Yes, you do sound like you are depressed. Depression comes in different forms and levels though. Not all depressed people are suicidal, and a lot of depressed people "seem" completely functional even if they feel a little hollow inside.
If there is something particular that is making you sad, then you should talk to people about it and not hide it. Bring it out and face it.
If there isn't anything in particular you can think of, or maybe even if there is, then figure out what things you care about. Perhaps there is something you can do to improve someone else's life. Often helping others can teach you how to help yourself and give you a purpose in life.
Good luck, and I wish you all the best (and to remain cancer free).

As a psychiatrist, I have to concur with previous recommendations to see a doctor. It doesn't necessarily have to be a counselor or a psychiatrist to start, your family doc should be able to point you in the right direction. There are many conditions that can cause symptoms like you describe. They range from psychiatric issues such as depression, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, relational problems to medical problems such as hypothyroidism, Wilson's disease, neurological problems and various nutritional deficiencies. People have many misperceptions about mental illness including the idea that they must feel or act a certain way to have a particular problem. That is true to a degree but I can tell you that the vast majority of people I see with depression are not so depressed that they cannot get out of bed. That does not mean that they are not depressed and in some populations, like in children, depression can manifest in ways that run counter to the traditional concept of depression held by the lay public.
This is all a long way of saying that I agree you need to see someone. You are 21 years old with your whole life ahead of you and, I would point out, its all of the good stuff-getting married, having kids, having grandkids, finding yourself, etc-not just the disruption you can feel in your teens and early twenties. If you are distracted by intrustive thoughts of death at 21 rather than looking forward to the future, I consider that as impairing as not being able to get out of bed. So, I'd make that appointment.
And as an aside, drugs and alcohol have a significant effect on mood. If you are putting away the sauce on a regular basis, even if you don't perceive it to be a problem, nows the time to stop. No sense in swilling down a neurodepressant when you're already feeling down, you know?

Hi,i can trully identify with the feelings you are going through!
I started at age of 15yrs ,my mum took me to the gp who gave me tranquilizers,im now 43yrs old still here, i have 4 children,2 adults,20yrs ,19 yrs, and 1 aged 14yrs old,who has a brain tumor and had 14 ops in the last yr1,and a 8 yr old .
Over the yrs i have wanted many times to end it!,the thoughts often so overwhelming i felt insane and so afraid, also weary, however im here, alive, still up one day and next down,i have now stopped trying to fight these thoughts, when they come ,i just think been here before, they are only thoughts,in a practical sense, you really have only two options when it comes to dealing with neg thoughts.
You can analyze them, ponder, think through, study, think some more....or you can learn to ignore them, dismiss ,pay less attention to,dont take to seriously.
When you have a thought, any thought, thats all it is,a thought!.
IT CANT HURT YOU,a low mood is not the time to analze your life,or wanting to die,to do so is emotional suicide!
Practice these words "This too shall pass"
IT WILL,i wish you all the best,im sorry if i sound like im preaching,im not,i know what horror it can be to be in the mental frame of mind your in,keep it a day at a time, hugs mandy.

Some people are clinically depressed because of a chemical imbalance in the brain. They may suddenly begin crying and not even know why. If you have serious issues then your best bet would be to get counseling. If you don't know why your depressed go to a doctor, you may need medication. Be careful what you wish for, don't do anything stupid seek some help and find out what's wrong, your worth it believe it!

It may be that you have what is called a dysthemic personality ie no major depression just a general reduced mood (judging solely by the fact that you say you always have felt this way). See a doctor anyway, at 21 you could be doing with enjoying life a bit more (although it is a myth that youth = happiness, there is stress involved in being young and making your way).
I am never one to say cheer up and all will be well, but there is hope, good things do happen and if you try to expose yourself to the opportunities for them to arise you maximise your chances. One thing i will tell you from experience is that you may be a completely different person by the time you are in your thirties.

I have the same thing some days are better than others. Most days I feel so unwanted and I just want to slip down the stairs or start to be bellemic( I love my food in my stomach though) just so that they will love me more. The only place I never feel not loved or unwanted is at....... church! Infact I have a guy at my church that I really connect with and I am pretty sure we are Boyfriend and Girlfriend.

There are different levels of depression.
YOU are definitely depressed. No worries though!! You can go to the Doc and tell him/her how you feel and they can get you going with the right treatment.
I have been there before and once they get the right treatment going you will kick yourself for missing out on the life that has already passed you by.

Please speak to a professional about how you feel. There are many levels of depression and reactions. You should get evaluated so that you may receive the proper medical care before your depression causes you serious harm.
Good luck and take care...

Please get some help. If your not sure where to start, find a relative or friend you feel comfortable talking to that can help, and tell them what is going on. My sister has depression and it doesn't always mean a person " Cant function". But it can lead to bigger problems. I pray you find happiness.
PS. Remember happiness is different for everyone, so find your own.

You can be depressed and function. Why don't you go see a doctor and go on medication. To me, you sound like you suffer from depression. Does anyone else in your family suffer from it? I have been on medicine for anxiety and depression for 8 years. I am 39 yrs old. It really can change your life. Go seek help. Life is worth living and I'm sure you are a wonderful person. :)

depressed people most certainly can function. A few years ago i was labeled chronically depressed. I still gpt up, went to school, acted happy, held a job and so on. Don't believe everything people say. It does sound as if you are depressed. Please go and see a metnal health professional. They wil be able to diagnose you and believe it or not therapy is also a great resource.

symptoms of deppression:
Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
A bleak outlook—nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.
Loss of interest in dailly activities
No interest in or ability to enjoy former hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex.
Appetite or weight changes
Significant weight loss or weight gain—a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month.
Sleep changes
Either insomnia or oversleeping (also known as hypersomnia).
Psychomotor agitation or retardation
Either feeling “keyed up” and restless or sluggish and physically slowed down.
Loss of energy
Feeling fatigued and physically drained. Even small tasks are exhausting or take longer.
Self-loathing
Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. Harsh criticism of perceived faults and mistakes.
Concentration problems
Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.
Irritability
Easily annoyed or frustrated. Lashing out in anger or snapping at others.

i think you might have understood some facts wrong, its said that people who suffer from depression feel like they dont want to get out of bed.. like they dont have fun in life and they dont feel a reason to get up in the morning, its not that they CANT get out of bed, its that they dont feel like living because theyre not happy with their lives, even if nothings wrong. you deffinately have depression. you can see your doctor about antidepression pills and that sad feeling will go away, also if theres a reason why you feel this way and its not just for no reason, you should see a counselor or something and talk it out and that might help. but deffinately see your doctor about some medication.

i hope you can get yourself to feel better. :)

Cheer up. It might never happen.
Is there anything you are worried or unhappy about or are you depressed alththough you are content with your life? You are at an age when change is constant and unyeilding and there is lots of pressure to fit in.
If you are lonely, in trouble with the law or poor, for example, then you have something to be miserable about so it is not clinical depression. If you were clinically depressed since childhood then your parents would have noticed, I'm sure.
