whether or not you'll catch a cold, but being barefoot if you're dressed warmly enough on upper body & head is no problem. Oh, and not for cramps either; I have had bad cramps at some time in my life, bad enough I've tried a lot like keeping track of what I wore, how warm it was etc.. no relation between when I still wore footwear or when I stopped, or summer vs. winter. No trace of cramps last week when I had it (*very* rare for me), and I walked around barefoot outdoors for some time every day, at temps at or below freezing.
Also you will not catch a disease from germs on your feet. Our skin is made to keep pathogens out and it's very rare for anything to be able to enter our body that way. Unless you lick your toes or put your feet up on the dinner table, we're at far greater risk of picking something up through our hands; with our hands we touch our face and food, so the risk of any germs entering our body is much greater. A lot of things we touch every day are full of germs; think door knobs, railings, shopping carts... the dirt on those kind of objects is less visible than the dirt of the street but no less (likely far more) germy.
