if you broke it you could not move it nor use it if you sprained it you can walk but it hurts alot. Since it's swollen i would say you just sprained it just but some ice on it to reduce swelling.

if you broke it, it is VERY painful to walk on. if you sprained or twisted it, it doesn't hurt as much, but you still limp. i would see a doctor to make sure though. if it is broken and you put too much pressure on it, it might do even more damage.

An x-ray is the only way. And do not delay since walking on it can cause further damage.

X-Ray is the only way for accurate diagnosis.
Some sprains and strains can actually hurt more and take longer to heal than a break. Some breaks are hairline and do not really cause extreme pain since the break is not really rubbing bone against bone. You could safely wait a couple of days and see if the swelling or pain increases before going to the doctor. Many times even is it is a break they will not cast it until the swelling subsides somewhat.
Keep leg elevated, apply ice to the area for 10-20 min each hour and take Ibuprophen (as directed) for the next couple of days and see how it is on Monday. If pain and/or swelling continues to increase you should go directly to the hospital for treatment.

It's probably just sprained if your not screaming and crying and your on here asking about it! LOL I sprained my ankle before hurt like Hell but went away after a couple days. Put some ice on it and take some Tylenol. Try not to move it much and elevate it.
Funny story...when I was like 19 I thought I broke my toe it hurt so bad but it felt like I could just pull on it and it would like go back or something. Well that's just what I did...gave it a good yank and well then I knew it was broke, heard it crack and had to go directly to hospital.
So make sure you don't try pulling on your ankle! haha

The only sure way is with an xray. However, it is probably a sprain if you just twisted it.

If you are in so much pain you can't walk, it's broken. If you're not sure it's probably just twisted. (or if there's a jagged bone ripping through your skin, that might be a clue...) ;)

When you go to sleep, and wake up the next day, it should be bit better, which would mean that it is sprained.
I played alotta sports, so I kinda got some experience.
If it was broken, usually it would be in a unbearable pain, and you would normally want to go see a Doc.
But sometimes, a small fracture isn't known or felt, until you like jump out of a jeep, or try to kick somthing..
and then you'll feel it.

You will know if you broke it. You won't be able to walk or put weight on it.
You probably just rolled your ankle landing on someone's foot. I just rolled mine last week playing ball but I got a really unusual treatment. I went to a guy who popped it back into place and I was able to play 3 days later.

You should put ice on it if you have not to help keep the swelling down.
If you are able to stand or walk then it is just twisted/sprained.
Advil will help keep the pain level down and if you still have pain after about a week and you have not been walking on it. See a doctor.

It's probably just twisted, but if symptoms persist after two weeks, go to the nearest hospital/emergency room ASAP.

if you still have movement of the joint without major pain, then it is unlikely to be broken. hairline fractures cause little swelling, and can resemble a severe strain, so there is no absolute way of telling without an X-ray.
If it is painful but not unbearable, and if you can get around OK, just keep the ankle elevated when you can, and for the first day use cold packs - on for 20 minutes, then off for 20 - you do not want to stop the circulation or give yourself frostbite!
Next day, use warmth on the joint. If after a couple of days it is still sore, go to the Urgent Care department for an X-ray.
