eat a lot of carbs or sugar before you go to bed.
The brain will go into very active REM sleep to try to burn off all the excess glycogen in your blood stream.
this isn't very healthy to do btw.

Sure fire way to get nightmares:
-watch a scary movie while eating pizza. Go directly to bed. Leave the lights off and pre arrange a friend to call you at 3 AM. If you pick up, they should just hang up. It may not scare you, but it may disterb your sleep pattern enough to do it.

You WANT nightmares?
You could try watching scary movies, bloody war movies, cheat on taxes, visit a war zone, go to a mexican jail, eat food that will give you a stomach ache. stay up for several days and only let yourself sleep 10 minutes at a time. do something bad to someone else.

I watch something scary on TV, turn out the lights, and listen for weird sounds. Then, when I get freaked out, I turn on the lights and go to bed.

Yeah...eating food (I've heard spicy / acidic foods help) might work because as you sleep, the stomach deprives the brain of energy if there is food present for digestion.
