I donated blood for the first time yesterday - and according to the nurses my donation will be divided and given to three different people. It wasn't that bad really. Does anyone else donate, and why do you do it (or, why don't you?).
Additional Details
how embarassing - I meant to write "donor"

HELL YES! It is the responsibility of every healthy adult to donate blood. If you have type O blood and do not donate then you are a social criminal.

I had almost reached my 2nd gallon of donated blood, when I had to stop about 15 years ago. I had a positive Hep C in the screening process. It was likely a false positive, but they won't take you after that. I truly looked forward to donating blood. It's such a simple thing to do, but could save someone's life. How many other things can you do that have that result?

Yes, I received a certificate for a gallon's worth of donated blood from the Red Cross. It was sort of neat. If we're able to do so, we ought to all be regular donors...so many people need blood.

Yes, I do whenever we have a blood drive at work.
It is about the only thing I can afford to donate.

I use to do it regularly. But as I get older, my veins are getting harder to find...they have to poke me too many times...ouch. I end up looking like swiss cheese when I leave...really bruised swiss cheese. I got up to more than a gallon before I tapered off though. Kudos to you for donating. That's awesome! Keep up the good work. :)

I think it is great that you donated for the first time, I have taken peoples blood for 16 years and find my job very rewarding. My sister needed blood yesterday and because of people like you and myself she was able to get it,and is doing great.where did you donate? Next time inquire about donating platelets they are harder to collect because it takes more time. Keep up the good work and encourage others to do the same. How old are you, and how did you like those questions?

Yes, I am. I would hate to find out that some one died because of a lack of blood. There is really very little pain and NO risk of getting aids (or any thing else for that matter) from donating blood.

candiecorn
I wish I could donate blood but I'm only 106 pounds and they wouldn't let me.

shania
I used to, I also used to work for the Red Cross.
Until i found out that they knew about aids and didn't do anything to stop it.
Sinse then.. NO WAY.

blood donation can be quite a racket, your blood bank does give the blood to anyone, they sell it, to hospitals for surgury of course, but also to universities for study, to the military, to the government. If you really want to insure the blood goes where you want it to donate at the place you want it to go.

I can not donate blood because i have very low blood pressure, I've also had cancer so i think that also prevents me from donating

Personal preference not to...where does the blood go? I figure that if I ever need some, I'll get some from hubby or friends. I serve humanity in other ways.

For my life between 19 and 35, I donated at my various work places for a total of 46 times.

Back in the mid 80's, folks started to hear that AIDS was contracted by "donated blood". It was kind of stupid and funny that less people volunteered their blood because the 'risk' of AIDS.

Of course they have a ton of questions to try and weed out the donors that are 'practicing' homo-sexuals, going back 25 years. Even then they expect some to donate blood, - just to have their blood tested for AIDS. They give those deviants one last chance to use a bar code sticker that says "don't use my BLOOD".

Oh, btw, I met my wife while we were giving blood.
