you sound sad, but at least you asking for help out here. I dont think they will lock you up, but i could be wrong, but getting help sounds like the way to go no matter. Hopefully they can find out why you feel like you need to do this. Hang in there, life has alot to offer......it's not all bad, just seems hard sometimes |

If only you are a danger to yourself or others will you be 'locked up.' If you go to your MD and are honest about what you have been doing and are clearly seeking help....he/she will help you not 'lock you up.' Perhaps you could get some medication for depression/anxiety, ect or get a referral to a therapist. Best of luck to you, I hope you get your problems worked out. |

You should definitely see a doctor. If you go see a therapist or psychiatrist, I really doubt you will be hospitalized against your will. If you were to cut so that you needed stitches and then went to the ER, then you probably would be admitted. When you see the therapist, tell them the truth. I assume you are not self-harming as a means of committing suicide (most people have other reasons for self-harming although they may also be suicidal and have a suicide plan). Try to see a therapist who has experience in this area. Most therapists who have experience in this area view self-injury not as a prelude to suicide, but as a coping mechanism for dealing with extreme emotional pain. One of their valid concerns is that even if you are not trying to kill yourself, you could accidentally cut an artery or burn yourself so badly that you get a serious infection and could die accidentally. Self-injury is very common and can be done for many reasons. You need to talk to someone to find out why you are doing it. I do it (cutting and burning) for three reasons (in order of importance): (1) to distract myself from emotional pain (which is far worse) but being able to focus on physical pain (which is easier to deal with); (2) to snap myself back into reality when I am dissociating (this is a state where either you don't feel real (you feel as if you are outside of your body and watching yourself like you would watch a movie or where you feel that you are real but the rest of the world isn't; and (3) because I feel like I'm an evil person and need to be punished. There are many different treatments for self-injury (all involve talking (cognitive therapy or otherwise) and some also use medication as an adjunct to therapy. Medication would generally be used for people who self injure and have a psychiatric diagnosis (which most do) such as borderline personality disorder (women who cut or burn frequently are assigned this diagnosis, sometimes correctly, but many times incorrectly), depression or bipolar disorder. |

Maybe just see a counselor. Not like the school counselor (if you are in HS, because they will call your parents), just maybe see someone who will listen to you. From what I understand, it is just a way of dealing with pent-up emotions. Perhaps if you were able to talk about your emotions it would help a lot. I don't think they will lock you up, unless you are a REAL danger to yourself. |

well first you have to understand why you are doing it. are really depressed? do you really want to die? Either way you should definetly go see a doctor. there are lots of great meds out there to help. most of the time you can get help without getting locked up. as a former cutter i know all about this kind of thing. just try to remember, eventually there are good things that come and in the end its usually worth hanging around for. |

You need to see a psychologist. You won't be locked up. If you are cutting your arms or whatever self harm you are doing, you need to recognize that there are some deep underlying issues that need to be dealt with. It does not mean you need to be locked up. Everyone has emotional issues at some time in their lives. The important thing is to get to the underlying issues that make you hurt yourself and move forward and live a healthy life. You are a valuable person and don't need to live life like this. |

Locked up? Idk about that. But you shouldn't want to hurt yourself. I'm pretty sure you're a cool person and whatever problems you have you don't have to bare on your own. You can talk to people (FRIENDS!) about things and if they're really cool with you they'll listen and try to help you. If they're not who cares? You would have weeded out the people you don't need. If you ever need anything feel free to message me =] |

It is very, very unlikely that a doctor would lock up you. If they feared that you would committ suicide, they may consider it. It is rare that that happens. I think you should go see the doctor, they can help you. If you are depressed, they can help you. I don't mean to offend you by that, but many of the people who self harm suffer from depression. If you know why you cut, perhaps you could talk to a counselor or someone you trust about it. I would recommend talking to a counselor. I think you should check out the TWLOHA program. It stands for To Write Love On Her Arms. It is an association comletely devoted to self harm and depression. It is inspiring, and has helped many people, you could benefit from it. |

They don't lock you up if you're open and honest about it. If you're suicidal, they may, just to keep you from doing anything harmful to yourself. |

You have choices. I know someone that got help and you just go to a hospital. It's kind of like therapy and counseling. They might give you a medicine too. |

They almost never lock someone up for that....just when they decide that you are an immediate threat to your life or somebody else's safety. I'd see a doc about it....you don't deserve that much pain! |

They wont lock you up, but they'd definitely want to counsel you and perhaps put you on anti-depressants. Check it out, they can only lock you up if your an extreme danger to yourself or others. |

you won't get locked up, but you should definitely talk to Dr. or someone with professional education that can help you overcome the reasons you're hurting yourself. I personally don't understand the whole "cutter" thing, but there's gotta be SOME reason you're doing it, maybe if you figure out what you get from it, then you can fix whatever it is you don't get have, or how you feel, that makes you do that to yourself. |

You have to come clean, You know if you go for help you are less likely to be locked up but someone finds out on there own then you are for sure going to be put into a hospital for an eval. You can do this and you are strong. |

Talk to a counselor at your school. Don't make it a big issue - don't tell anybody. Go privately and keep it to yourself. But for sure, go talk to a counselor at school and tell him or her everything. They will help you. |

Hey. my name's sam. i'm 16, and i have been self harming for 3 years. i told someone, but i wasnt loked up. instead, i went to see a youth worker, and we discussed my "issues". you would never get loked up, and ite really your choice if you want to. i was told that i could go to the hospital to deal with it or just talk to a youth worker. you need to be 16 to not have your parents permission to see a councellor. good luck son. |

Hey JJ, I also self harm and I have been told I need to see a Doctor, I am also very scared I will be locked up. I don't think they will lock u up just make u talk to someone. I think there are only a few reasons why they would lock u up. If u don't want to see a doctor then don't. I made the choice of not seeing a Doctor, because I'm scared. Its ur choice do what u want. Good luck. If u have myspace u can talk 2 me. BTW I'm 17 http://www.myspace.com/mistfit_toy |
