Hold your breath. No, seriously - but do it as I describe below, don't just stop breathing for 30 seconds and think that will work.
Hyperventilate with a few fast, deep breaths to blow off carbon dioxide (this will help you hold your breath longer - but don't do it too much or it can make you pass out).
Take a deep breath in and hold it by locking every muscle in your chest and abdomen. Concentrate on locking the muscles in your neck and throat especially. Hold like this as long as you confortably can - if you hyperventialted it should be a couple of minutes. You will probably feel some hiccups 'dry firing' while you are 'locked down.' They will most likely get weaker and farther apart as you do this.
Repeat this procedure a few times in a row until the hiccups go away. I've always had success with this, though a few times if the hiccups are really bad I've had to repeat it for 10 minutes or so (not hold my breath 10 minutes straight - but repeat the 'hyperventialte - hold - hyperventilate- hold cycle for 10 minutes)
Hope this helps you out.

hiccups is the term used for the spasming of the Diaphragm. to rid this you need to stop the spasming. i no it sounds stupid but take a deep breath to completely fill your lungs, hold it for a good 30 seconds then slowly let it out. I'm really bad with hiccups and nothing worked until i discovered this way. it is best to do it with your head submerged under water.

Hiccoughs are an involuntary spasm of the Diaphragm. In order to cure them you must stop the spasm. Concentrating on a different activity can help such as drinking from the far side of a glass, but the best thing is to breath in, hold your abdominal muscles in, count to five and repeat several times. Laughing, coughing and sneezing also help.

you'll need a friend or family member to help you here, but it works for me and seems to be good for young children.
get a friend and just before you hiccup you need to tell them, be sure to tell them before you do.
someone told me this worked because you hiccup because of extra oxygen in the body and by concentrating the brain uses up the extra oxygen.
good luck

Hiccups are caused by a spasming of the Diaphragm (the muscle that controls breathing). The "holding breath" method is meant to force your Diaphragm to pause for longer than usual and so stop the spasming, though it isn't always effective.
The method I find most effective is distraction - as soon as you stop thinking about hiccups, they seem to stop. However, it's quite difficult to stop thinking about them - this is where the distraction comes in. All the "drink from the wrong side of the glass" stuff is meant to be difficult so as to make you concentrate on that so fully, that you forget about the hiccups and they go away. Reading a book or whatever you find most distracting should help.
Another method reported as working very successful by parents is to say to their child "I'll give you 10p for every hiccup from now" and much to the child's disappointment the hiccups usually stop instantly!!

the reason most get hiccups is from eating something too fast or something. you should NEVER hold your breath to get rid of hiccups.. actually the complete opposite. the best thing to do is lie on your back and take slow, deep breaths. i read this in a science book.. i forget what the thing is called.. but something in your body basically goes nuts and that's how you get hiccups.. by laying down and breathing, it settles it down a bit.. hope i helped... and i hope i dont sound too crazy.. lol.

OK--this method has worked every single time for me, and every single time for someone else I've told about it to. All you do is get a lemon and cut it in quarters and suck on a piece. If you have any Angastora Bitters around, put a few drops of that on the lemon slice. (Bitters are used by bartenders to mix certain drinks, so you can buy them at a liquor store.) But these are not necessary. I mention them because the 1st time I learned about this hiccup cure I was in a bar and had a bad case of hiccups--no, wasn't drunk! LOL) and I tried the water, and the bag, and all that and this bartender turned me on to this cure.

I watched one of my friends do this once... it was pretty impressive.
My friend had a wicked case of hiccups, and someone went up to her and said "I bet you £50 that you wont hiccup again"... And I swear to god she stopped!!!!!!
But my trick is to drink something fizzy from the opposite side of the glass...

Push a pencil, horizontally of course, all the way back in your mouth as far as you can and then bite down on it with your back teeth. Now, pour yourself a glass a warm water, lean over the sink, and drink the water whilst keeping your back teeth tightly closed on the pencil. This method is sort of messy, so be sure to have a towel handy to mop off your chin.
Good luck, and I hope this method works for you! Hic!

breathe in, and in and in, til you cant breathe in any more, then breahte in some more..hold is for a second, and relesae it slowly.. this can take a few goes before you dont hicup in the middle of it all.. it evidently stops the Diaphragm spasming and it works for me...

this is a stupid cure but it works. and everyone i've told about it says it works for them as well:
drink a glass of water from the other side of the cup. it takes a bit of bending and stooping and balancing but it works. put your lips on the side of the cup opposite you. bend forward and tip the bottom of the cup upwards to drink. a few gulps this way always cures my hiccups.
