Try cough drops, steam from a shower (or boil a pot of water and breathe in the steam), cough syrups, lemon/honey water, things like that. Or, where you say that there IS mucus in there, perhaps try a medication called an expectorant -- it will not stop you from coughing immediately, but it'll help Loosen the phlegm (mucus) in your lungs, so that after you expel it by coughing it up, you'll stop coughing. Good luck and feel better!

Treatment of a cough generally involves addressing the condition causing it. An acute infection such as pneumonia may require antibiotics, an asthma-induced cough may be treated with the use of bronchodialators, or an antihistamine may be administered in the case of an allergy. Physicians prefer not to suppress a productive cough, since it aids the body in clearing respiratory system of infective agents and irritants. However, cough medicines may be given if the patient cannot rest because of the cough or if the cough is not productive, as is the case with most coughs associated with colds or flu. The two types of drugs used to treat coughs are Antitussives and expectorants.
Many health practitioners advise increasing fluids and breathing in warm, humidified air as ways of loosening chest congestion. Others recommend hot tea flavored with honey as a temporary home remedy for coughs caused by colds or flu. Various vitamins, such as vitamin C, may be helpful in preventing or treating conditions (including colds and flu) that lead to coughs. Avoiding of mucous-producing foods can be effective in healing a cough condition. These mucous-producing foods can vary, based on individual intolerance, but dairy products are a major mucous-producing food for most people.

There is a product by Zicam (its a Spray) that works wonders, it won't interact with any drugs that I'm aware of, however check with your doctor first.

Psuedo-Ephedrine based cold medicines work nicely to relief that crappy tight lunged feeling.
Chamomile tea helps soften the throat and take away the itch to cough.
Also, excercising can help you get healthier faster.

Lean forward when you cough puts pressure on your lungs to expell the contents. This takes the pressure off of your back so it will not hurt.
Breath with you lips pursed when sitting and this helps alleviate pressure.
Have someone gently beat on your back with thier palms so it breaks up the junk in your lungs and chest.
Honey lemon and warm tea for the calmin affects.
Deep breaths every two hours.
Increase your fluids.
I am a nurse hope this helps a little.

Well, some main ideas for you.
1) Take a cough Suppressant or related medication. (You probably already knew this one.)
2) Make sure you are not dehydrated. Up your fluid intake.
3) For a single cough, like when you are singing or giving a presentation, press the end of your tongue against the roof of your mouth and move it back and forth, back to front. This can suppress the momentary cough urge. I think it also helps distract you away from the urge to cough for a bit.
I learned this second one from several voice teachers and musical theater/opera performers.
Good luck!

first of all, know what causes the coughing in the first place....for me, one of the main thing that causes coughin is orange juice...then DO NOT USE soft drinks to calm our coughing....take some medicene....prospan or amedramine is what i use
then, drink lots of lukewarm to hot water it calm your throte muscles down...
and lastly get some rest....
( Ginger tea work for some people kind of aggrvates the cough in others, so its up to u)
drinking hot fluids generaly does the trick....err...if you can try not to think about your coughin that works too :P

Drink lots of water, and make you you drink at least 2 - cups of hot tea with Honey. Coughing starts because a part of the throat is dry or irritated. The water keeps in moist and the Honey in the tea coats the throat for temporary relief
Hope this helps

chocolate stops coughing - honestly it does - stange but true!
I'd spend the evening nibbling a bar of dairy milk.
Alternatively, buy a pack of cattargh pastilles, they're strong and revolting but do help you to stop coughing.
To soothe your sore throat, chew on some fresh Ginger.
