Hopefully you began to ice it immediately after the injury, but if you have not you should be keeping it elevated and icing it for 15 minites at a time and staying off of it until you see a doctor. The only other thing I can suggest is to gently splint the broken toe to the toe next to it. Be sure that you do not buddy splint it so tightly that it interferes with the circulation.

Look in your Phone Book or on the Web for your Town and look up for Free Medical Help. Most bigger City's have some sort of program that will help you. If not try your local churches and tell them what happened. One way or the other you should able to get some help. Good luck to you. Praying for you!

Broken toes can't be fixed like other bones ; They have to heal in their own time.
Certainly go to A+E to get it looked at, but in the meantime keep your foot elevated at all times, and until the swelling goes down I would suggest an ice pack.

I was under the impression that a hospital cannot deny a patient treatment if it is an emergency. You can also speak with someone in social services while you are at the hospital to apply for emergency medical assistance. Good luck.

Go to the emergency room. They will give you a screening and you might be able to get medicaid to pay for treatment. I think that they are required to treat people regardless of the ability to pay.

doctors cant treat broken toes try wrapping it..put ice on it for twenty min then take it off for like 30 and then put it back on in same routine

Don't worry, you cannot legally be turned away from a hospital in the USA for lack of ability to pay for medical care.

You will be asked to fill out some forms for "MedicAid". this is a State insurance program, subsidized by the Federal Government to support health care for those who cannot afford it. Be sure to explain your circumstances when you arrive at the hospital.

For the most part, there isn't much they can do when you break a toe. Unless the bone is very misaligned, in which case they'll need to get it back into place.
If you go to the hospital, can't they bill you, and you pay it in installments? (Not sure, I live in a country that has free medical).
When I broke my big toe, they just taped it to the toe beside it to keep it still, and told me to keep weight off of it.
Mine was not hugely swollen, but I also could not put weight or pressure on it, or bend or move it at all.
Ibuprofin and ice will keep the swelling down. Ibuprofin (aka Advil, Motrin) is better than acetaminophin (Tylenol) because it reduces swelling as well as helping with the pain. Tylenol is just a painkiller.

But get to a clinic / doc / hospital if there is any way you can, even if just for reassurance.

(Edit: I see the new year has not gotten rid of the "thumbs down" trolls. Maybe it's time Y!A put a limitation on ratings?)

They cant do much for broken toes anyway. I broke two toes a few years ago and all i did was get some of that white tape and tape them together to keep them from moving.

Nothing you can do really for a broken toe. Keep off of it elevate it. Go to the ER for the pain meds and maybe some crutches. Good luck

I’ve seen many broken toes and have broken my left big toe while in the service. All the corpsman would do is give you grunt candy (600mg of Ibuprofen) 4 to 5 times a day. As long as the toe is straight and normal looking (minus swelling), they will just use popsicle sticks on the top and bottom. This keeps you from bending it. Then they will tape it to the index toe, to help hold it. Whenever we got back to base, it would be x-rayed, retaped and you got put on light duty until it healed. It should stop hurting in about 2 to 3 weeks. I think if you crushed it, that would be another story. Skip the ER and call an Orthopedic Doctor. If the swelling will not go down in 2 days then go to the ER.

Keeping your foot up will help and just take the laces out of your sneakers(no tight shoes)

there is nothing you can do for broken toes or fingers. just keep them wrapped up and try not to bump or move it.

I am sure a doctor will see you at a clinic even though you don't have any money. You need treatment. Just tell them your situation I am sure they will be understanding.

I've had several broken toes that swelled quite badly. Here is what I always did.

Ice on/Ice off in 20 min intervals.

Keep your foot/leg proped up. The higher the better.

Try not to walk on it. The less pressure the better.

Give it a few days and if it's not anybetter maybe look into something.

I'm not sure where you are at so I don't know what kind of care is available to you. Some hospitals have ER's where they have to treat you for free. Just do some research. I'd call your local hospital and explain the situation if they can't help you they can refer you to someone who can.

I hope I have been of help and I hope you get better.

Maybe you could still go to the ER, and make payments on the care you receive . . . I have that . . . it is called Access One here. PS - Go to a county hospital, and not a private one . . . the private one does NOT have to treat you.

The big toe is the only one that can be set. In the meantime I would put a couple of cups of epsom salt in a pan of hot water, and soak your foot in it until the water turns cold. (You can get this a the drug or grocery store . . . a lot of athletes use this for painful swelling.)

Then keep your foot elevated until the swelling goes down.
Take 4- 200 mg ibuprophen (this will = prescription strength) for pain and inflamation every four hours.

I would wait until the swelling goes down a bit before taping it.

As long as the toe is straight (in it's usual position) you don't have to seek medical care. Take a piece of tape and tape it to the next toe (not too tight that it shuts off the circulation). The other toe acts as a splint while the big toe heals. You may have trouble putting on any shoe that is tight - you may have to find the most loose shoe you own and wear that for several weeks. Apply ice intermittently, elevated your foot as much as possible and take some pain medication (Tylenol or Ibuprofen) on a regular basis. Expect it to take about 6 weeks to heal.

A doctor won't be able to anything about it, it will just have to heal itself anyway, so there is no reason to even goto a doctor.
