Ice and cold will work for immediate injuries, to reduce the swelling, but not so much the day or so after.. heat will help with pain, or muscle strains, good for back pain. (wheat packs, hot water bottles, baths.

yea initially cold but then alternate hot and cold. this helps to keep good blood flow among other things. if you keep it constantly hot or constantly cold the blood "build up" that causes the swelling can become infected over time causing worse pain and other complications.

It depends on the injury.
For a sprain I would get a cold pack for swelling.
For a prob in my muscle a hot pack.

If it is a muscle injury cold is the best apply to the injury for 20 minutes about 4 times a day. The only time you really want to use heat is before exercise or stretching helps Loosen the muscle. Be careful though is you have injured yourself. Hope this is helpful to you has worked for me on my back for many years.....

If its a muscle cramp, Hot compress to lessen the tightness.

If its a bruise or a sprain, Cold compress to reduce swelling.

Typically it's COLD to help keep swelling down.
Hot works for sore muscles.

hi:)
hot packs work best on muscle pains, where in in dpeth works to losen up the tight contracted muscle.

whereas ice packs are best against hemorrhages(bruises) and minor injurys from falling.

It depends on the injury. Swelling from a fresh injury instantly needs to be addressed with cold water or ice. But sometimes there is pain deep down that can only be addressed with heat (some types of chronic back pain).

Ice to reduce swelling, otherwise heat

depends on the injury.
If it is a bruise or will be a bruise, the application of a cold compress will actually aid in helping to seal up those broken blood vessels before the bruise forms really badly.
If it is a muscle that has been over worked, then it is really best to alternate 10-15 minutes of heat and then cold to help with healing.

Ice helps relieve inflammation in an injury- this also helps relieve some of the pain. However, heat makes sore muscles and joints feel better. So, if there's swelling, ice is better. If there's just pain, heat may feel better. Both are good ways to relieve pain- but be careful not to leave either on too long, or you could hurt yourself!

It really depends on the injury. For example, it makes no sense to put a hot pad on a burn. In the training room, we have athletes that come in with swollen ankles, so we have them put their foot in the ice bucket to reduce blood flow to the injury. However, we use hot pad or warm water tub to increase blood flow to elevate tissue oxygenation for some injuries like bruises to heal faster. Hope this helps! :)

Depends on the injury.

Cold is good for a number of reasons. Reduces swelling, numbs the area. It's good for most joint injuries.

Heat tends to be better for mucsular injuries, but there are always exceptions to the rule.

Best to get advice from a doctor.
