Because they are addicted to cigarettes. When you are addicted you have no control over it. Also there's a thing about it wont happen to me...My husband died of lu ng cancer, they removed the entire left lung. It was stage 4 when they diagnosed him. He made it 10 months. Its hard to see a person die like that.

genetically modified Nicotine.
Nicotine is harder 2 give up than heroin.
ask a doc and they'll tell u.
the tobacco companies found 2 many people easily gave smoking in the 70s/80s, that they now use a modified tobacco that's harder 2 kick the habit, once ur hooked.

I know that there are a lot of mixed "facts" and real life happenings out there that can confuse people.
My father quit smoking as soon as they said it was bad for him and died 40 years later (69 yo) of lung cancer, probably from breathing all of our car vapors, hair spray, cleaning products etc...
My mother is approaching 80 and was never able to kick the habit and is very healthy!
Go figure! I guess when your numbers up it's up!

like any other addiction it medicates what is msssing or hurting in your life. So as long as that void is there it is impossible to convince someone otherwise

Because it gets you high! GameGiver here with his smoke breath! Listen, and listen good, because this is real talk; as long as a drug exists, and I mean any drug, it will be used by some and abused by most. Everyone knows what crack will do to you but people still smoke it. The same way you have people that chain-smoke there's probably more people that have to constantly drink coffee for the caffeine. What makes one addiction better than the other? Most people want to enjoy the now and worry about the consequences later. To each their own, I say. If you want to smoke crystal meth and you know what it's going to do, knock yourself out. Just don't steal my tv.

The truth is... ppl are predisposed to smoking cigs. It's in our scientifically generated controlled genes and there's nothing anybody can do to stop it. Some are lucky and some are royally *-u-c-k-e-d. If you parlay in drugs your only alternative when trying to stop is cigs, good luck!!
By the way, street drugs and cigs consist of the same kitchen components. One comes in paper the other loose synthetics :{

Cigarettes contain addititives which are addicting. People know the truth about smoking and the detramental affects it can have on your health, however with the chemicals that are addicting the body says feed me more, while the mind says you should stop. It is a game of tug-a-war. The stronger the mind is the more it can curb the nasty deadly habbit.

Well, I used to smoke. When I smoked, I told myself that nothing would happen to me. After all my dad smoked every day since he was 12 years old. His sister smoked her entire adult life. My in -laws smoked all of their adult life and nothing happened to them. Then my aunt got lung cancer in one lung. The doctors took out that lung. But, she couldn't quit.....she continued to smoke and finally died when she got cancer in the other lung. My mother in- law developed emphazema and had difficulty breathing. She had quit smoking though, years before these symptoms. She eventually got lung cancer nearly 20 years after quitting. She didn't make it through the chemo. My dad had all kinds of problems directly stemming from smoking. His veins closed up in his legs and he had to have surgery to replace major veins. He had stroke after stroke (one that left him blind for a couple of days). His wife quit buying him cigarettes, but she still smoked. Dad could hardly walk, but he would get up and walk across the room to get a cigarette from his wife. He finally died of lung cancer too. So it is the addictive nature of the cigarette that keeps people telling themselves that "it won't happen to me". The best thing to do is to keep people from ever starting.
