It could end up infected and then you would most likely have to have it surgically removed. Hopefully, your tetanus shot is up to date.

I work with wood and have experience here. If you leave it in it's just going to sit there and maybe sometimes give you a little trouble, maybe not. I once had a deep splinter in my finger and a piece of it stayed in there for two years before I got tired of it and dug it out.

most of the time it festers up and will push itself out. but look for signs of infection such as heat in that spot, fever, extreme pain, edema and red streaks

but glass or metal sometimes goes deeper.

Most of the time your body rejects it. It moves closer to the surface of the skin. As other answerers have mentioned, check for infection.

you could get blood poisoning or tetanus. The sliver could work it's way into a vein. Get a tetanus shot and try to get it out.
