I went through a horredous depression following a breakdown just over a year ago. The depression lasted near seven months before the symptoms got better. The first four or five were the worst as the depression was often accompanied by high anxiety. It was horrible; each day a struggle and terrible mental anguish. Getting up in the mornings was the worst. Thank goodness for talk therapy and the support of my sister and, amazingly, my ex-husband. I still attend therapy and take medications for the breakdown (was a psychosis). I wish you well in your struggle. Hard as it may seem at times as you are going through it, it can and does get better. Make some personal lifestyle changes too. Better diet and increase the exercise and fresh air.
As someone wrote - if it is situational depression (as mine was) then it is usually only lasts for varying lengths of time. Clinical or manic depression usually lasts years or even lifelong.

I suffered for about a year. I needed meds to help me get over it. I know people who have suffered for much longer or much less. It just depends. It really helps to see a therapist though in my opinion. I was helped greatly by seeing one.

about a year from starting tablets to coming off them, the 1st tablets i had didn't suit and made me paranoid. got them changed and was ok, knew when i felt better, i could think logically, could answer questions i asked myself, was sure of what i'd said and could remember saying it. i just knew and weened myself off them, but even tho i did this gradually, i'd lay in bed at night when i was relaxed and shake, very odd but wore off in time, suppose a kind of withdrawl.

7 years or less, off and on. I think I have social anxiety, which probably's a cause of my depression.

what kind of depression? i had the after baby blues depression that lasted for many years because it was not widely talked about in the 80's , it got very severe by the time i was 32 , and it was caused by having children and imbalanced hormones , but after i saw my doctor because i felt i was acting very out of context from my normal self , he put me on Prozac and it balanced my hormones and after 1 year of taking it i am all better now

Mine started out of nowhere when I was 19....I'm now 23...but it changed. It started as primarily depression...now I have anxiety as well. Every year it seems to change as my life changes... does that make sense?

I've had it since I was probably around 11 or 12 but was diagnosed when I was 23. I take Zoloft for depression. Sometimes I have counseling. It never completely goes away but meds and counseling GREATLY improve things. I've been on Zoloft for 14 years.

My depression tends to be reactive ie. if someone dies, too much stress at work, breakup with my bf etc. But I have had it on and off since I was 18 so about 6 years. Each time I have it I think Ill never smile again, never enjoy doing things like cooking etc and this goes on for either a few days, weeks or months. But then one day I wake up and I feel a bit better, and the next a bit more better, and then one day I feel so normal I could cry. And then you look back and think why was i so depressd?I know when you're in the middle of a depressive bout it feels so dark and lonely, but you will honestly get through it. And if you feel suicidal (I know I have) then you HAVE to talk to someone you trust straight away, DONT let this sit!!Good luck and hope it passes soon!!xxx

Off and on for 15 or so years. Treating it with meds and about two years of counseling helped a great deal.

I used to get it a lot esp as a teenager. But you move on and find new ways to cope.I still get the blues like anybody.I'ts a gradual thing - it's like having a cold with a nasty cough, you keep coughing for ages then one day you suddenly realise that you're not coughing anymore. It's like that with me.I don't know who said it but this helps me sometimes "The miracle is not that we succeed but that we keep trying".Sweet.

at least 30 years. either hyper or depressed. guess it was bi-polar. the only thing that help was no meds and a strict discipline schedule. the thing is to stay out of trouble and try to avoid any mind altering substance of any kind.
i have read what the shrinks and counselors have read. it never works for me. only one ever that i bonded with and liked. looking back, he was a really neat and interesting guy. however, he should have figured me out. i had to move to another area and never saw him again. had me on silly meds. totally inappropriate but it was fun visiting with him. only one that rode motorcycles and played the banjo!

I've had severe depression on and off for 7 years, however in the past year or so I got pissed off with feeling like crap and forced myself to regain control of my mind.
I now do things one at a time and refuse to think about anything else. Most of the time I dont 'think' I just do because if I start to think I talk myself out of it. And I live by my new motto 'do not let your mind control you, you control it'
I do still have bad days, really bad days and I firmly believe I will never be free of depression completely, it's always there waiting to rear its ugly head, but the moment it starts, I stamp on it, squash it flat and throw it out of the door. I will NOT let it back.
And if you really want it, anyone can do it, you've just got to be strong REALLY STRONG!!
