Drink Grapefruit Juice! It kills the cravings, plus the taste will distract his mind for a few moments. :)

Hey , well Congrats... I quit in September for good. I tried several times before that but i eventually went to the doctor, he sent me to a class, it was 4 sessions, one hour long, and they gave me some medicine and the patch/
I also looked up as much as i could while i was in the process, here are some tips from a friend
TO ANYONE TRYING TO QUIT: THIS IS WHAT HELPED ME 1.) DRINK LOTS OF WATER, IT WILL HELP FLUSH THE TOXINS FROM YOUR BODY .....ALSO DRINK ORANGE JUICE FOR THE VITAMINS 2.) CHEW Cinnamon GUM OR CHEW ON Cinnamon STICKS...SOMETHING IN THE Cinnamon HELPS 3.) WHEN THE CRAVING HITS YOU, DO ANYTHING YOU CAN TO GET YOUR MIND OFF OF THE CRAVING, AS IT WILL ONLY LAST APPROX. 5 MINUTES.... 4.) ALL I CAN SAY IS GOOD LUCK....IT IS WELL WORTH THE QUIT...YOUR LIFE WILL BE MUCH BETTER FOR IT !!!! 5.) PERSONS PLACES AND THINGS MUST CHANGE TIL YOU ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO BE AROUND IT

I've also been told that lollipops are good because it gives you something to do with both your hands and your mouth. Also try to avoid going to the pub (unless you're in a country where smoking is banned in public places) cos people will be smoking around you. Go to the cinema maybe?

It's only been seven short days and already he smells better!
His sense of smell will take a little while to perk back up, but even after only a week may have improved enough for him to smell a smoker (not while they are have a cigarette, that will just cause craving!) up close and personal and see how stinky they are.
Good luck, Monitorhead! Your chances of dying from cancer just dropped dramatically!

Every instinct in my body is screaming "Don't do it Monnog! The world needs every smoker it can lay its lungs on!"
Howwwwever, in an attempt to support this unpleasant nod to the principle of living longer, I would invoke the wisdom of George Lucas, who through the little green troll of inverted syntax, said "there is no try, there is only do...or do not."
You've done. You don't smoke any more. The hell you're in is just the smoke leaving your system. Do ANYTHING to keep yourself occupied till it's gone. Rob banks, that's judged less harshly than smoking these days. Play hopscotch. Buy a drumkit. Count the worms in your new garden. Clean everything that comes within reach, including the penguins at the local zoo. Juggle cats. Go and threaten Charlton Heston with a monkey. Go and throw brain cells at the President, see if he can identify what they are. Fit springs to the soles of your shoes, flap your arms and bounce down the street demanding to be called Icarus.
That might not help with the cravings, but it should at least give you other things to think about!

Every time you want a smoke you to need to do something to distract yourself from the want & need. You can eat something, run like Richard suggested, look at photos of Laura, drink a glass of water, suck on a Lemmon Drop, have someone punch you, have a little afternoon delight regardless of the time of day, etc. Just don’t do the same thing every time or you might end up replacing one habit for another.

yes i like Richard's answer...i did it the opposite way...starting running last May (2 minutes was my limit)...anyway by Late December was running 4 miles and still smoking...seemed crazy...quit on January 2 and by January 20th i was running 6 miles easier than i was running the four miles...i don't regret quitting...the exercise REALLY HELPS!!! It appeals to your logic, it takes time (less idle time) and it helps keep off the weight...i rarely miss it at all now.

I quit ten years ago... probably one of the best decisions I ever made. I always tried to focus on all the negatives of smoking, and how if I could just reach that doorway at the end of that long, dark hallway of cravings I'd come out the other side into sunshine & fresh air.
Sometimes, when I was really having a bad craving, I'd play time traveller and imagine what my future self - lying in a cancer ward in horrible pain - would say to me as I lit up that white coffin nail.

I know how it feels, I guess the best way is to tell them that you admire there strong will, and keep on encouraging them.
It is a hard thing to keep up but always remind them that they can make it.
Hang in there Monitor's head..

wow 7 days!
that's great!
i quited (not fully) because i have a nagging non-smoking husband lol
not much help huh?
some of my ideas:
- eat more fruits (watermelon, cantaloupe, orange)
- eat chewing gums (bring them everywhere!)
- exercise more
- if he misses the feel of ciggy sticks on his lips, try arabic sheesha (mind the spelling) with aromatherapy thingy

Hang in there buddy! I wish I had the balls to go cold turkey! If you start having trouble, go to a hypnotist. I know a VERY skeptical person who tried it and it worked for him!

Seven days? Not bad! Words of encouragement.... hmmm. Well, just remember that when you're caught peeping into your hot neighbor's window again, this time you'll be able to outrun the police!
Kendra makes a good point too, you could always ask MnotG to pull a "Misery" on ya.

Throw rubber bands at him any time he tries to light up...
And it's amusing for you! :) *smack!* :)
OR you could put him on birth control. If you smoke while you're on birth control, especially the patch, you could get blood clots, the risk of stroke, or heart attack. I'm sure he wouldn't want to take that risk! :)

Monitorhead --
Run. Get away from the keyboard just long enough to go outside and run. It may not be very far, just far enough for you to get winded.
The cilia in your lungs are coming back to life. They need a little help to clear some of that fluid and poop in your lungs moving up and out.
Sure you might have to stop and spit up some stuff, but that is the best way for you to know that YOUR LUNGS ARE WORKING again. This will get better if you do it every day.
Keep at it, you can do this. Gum, chewing pencils or dowels, drinking extra fluids and Licorice will all help.
And pay no attention to the pipe in the pix. MnG has it and she ain't smoking it either.

Well, having quit myself I must say it is difficult.... especially "cold turkey". I remember there were days that were easy, days that were hard and days that were close to impossible. I had a huge problem trying to find something worthy of replacing my cigarette addiction. Gum didn't do it, drinking water never worked, chewing on pens only ruined my teeth, and everything started looking like a cigarette. What did work for me was hiking. I hiked the Na Pali coast in Kauai and I was a hurtin' pup. I felt like somebody stabbed me in the lungs. It was at that point when I thought "hey Robin, smoking has done some damage here. Let's work on fixin' this."
And so every day I would wake up and say "today I won't have a cigarette.....maybe tomorrow I will". And then I'd go about my business trying to keep my mind occupied. The tough times were when I had a glass of wine or when I was finished with a meal. It took awhile for me to realize the meal ends when the food is gone....not when I light up a cigarette. In fact, 5 years later, I still crave a nice smoke once in awhile. I think it is something that stays with you always. But the intense urges that you experience in the beginning will soon fade. Each day will get slightly easier and before you know it weeks turn into months and months turn into years.
What Monitorhead is going through is rough but I can tell he is strong enough to make it through. Please remind him, that if he caves in and lights up, although it won't be the end of the world, he will have to start at square one again when quitting. 7 days is awesome. Keep up the good work!
