There are natural deodorants that simply neutralize the smell, but allows for perspiration. Some people think that is the healthiest way to go...if you want to go that way, go to a health food store and look for the brand "Toms"

I suggest the age he starts to smell, there is no specific guidelines for this, if he smells than he can wear it, if it grows he can shave it, and so forth

Go ahead and get deodorant if he has b.o., but i would recommend something normal, don't try antiperspirant because it can really irritate skin.

Get him Antibacterial soap & show him how to wash.
Especially since you live in the tropics.
Emphasize that certain areas can smell strongly.
Armpits, groin area, feet, need to be washed properly.
Shirts need to be changed & washed regularly.
Use the natural deodorants with tea-tree oil.

We live in Texas, and it's hot and humid here. My son started wearing antiperspirant/deodorant (for my own sanity) when he was about 9. He's 19 now - and smells lovely - no ill effects.

If he stinks, he should be using a deodorant. Age doesn't matter.
You can be brutal and have a talk with him about it, or you can be subtle and simply buy him a deodorant and leave it on his bed. He should get the clue.

Yeah kids are starting young with everything now-a-days. Since he's still young, you can try to opt for Gentle, mild, and natural deodorants like the Toms of Maine brand. It's a bit pricier than regular brands but it's not high on chemicals and harsh fragrances like most brands of deodorant, which has its benefits if you're trying to stop the odor and protect him at the same time. There are other natural brands out there, you just have to pick and choose which one you like best. I suggested Toms of Maine brand because you can get it at most supermarkets and drug stores.
Good luck! : )

deodorant is ridiculous - plus, if u live in the tropics u shd be aware that mosquitoes LOVE deodorant so if u want to give him malaria that would be a good way to go about it. Deodorant is for women and wusses....... don't get him started......
get hold of some old fashioned CARBOLIC soap - if not available locally you can source it off the internet easily and get him to use that..... a nice masculine scrubbed-boy smell. if he still smells bad after a couple of days of that then see the doctor.
Also, i would have thought the gases in deodorants could harm young lungs - not worth risking........ Carbolic is the way to go.

All young boys stink. If it isn't BO, it's urine. Teach him to use deoderant early.... it will prolly fade once he becomes a man... but at the moment.. it's just how boys smell. Deal with it.

As soon as they start to smell....maybe for someone that young you should just purchase "deodorant" as opposed to "antiperspirant". It just seems like deodorant would have less chemicals....I had heard somewhere that the reason our kids are so much taller, and advancing in some areas quicker, is from all the additives and preservatives we put in our foods now....I don't know if that's true....but it's something to think about....

I think this is very much of an individual thing- there's not really a rule of thumb. If your son is starting to develop hormones that cause him to have BO, do the rest of the world a favor and give the boy some anti perspirant/deodorant!!

I say 11-12 years old. Around that time when I was in middle school , I got picked on by the other kids a lot about my body odor. (I'm 35 now) Use the the all natural stuff from stores that sell almost everything organic, if you really feel your kid needs something now. Even now I still use it. I can often remember the large number of under-arm rashes I got over years from all the chemicals and God knows what else they use in those corporate chain deodorants they sell in drug stores.

Everyone ought to use deodorant when they (or someone else!!!!) notices the odor! Nobody should have to 'wait' till a specific age to use deodorant (or to shave for that matter), it is highly personal and is dependent upon hormones, diet, activity, etc. My youngest son had to start using deodorant at about the same age as your son (I too, was surprised and asked the pediatrician).
Buy the guy a stick!!!
If you're worried about the aluminum being absorbed in his skin (possible link to Alzheimer's disease later on), start him out with the mineral salt type varieties. It works for a lot of folks, and the side effects in old age are nothing at all!). If it doesn't though.... Get him the regular variety. Just think if YOU had to go around all day STINKING.....Eewww. Your son is at one of the MANY fragile ages... Help him out. This is just what is normal for your son...
