yes, but not because of quiting smoking.Only because you must replace this bad habit with one other.the times you need to smoke , you eat because you need to do something else, from nervousness,by habit etc

yes in respect to the fact that smoking is an appetite suppressant and if you are not smoking your hands are free and you will find yourself picking at food to do something with them
no if you are aware what you are doing and watch what you eat. i gave up in march 1999 and still weigh the same

Quitting smoking and gaining weight are widely expected to go hand in hand and they surely did in my personal experience.
The reason seems to be, that instead of smoking you will look for another kind of distraction - which very often will be eating, especially sweets.
I tried to identify this kind of "substitute eating" and drink a glass of mineral water instead. But still I eat more now that I quit smoking.
Still, from a health perspective quitting smoking will be worth the effort.

well, i heard about a 30 year old man who recently gave up smoking. He was 74kg at that time. But after that, his weight ballooned up to over 85kg.
most pople belive that smoking can help you stop feeling hungry. Everyone knows that smoking is bad for your health, but it is a legal drug.

In some studies yes. As people who smoke the act of smoking help there metabolism and hunger. When a smoker is done eating and has their cig their hunger will stop and they will not eat anymore. People who don't smoke don't get that hunger controll.

if you gonna quit smoking you try to make use of some druds or tablets stuck to your body this feed you by nikotin that your body miss because of quiting smoking suddenly and will help you not to feel you want to smoke
and yet will make same effect as same as if you got your ciggeret
you make it gradually until you totally get off smoking

My dad lost 25 lbs before he quit smoking just in case he gained weight! He did gain 40 lbs but ate junk food constantly. Once he was over the cravings and the physical habit of smoking, he only had to lose 15lbs to get back to normal. And he started eating healthier and kept it off.
I am still too chicken to try-- best of luck to you!

NO, overeating causes weight increase.
Many ex-smokers crave a replacement for their habit, they simply resort to sweets and chocolate, more alcohol, simply eating more.
So it is simply the lack of willpower to find a balance in life without smoking that means they eat more than they did = they put weight on.
Smokers are drug addicts and withdrawal impacts people in different ways - not everyone turns to food as a comfort.

it does not cause it directly, what happens is that sometimes poeople stop smoking and then instead of smoking start eating lots, compensating for their loss of cigarrettes.

Most people when quitting smoking will replace the habit with snacking. This causes the weight gain. It is healthier to gain a few punds than it is to quit smiking, so don't let that get in the way of your decision.
PS. I need to quit also.

Yes. Sadly it's true. The average weight gain is around 25 pounds. After a few months of being smoke free, it gets a little easier to lose the weight.

yep! when you stop smoking... your "sense of smell" and "sense of taste" returns... so, since your "appetite" is "stimulated" by the smell of food... and, you are "once more" enjoying "how good food can taste"... you tend to eat more of it for a while... (non-smokers/former smokers can gain up to 35 lbs the first month that they stop smoking)...
to counter that, be more active... walk more... join a gym... eat more "bulk foods"... like salads, carrot stick, etc, etc...
and, eventually you'll "normal" out!!!

it is very true, I tried and believe me I gained 20 lbs, All I wanted to do was eat and eat, it was crazy, so yes, I did start back and now I can see where I am losing the weight that I had gained, If you can have control over the not eating while you are trying to stop then you shouldn't gain any weight, but I had to have something in my mouth because I had smoked for so long and it was terrible not to be able to put a cigarette
in my mouth, so I ate and I ate.If you stop smoking just be strong don't be a wimp like me, you will make it.

well it can cause weight gain because of the simple fact that you eat more because you are use to having something in your mouth so you go to food because you no longer smoke.

Only if you start a eatting habit in place of your smoking, many people use smoking as a stress releaver which is stupid, but others use food as one which is also stupid, so work it from there. Invest in a punching bag or if your a boss fire some people haha

The reason people gain weight when they quit smoking is because they are trying to break a habit where they are putting something in their mouth , like a baby with a pacifier.
That's why they say chew gum or suck on a sucker if you feel the urge. I quit smoking 6 years ago and didn't gain any weight but it was't easy because I did it cold turkey. Keep busy and your mind on everything but cigs and food, you can do it.

quitting smoking in itself doesn't cause a weight gain.
most people gain weight after quitting smoking because they have to do something with their hands to satisfy their nervous energy.
that is generally eating and that's what causes the weight gain.

smoking decreases the appatite. its how some unhealthy models loose weight or keep it off instead of excersize, so if u get off the cigarette's, the appatite returns to normal, basically ur a bit hungrier than usual. so unless u watch what you eat, and maybe start doing a bit of excersize, u might put up a bit of weight.

Yes, I can't believe all these answers that say you eat more or you have oral fixation. They don't know what they are talking about. Even if you eat the same you will gain.
The TRUTH is that you gain weight because your metabolism slows down.
Your system doesn't have to work as hard to get oxygen into the blood stream. The oxygen level returns to normal within 24 hrs of quiting.
If you don't want to gain weight you will have to be more active assuming you are eating the same.
