The nail has to be removed either you suck it up and pull the nail off or go to the doctor and have him remove it the outcome will be the same. Make sure you keep the nail bed clean and watch for signs of infection.

its really painful the first few weeks after it comes off since you dont have that hard nail protecting your toe. best to wrap it with a little bit of gauze to add a bit of protection.
it will grow back though...

DON'T PULL IT OUT YOURSELF! LET A PROFESSIONAL DO IT!
Pshhh...don't listen to the other people...you don't really need to immediately go to the doctor, unless the pain is REALLY REALLY (like a million times) bad, and you get an infection..
Well let me tell you about a similar experience I had when I was in 7th grade...
I was riding my bike with sandals, when suddenly, while I was making a turn, my right toe was scrapped into the ground. The road made of that whitish greyish old, rough asphalt. All the skin on my upper toe was completely torn off and exposed, and my toenail was pretty much split in two, just like yours. As soon as I got home, I washed off the blood with cold water and poured rubbing alcohol to kill off the germs. After that, I got a toe badage, applied Neosporin, and wrapped it around my toe.
For the first week, it hurt like HELL just to walk around. Eventually, I just kept replacing the bandages and kept applying Neosporin around the area. I tried to take showers, because I knew that if I took a bath, or exposed it to warm/hot water, my toe would become REALLY swollen, which was the last thing I wanted. After awhile (I think about 2-3 weeks after) I started to regrow my skin and toe nail. Now, the skin around there is pretty thick, and my toe nail is twice as hard as the other one.
So pretty much,
1)Apply alcohol so it doesn't get infected
2)Apply a bandage
3)Change it everyday or when it gets too dirty, and reapply Antibacterial ointments.
After awhile, the toenail will fall off and regrow itself...hopefully...if nothing happens for a long time, then yeah, they're right, you should see a doctor to get those little devils treated.
Hope this made you feel better, and good luck with that!

I would go to the walk in clinic or dr's office, they would soon sort it out, if it is really hurting badly.

Um, go to the clinic or doctor's office. I did something similar. Someone closed my thumb in a door and wouldn't open it...
Anyways, the nail split in two and I went to the clinic. They gave it two needles and drained out the blood. Then they just bandaged it up. A few weeks later they'll give you a splint or something. Mine was extra bad though so the nail came right off. If it does come off it'll take more than half a year to come back. Even if you didn't experience bleeding, it'd be best to visit a clinic.
Best wishes,
Andrea.
