I bet even the word 'tip' makes you think of a stinky cancer causing stick. If you want to give up enough then you will it's wheelpower and you are behind the wheel. YOU CAN DO IT!. Smokers who can't quit try to get other people to smoke because they feel bad about themselves and want to bring other people down with them. Do it not just for yourself but for the person you may sit next to on the bus, the people sitting behind you at a restaurant and to set an example to every kid that may look at you holding it. Smoking is discusting you don't want it so don't do it. It will be hard, you will cough up black; but you will have succeeded in yourself.. And welcome to saving money. Sorry there is no tip, but motivation is the key. You do the rest

Most smoking people just don't realize they're killing themselves. At least try smoking with a full understanding of what you're doing and try to take pleasure from holding a cigarette, lighting it and feel the smoke going into your lungs and body with every second. And smoke the whole cigarette thinking this way. Is it really pleasurable?

I gave up about 8 months ago and haven't had one since. However, like you, I had tried so many times before and failed at the first hurdle - an argument with the man, a bad day at work - I used to always want a ciggie when I was excited too!. At the end of the day it's pure willpower - I became addicted to YA!! but it worked. Everytime I wanted a ciggie I answered some questions. The thing you have to understand is that there will always be pressures in life so, unless you learn to get through them without a ciggie, you will never break the cycle of giving up and then giving in at the first sign of trouble. Just put it down to experience and try again until you actually stop for good. Believe me, I cannot stand the smell of ciggies now and think I would probably be sick if I had one.

Hi Yum Mum

I had tried all sorts over the years - Hypnosis, NRT etc & failed.

I read Allen Carr's Easy way to stop smoking book with an open mind, thought about what it said, re-read some chapters & that was it.

Five years now - no cravings, no withdrawl symptoms. I am very happy to have stopped. My life & health have improved dramatically.

I recommend it to everyone.

Please read it.

(No, I am not on commission :-)

Not me. I know it's not that easy. I quit once for a couple of months. I quit my job and got hypnotized and that worked until I went back to the same job and started smoking again. But maybe it would keep working for you. I was amazed it worked as long as it did.

Hi, i have been a smoking since i was 13, i'm now 34. i have given up when i was pregnant and gone back straight after birth, i have given up for 2 weeks here and there and gone back cause my 3 kids have driven me nuts or my family or my health.
I always had an excuse to go back, but then in october of last year i had a ciggie and i sat there and looked at it and thought why the hell am i putting this in my mouth? i hate the taste, i hate how i smell and feel and more importantly i cant get up and down stairs without getting so badly out of breathe i couldn't move
i decided that my life wasn't worth giving up over something i hated so i stopped, no help, no patches, i bought lollies, and everytime i got stressed i told myself i would be better as a b***h for a day than dead for ever!

Do it for someone you love. My uncle quit for his kids, whom he was killing indirectly because of that and my dad quit because my brother and I refused to hug him because he smelled like cigars!

It's easier to do it when you do it for somebody you love.

I also heard about someone who quit because they raised the price, haha.

Find something else to replace the addiction with, but not eating!! I haven't seen my dad in a couple of years but he told me when he quit he gained a lot of weight. My uncle on the other hand just started hanging out with friends more and went fishing often, kept himself busy, etc.

Just try keeping your mind off smoking.

Wish you the best of luck! You're doing a great thing.

Well, logically speaking, when you want to get out of bed for instance, you usually just get out of bed instead of lying there for weeks wishing you had the strength and will power.

But I know, addictions are nasty things.

You can try a new FDA approved medication called Chantix. This is an oral pill used for smoking cessation. Improved success if used along w/ support groups. Before this, try Bupropion --another prescription medication. Helps to also lose weight but don't expect major weight loss. Best thing is that you're on your way to quitting.

I stopped 5 months ago and was surprised how easy i found it, but i did change my whole way of thinking about smoking which did help, your lungs were not meant to inhale smoke and if someone put you in a room with all the poisons that in ciggiess would you go and sit in it for at least an hour? and what is the worse thing that could possibly happen to you if you didn't have a ciggie, as there is just nothing at all!!! and think cash not ash i took out a bank loan and updated my car got a new computer and a new Mobile phone, as an incentive to keep me going, as that money would only have gone up in smoke, i am now kicking myself for not doing it years ago, as i had my left leg amputated well above the knee, and some bowel removed all due to smoking and that sadly is a fact, if you doubt that please check with your Dr, i wish you good luck in your efforts, BUT YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU WANT TO Honestly

Illogicology
While the "just quit" answer sounds hollow and unhelpful at first it really is the strongest response.

Giving up smoking is so challenging because there is both a chemical and psychological addiction, different gimmicks will only adress one side of this problem. Patches and other tangible "cures" that become progressively weaker will help your addiction to Nicotine but ignore the psychological need to relieve stress while trying to quit without any kind of assistance may leave you feeling entirely overwhelmed.

The best way to quit smoking is to be ready for it, keep in mind that it gets harder to quit the long you smoke and if you keep putting it off then it may never happen. Above all else you need to remember that nobody can quit for you, it sound cliché I know but if you're not prepared to rely on yourself entirely and force yourself to stop then you'll never be able to accomplish your goal.

its willpower, you gotta have faith, willpower and aims. Firstly don't cut off straight away, try to reduce the amounts of cigarrettes you have weekly but 2. Trust me, in the long run you would give up. Second of all, when you think you need a cigarrete try and find an alternative, like sugar free sweets etc. Go to support groups and keep yourself occupied.

Its a hard habit to give up but don't quit trying because I've heard that it takes a couple of tries before you can really do it. When you think about smoking have some tea or go for a walk do something you really like to take your mind off of it. You will be dehydrated so drink lots of water. Do something with your hands like pick up a hobbly like crochet or cross stitch. I wish you good luck and keep trying.

What helped me quit was doing things that took both hands and all my concentration. Crafts are great for this.
The other thing that helped me was avoiding my usual traps. I used to adore smoking in the car or on my boat. Well, the boat is gone now. As for the car, I started listening and ocassionally calling into talk radio shows. Nuts? Yep. Worked though. Staying away from other smokers helped too. Once my ex was out of my life, I lost my "smoking buddy". I also hit the gym more, which made me feel *really* guilty about puffing on a stick.
Everyone has his or her own reasons and methods for stopping. Try to identify when and where that stress kicks in. That's the key.

An excellent way to quit is to cut back a little at the time. It will take a month or two. It's all according to how often you have to smoke.Time yourself between cigarettes and gradually lengthen the time between smokes. Find a hobby that will keep your mind off of wanting that cigarette. When your down to a couple of smokes a day, you know you got it whooped. Good Luck =)

I smoked for 20 years, I quit 10 years ago, I couldn't afford smoking nowadays anyways!
When you first started smoking, it tasted like crap, you coughed and coughed, but you patted yourself on the back and thought that was great, until you got hooked.
Use the same method for quitting as you used for starting.
The first week I quit for 1 day, I patted myself on the back and was so proud, the second week 2 days, again patted myself on the back and was so proud, the third week 3 days, etc.,etc., etc.

Just quit, there's nothin to it !!! yuk, yuk -- after 40 plus years
of heavey smoking (2-3 packs per day), 30 years of which
were trying to quit, I got my doctor to prescribe 'CHANTIX",
and have been smoke free for three months now. It works
someway with "pleasure center" of the brain and you don't
have the cravings like you have cold turkey, gradual withdrawal,
patch, gum, hyponosis (I've tried them all).

Give it a try, and regarless of the outcome --Don't quit
quitting -- I'm on your side

Read Alan Carrs Easy Way to Stop Smoking (your first answerer did and so did I) It really was easy - I just stopped - no patches no gum just determination and Alan Carr in my pocket!

Oh and stop saying give up smoking - give up implies that you are going to lose something precious - you're not you've got nothing to lose and so much to gain!

I put my first years cigarette money in a jar and took my son to Spain for 2 weeks on it!!

Good luck!

Think smoking makes you look sexy? That you could quit any time? Think again.
Myth 1: Smoking looks sexy.
Or at least, that's what the tobacco industry would like you to think. Well, it may look glamorous now, but just wait. Smoking causes deep wrinkles, and yellow teeth are a by-product of years of smoking. Smoking also contributes to osteoporosis, or thinning of the bones, which can cause stooped posture and broken bones — not a pretty picture. In fact, women who smoke reach menopause at a younger age than nonsmokers. And, as nonsmokers can tell you, kissing someone who smokes is not tasty, let alone sexy.
Myth 2: If I quit, I'll gain weight.
You might, but there are a lot less destructive ways to lose the weight. Most people gain no more than 10 pounds. Planning a healthy diet and increasing your activity level will help keep off the pounds. Some of the medications used to help quit smoking can also assist in delaying weight gain.
Myth 3: I'll quit when I'm pregnant.
It may be harder to get pregnant if you smoke because smoking is a major cause of infertility. Women who smoke have an increased chance of miscarriage and complications during pregnancy. Also, it might take you a couple of attempts to actually stop smoking, so your chances of success with quitting are better the earlier you start.
Myth 4: One cigarette won't hurt.
Yes, it will. Every cigarette you smoke takes minutes off your life and keeps you in a Nicotine-addicted state. And, if you smoke around other people, you're hurting them — especially if they have asthma, heart disease, allergies or are very young.
Myth 5: I'm young — I'll quit in the next few years.
Nearly all adult women who smoke started as teenagers. Most teenagers who smoke daily don't expect to continue smoking, but most are still smoking five years later.
Myth 6: I smoke light cigarettes, so it's not so bad.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these so-called "light" cigarettes have the same ingredients as regular cigarettes, including lead, ammonia, benzene, DDT, butane gas, carbon monoxide, arsenic and polonium 210.
Myth 7: Breast cancer is the number one cancer killer of women.
Nope, it's lung cancer. The increasing number of deaths due to lung cancer is directly linked to increased rates of smoking in women. Also, a major risk factor in the overall number one killer of women — heart disease — is smoking.
