The most common answer you will get is that it is a spontaneous nervous reaction. Now, I have proved, as have others, that you can sneeze with your eyes open. If you are having an episode where you are repeatedly sneezing, you can prepare and force yourself to keep your eyes open. It is hard to do, but not impossible.

The old wifes tale, says you cant sneeze with your eyes open as if you did yours eyes would shoot out from your eye socket. but the real reason is that it is a natural reflex to close your eyes when you sneeze

The power behind the sneezing action is so strong that it would result in your eyes popping out if the lids were open.

It's almost impossible to sneeze with your eyes open but some people can do it. Sneezing with your eyes shut is a reflex only.

Because you sneeze at 40 miles an hour (or possibly 20...) and the pressure from that would force your eyes from your head.

I'm defo no scientist but I do know that every time you sneeze you have a 1/16 of an orgasm (totally useless info there) and a sneeze can travel 60 mph so I guess its prob cos your eyes might pop out with the force so thats why we close them

I always want to sneeze as soon as I am putting mascara on! It is possible with practice to keep your eyes open. Just imagine you have wet mascara on and force your eyes open. It makes a horrible sound , but it can be done!! lol

Because it's a reflex thing. I mean you sneeze and you blink too. But if your driving you better keep at least one eye open.

Because the order to the eye to react to the sneeze from the brain delays in communicating with the eyes.Sneeze is in more speeder than the brain to eye communication. But it is possible if you practise it whenever you feel to sneeze not to close the eyes
