Maybe this will help you quit smoking ... imagine you're lying in a hospital bed hooked up to an oxygen tank because you're unable to breathe properly ... your lungs are riddled with cancerous growths ... you're in excruciating pain ... your kids will grow up without a dad ... get the picture??? If this isn't an incentive to stop smoking, I don't know what is

Try allan carrs easy way to stop smoking book cost approx £6. I never had any intention of ever giving up smoking (smoked for 20 years) and was given the book by a loved one 2 years ago 4 my birthday. i havn't had a cigarette since. Also get yourself a relaxation / hypnotherapy cd on stopping smoking to play when your going to sleep at night and this could possibly help you as well. good luck and well done for deciding to stop, paul.

Its different strokes for different folks but it is a very stupid habit so stop My mother smoked about 20 -30 a day and she said to my wife she was going to give up and my wife said "You wont be able to." My mother never smoked another cigarette from that moment. Mind you she was a very strong character and she was hell to be with for about 6 months

You can only do it if you really want to! The patches etc. only give short term physical relief and can do more harm than good. You are still linked to smoking if you use them. Beware of the problem with the 1st's. This is where the 1st time you do anything since quitting will trigger a craving. The 1st time you go to work/pub/resturant/holiday/etc. It can last for years if there are some things you only ever do once in a blue moon. Stick with it as it feels fantastic to have beaten it. Also expect that you will need something to take your mind off your 1st's. I gave up 2.5 years ago and i never thought i would manage, i am the weakest person i know, but i did. I have only had 2 in that time both while very drunk. If you really want to you will!!

Go out cold, that way you don't swap one dependancy for another.
I did four and a half years ago - the first week was hell but after that I knew I'd won, pity I had to suffer a minor stroke at 37 to learn my lesson.
Good luck mate - it'll be the best thing you ever do

Try smoking 2 less each day. So if you smoke like 10 a day try smoking 8 or 9 the next day. Patches is a really good choice. But if you want the best expert advice you should try the NHS stop smoking helpline- 0800 169 0 169 if you live in the UK or visit your GP and see if they have a list of contacts of clinics in the local area you could visit to help you and meet other people who also want to give up.

try cold turkey, go to smoking cessation at your local hospital, the lung association give pointers and help, smokers anonymous, I quit with hypnosis that was given in the local hospital (6 years smoke free now), there are patches, gum, pills from the doctor
the thing to do is KEEP TRYING! Eventually something will stick and you will see it through.
the Nicotine is out of your system in about 3 days, the "cues" or cravings happen for a while, but yoiu have to work at making changes such as doing somehting different when yoiu would normally smoke, i.e. when you are on phone, instead of sitting in your usual spot, go somewhere else to talk, or when you get in car and light up, then wipe dash board, or mirror instead, or drink water.
Good luck to you.

If you are ready some kind of Nicotine replacement therapy such as the patch, Nicotine inhaler, gum, etc. The patch worked for me. Also chew some sugarless gum or try hard candy. Try not to substitute food for cigarettes. When a craving hits, take a walk or do something till the craving passes and it does. I found the first 2 weeks were the worse but it does get better. Best of luck to you.

My doctor prescribed Wellbutrin to quit. I haven't had a cigarette in more than 10 years. Good Luck! I remember how hard it was to give it up but it can be done. I actually carried a sealed back of cigarettes for 2 weeks and chewed lots of gum!

Smoking, like other addictions, may be one way a body is coping with high insulin production manifesting as low blood sugar. I would suggest you get tested for these two things about 2 weeks after stopping cold turkey.
Then, if the tests are positive, find yourself a diet that cuts out all sugar and sugar substitutes, and tells you what portions of other foods provide what amount of carbohydrates.
If you want some suggestions, check out the library link at www.hufa.org. You may also want to read the article about Low Blood Sugar at that site. If your smoking was due to low blood sugar, a diet like this will help control your weight and may cut the cravings to nothing.

I smoked for 25 years - non-stop but I gave up recently using Nicorrette Inhalators. (a kind of plastic cigarette - looks a bit like a small tampon!) You puff on the inhalator and it gives you dose of Nicotine but without all the other hundreds of toxic chemicals. I have been off smoking now for 4 months and don't miss it at all (well sometimes) and I don't need the inhalators now either. Talk to your local chemist.
Makes giving up alot easier, feel great, think more clearly and I'm not out of breath all the time.
One thing I have noticed is that I gave up the same time I asked my 1st question on Yahoo answers - May, this year and so now I'm addicted to answering questions instead.!!!!!!!

and stick with it however hard it gets ... its not gonna be easy..
i gave up nearly 2 years ago and it was due to the patches and will power.

I smoked 2packs a day for 30 years.
I tried hypnosis, nicotine Gum, and the patch twice.
1year 11months 1week 3days and 10hrs ago I quit cold turkey.
I think that cold turkey has the highest long term success rate.
No matter what method you use,
at some point your going to be craving Nicotine.
Continuing to feed your body with small doses of Nicotine will prolong the withdrawal cravings. I think it's better try and get it out of your system as soon as possible.
People will tell you that after 72hrs the Nicotine is all gone from your body and everything after that is just mental will power.
Well, I'm here to tell you that is total BS.
The real story is that after 72hrs 95% of the Nicotine and its long term derivatives are gone. What this really means is that after 72hrs you will be having your max cravings.
I would recommend timing your quit so that your days 4 and 5 are on a weekend, vacation or slow days at work. Days 4 and 5 (post72hrs) will be the worst withdrawal cravings. Do what ever you have to, to get through those days, even if you have to call in sick to work and just curl up in bed.
BTW, if you do go with the patch, put it on at night before you go to bed. It takes several hours for the patch to start working and if you wait till the morning to put on a patch your going to be jonesing for a cig waiting for it to work.
Eventually you will start having moments of clarity where you don't think about cigarettes at all. Then those moments of clarity will start occurring more and more frequently.
People will also tell you that craving only last for 3 to 5 minutes. Well. that's not the whole story either.
In the first few weeks of quitting as your moments of clarity are increasing you'll get to where you'll have an hour at a time where your mind will be clear. Other hours will be mostly consumed with cravings. Individual cravings may last 3-5min each but if you string 10 of them together one right after another you have 50min of cravings and only 10min of clarity in that hour.
If you are really addicted to Nicotine now, you are always going to be a Nicotine addict. All ex smoking Nicotine addicts will have cravings for the rest of their lives. It may only be once a year but during that one annual craving you will want to whip someones tail to have a smoke. You just have to learn how to deal with and beat back that NICO-DEMON.
I would suggest downloading a quit counter to your PC that will track time quit, cigs not smoked, money saved, and time added to your life. http://www.silkquit.org has a pretty good quit counter.
Tell your friends and family that you are quitting and that you may need their emotional support. Another source of emotional support is to participate in an on-line forum of others going through the same thing. http://quitsmoking.about.com has a very active forum with a lot of information.
One battle-cry that has helped me is NOPE !
Not One Puff Ever !
NOPE!
Every time that the nicodemon plays tricks on you trying to get you to have just one more cig, or just one little puff to take the edge off, or maybe a pipe/cigar because you won't really inhale, JUST SAY NOPE ! Not One Puff Ever.
During those spontaneous cravings you will be going cold turkey against it. That's why I think that going cold turkey from the beginning of the quit has the highest long term success rate, you will know that you can overcome those cravings without any kind of patch or gum CRUTCH.
Don't be too surprised if after a week or two you get a sore throat and fever blisters. When you stop smoking, cells in your body will actually start to regenerate themselves and come back to life. Initially these newly awakened cell will be very sensitive and angry. So sore throats and cold sores are very common during the first few weeks of a quit.
Your sense of smell will increase dramatically. I can now smell a smoker two aisles over in a store. And it grosses me out to think that I used to smell like that and i didn't even know it. And do yourself a huge favor, do not cook any chili or beans for at least 3 months. your nose will thank you for avoiding those residual gasses :)
The Nicotine stains will disappear from your fingers.
Even the whites of your eyes may get whiter.
And if the only change in your lifestyle is to quit smoking,
then you will gain 40lbs of weight from a slower metabolism.
You will want to address your weight gain as soon as possible. Eliminate bad carbohydrates (sugars and processed flour) and increase your activity level (walk, jog, bike, etc).
Read this post at least twice
and you will know what to expect to be successful.
Quitting is a very difficult thing to do.
But, it is something that everyone goes through
only when they are truly ready to quit.
Good luck To You.

My method was to get really sick with bronchitis every year until I finally gave it up. I think that the most important thing is to really decide firmly that you're quitting, it's done. Don't be wishy-washy. If anything helps your resolve, great--maybe try hypnotherapy.
