You have to ask yourself why you are really doing it. Then i would say you have to just realise is it really helping anything and then the best thing to do is go to somebody you trust and loves you or/and cares so much about you and talk to them about it.

Hey,
Not to ignore everyones answers, but I don't think you need to panic and go to the Dr just yet. You said you'd been cutting yourself for three days, why do you think you are?? Has something especially bad happened recently?? And why did you cut, to feel pain, were you p*d off, sad, suicidal, bored??

First, the next time you pick up a knife, you should think about what you're doing to your body. Do you really want to make big dents in your skin and leave it scarred for life?? Not to mention the awkward questions you're bound to be asked. Tell yourself, I'll give it five minutes, and if I still want to cut, I can. It takes a lot of willpower but this can get you over the initial urge so you don't feel you "need" to cut.

You could try other methods of hurting yourself (not as bad as it sounds) depending on why you cut in the first place. If you need the pain, ping an elastic band around your wrist, squeeze an ice cube, hard.

If you're sad or bored, get up and do something. Phone a mate, read something you enjoy, get a hug from someone! Anything that makes you feel better. The same with anger, scream at the TV, throw un-breakable things across the room, get it all out somehow.

If you started cutting because you feel suicidal, ignore what I said and go to your Dr. Find someone to speak to.

For most people, cutting starts because of the emotion underneath, and becomes hard to stop because of habit and the comfort it gives. If you can break this before you get into the habit, you'll be great, it feels much better if you can do it yourself. Saying that, don't struggle on if you feel you can't do it alone, ask for help if you need it, be it from your GP or just a friend to phone when you feel down. Best of luck.

Hi, you may be using this as a way of 'coping' with some emotional pain. Try and figure out what it is that is upsetting you. Go and talk to your GP or a trusted friend or relative who will give you some support. With the cuts you already have, keep them clean so you don't get an infection. Good luck x

Ask yourself this, how many problems did you solve by cutting yourself?

Then think a little.

What are you thinking about just before you think to cut yourself?

Are you just focusing on yourself and your feelings?

If your best friend had this problem and he asked you for help what would you answer?

When you ask a question often you already know the answer.

I've been doing the same for 9 months, if you're a white male then you won't get any help from your doctor. It's up to you to stop. I use Ketamax (Ketamine) and the cuts are very deep, I get blood over my clothes all the time.

Only you can stop, doctors who are fundholders will be reluctant to spend money they see as their own on helping you.

i have been cutting myself for almost five years now,
and its become an addiction.

cutting cant become an addiction like overnight,
it takes time.

so you should stop before you go to far.
i dont want any other people to go through what i do.

try snapping a rubber band when you feel the need to cut.
it truly does help.

My sister works in a home for abused children, some of them self harm. She teaches them that when they get the urge to self harm to hold an ice cube in there hand for as long as possible until the pain of the cold becomes unbearable. The pain takes away the urge to self harm as you are more concerned about the cold pain.

Firstly, get rid of the knife/razor or whatever cutting implement you use. then try an alternative to cutting - for example, put an elastic band around your wrist and ping it really hard. it hurts and leaves a red mark, but doesn't harm. if you want the blood effect, draw on yourself with red pen, or red paint, or use fake blood from a joke shop. you should then get your release. or try holding ice in your hand, squeeze it really hard. for more alternatives, email me. alternatives should help stop the cutting, but you'll need to gradually wean yourself off of that as well to stop completely.

another method to stopping is to set yourself a number of days to not cut, then when you reach that goal, reward yourself (no cutting!). then set a longer goal, and so on, until you stop.

another good idea would be to see a doc/councellor/psychiatrist to deal with the problems that caused you to cut in the first place.

feel free to email me if you wanna talk.
stay strong, stay safe.

[i do understand it's easier siad than done but you gotta start somewhere]

Self harm is a serious thing and your right it can become an addiction. For me that is the most worrying thing about it.

You started 3 days ago.. so theres still time to stop before it gets worse.

Its good you want to stop because most people find that even though they start off small it gets worse and worse and deeper and deeper- you might not be endangering yourself or causing scars now- but you will..

The typical things i've heard people say work are say is 'put a rubber band round your wrist and twang it', 'draw on your skin with a red pen', 'cut into a plastic bottle' or 'hold ice'.

Decide to distract yourself, watch tv, do some art.. also I find deciding to put it off by 30 mins or an hour helps and when it gets to that time I actually often don't want to do it.

There must be an underlying cause, you need to sort that out or even if your not cutting it will come out in other ways and probably get worse.

Talk to your doctor and ask to be refered to a psychologist..

Theres not that much support out there for men who cut- so I really hope things improve for you.. all the best.

When you feel the need to cut, squeeze ice cubes in your hands till they melt, or if you dont have access to ice, pinch your ear-lobes or the under-neath of your thighs. it mimicks the relief

Contact a mental health specialist.....maybe an addictions counselor. You could call a local hospital, check your phone book, or get on line to be pointed in the right direction. The important thing is that you want to stop, and since you just started doing it so it will probably be a little simpler to get to the root of your problems. If all else fails, and you feel the urge to cut again, call a crisis hotline.

Try this link to the Mind website.

Understanding self-harm:
http://www.mind.org.uk/Information/Booklets/Understanding/Understanding+self-harm.htm

the information is easy to read and understand, and might help you to look at why you are doing this, and ways to overcome it.

Please go and talk to your GP and tell him what you are doing, and that you need help to stop. He won't judge you and he will have heard anything you tell him before, so he won't be shocked.

You could also try finding a mental health charity near to you:

http://www.mind.org.uk/Mind+in+your+area/

they are easy to access and much less formal than the health services, so that might make it easier for you. They deal with all kinds of mental ill health on a daily basis, so they are understanding, knowledgeable and they will offer you support.

Hope some of this helps.

Give the cutting item to a friend or family member and ask them to keep it. I only had one cutting device and when my brother found me cutting up he took it off me. I couldn't use anything else - it didn't feel the same. I stopped after that. However, if you feel that you could use more than one cutting tool, then you should go and see a doc. Its really a way of you being able to 'see' the pain your in so that you can experience it rather than be consumed by it. You are depressed obviously and need a little help to get you by for a little while. Don't wait or delay - whats the point of a miserable life when you can have a better one if you choose it. Good luck.

You either put sharp things out of reach and tell yourself that you will never give in NOW or you need to go and seek help now beacuse it will get worse it all depends on the type of motivation you have.

I am also a cutter, for 18 yrs off and on. I finally went to my family dr and shared with her. I was scared to death to do this but knew I needed help to stop. She was great and eventually sent me to a therapist who is helping work through the reasons I feel the need to self harm. I'm not saying it's easy and I just stopped, but having people who understand and are willing to help makes it a little better. Find someone, a dr or whatever, that you feel you can trust and won't freak out on you and reach out to them and ask for help, before it gets out of control. Good luck and take care.

I've been cutting myself for a year now and trust me it is something that needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later or it will take over your life. In the short term, hide all the things you use to cut, and use as many distraction techniques as possible, like watching dvd's or reading books. Then go and seek some professional help, your doctor is the best place to start, if they arent sympathetic go and see someone else until you get some help because you cant deal with this alone. Do everything you can to fight the urge and take care of any wounds you do have. Be careful because believe me, I would give anything to turn back the clock and get rid of my horrible scars that people in the street stare at and judge me for. Good luck.

hey!...
you need to find another solution to cutting...
find something that makes you feel as good as cutting does...
music?...art?...anything...different things suit different people...you just need to find the one thats suitable for you...
If things dont get any better then i'd see your GP or talk to someone you trust...
Get out of it now before you get in really deep...its such a vicious cycle to break...
take the help there is to offer...dont suffer in silence...
feel free to email me if you want to talk about anything...
take care and i wish you the best of luck...

Get someone you trust or yourself if you're strong enough to hide all of your knives and any items that you could use to cut yourself with. Razors, etc.
Remember, cutting may feel good in the moment, but after, the problem is still there. Losing blood over it and scaring your arm will get you in the long run.

The best way to deal with problems is face them, talk about it.
Go see a Psychiatrist, or talk to someone you trust.
You can stop your bad habits like cutting, etc; you just
have to want to do it, and if you need, get help.
It's never too late to do something about it.
Take care,
xx
