Actually, yes. Nicotine is a psychoactive drug. As such it helps you deal with stress, calms you down when you are tense, peps you up when you are feeling lethargic, helps you concentrate more effectively, makes it easier to deal with unpleasant feelings, produces a mild state of euphoria, and increases the metabolism so it helps keep off excess weight.

Obviously, the negatives far outweigh the benefits, but smokers who do not acknowledge the benefits are setting themselves up for failure when trying to quit. They must find out how the benefits are "helping" them and come up with alternative strategies for getting those good feelings/benefits after they quit, or they are more likely to relapse.

All the potential health benifits of smoking can be achieved by other means that do not cause as much or any harm to the body.

Benifits -
Socializaiton. The anti-smoking campaigns have created smoke breaks. This has led to in places where smoking break rooms still exist the smokers break room being the social center of the place. In areas where smokers are driven outdoors smokers gather on thier breaks. Smokers in general have considerably more social interaction with co-workers than non-smokers and this is a major health benifit.

People with low blood pressure. Smoking elevates blood pressure. It is also about on par with potential harm as some drugs to elevate blood pressure.

Diet - Many smokers use cigs as a method of dietary control. Being obese is at least as unhealthy as smoking. Being an obese smoker is akin to long term suicide. Being an obese smoker who drinks booze and lives a stressfull life IS rapid suicide.

Air filtration - In some areas like LA and Houston I'm not so sure that Cig smoke is worse than unfiltered air. In fact it might be a real improvement. I'm only being half joking with this particuler issue.

Stress alliviation - Smokers use cigs as physical and psychological stress and boredom relief. This can have a real impact on the health of a person. Stress is far worse on a body than ANYTHING you can put in a body. Type A people in particuler need an active method of stress relief. Smoking is very common for this among Type A people.

Again as I said there are safer alternitives to all of these. I have smoked for far too long. I would not start if I had it all over to do again. It's an addiction and one of the strongest out there both physically and mentally. Hold on lighting a smoke. The primary health risks are exagerated and mostly due to additives but are quite real. Smoking causes elevated blood pressure, if you smoke enough of anything it will cause emphasimia. You face elevated risks of cancers of mouth throat and lung. Smokers are also at risk of dieing from fire hazards. Rather rare but falling asleep with a lit cig used to be a common cause of death. A Nigerian one blew up 300 people including themself by lighting a Cig around an gass pipeline leak they were siphoning from.

So overall even those who benift from some health benifits of smoking, the risks and dangers outweigh those benifits.

The consequences far out weight the benefits.

It's uncommon knowledge for people to know that there really are benefits to smoking. After all... Why would someone smoke unless there were benefits?

Smoking has immediate benefits of causing the body to relax, improving digestion (decreases constipation), and can even help stop an Asthma attack (I've seen it first hand), not to mention it makes people look "cool," and provides a method in which people can make friends (going out for a smoke break).

Now, is that really worth the consequences of smoking? Heart disease, emphysema, chronic cough, rank smelling clothing, cancer, etc.?

Looking at the other answers it looks like a big no.I am a smoker unfortunately and have been in a great deal of pain with a fracture for over 12months( nothing to do with the smoking ).I have found smoking helpful on bad days.It seems to relax me,not that I think smoking is good and yes I do wish i had never started.

When you smoke your lung capacity increases, this is due to your body having to take in more air to get the required amount of Oxygen into the red blood cells (smokers have fewer blood cells). Due to the increased lung capacity smokers who then give up smoking are able to take in more air and therefore more Oxygen (the red blood cell count will return to normal after giving up). This means after smoking and giving up you will in theory be able to perform better whilst exercising then someone who never smoked as you can take in more oxygen than them....assuming you didn't die from the smoking.
