Have you got RSI (Repetetive Strain Injury)? Have you been using the computer/mouse for ages???

Repetitive strain injury (RSI), also called repetitive stress injury, is a loose group of conditions from overuse of the computer, guitar, knife or similar motion or tool. It is an occupational overuse syndrome affecting muscles, tendons and nerves in the arms and upper back; hence it is also known as work related upper limb disorder or WRULD. The medically accepted condition in which it occurs is when muscles in these areas are kept tense for very long periods of time, due to poor posture and/or repetitive motions.

It is most common among assembly line and computer workers. Good posture, ergonomics and limiting time in stressing working conditions can help prevent or halt the progress of the disorder. Stretches, strengthening exercises, massages and biofeedback training to reduce neck and shoulder muscle tension can help heal existing disorders.

Is there any discernible swelling with the pain? You might have a repetitive stress injury caused by overuse. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome would be an example.

If you have swelling (inflammation) there is generally pain associated. If the wrist is at waist level or lower you may feel throbbing.

Injury to a ligament is called a SPRAIN.

Injury to a muscle is called a STRAIN.

In either case, the very first thing you should do is:

R.I.C.E.

REST-Stop all activities which cause pain to the injured area.

ICE-Apply icing to the area several times a day, but never for more than 10-15 minutes at a time. Protect the skin.

COMPRESSION-Wrap the injured area to reduce swelling.

ELEVATION: Keep the injured area as close to the level of the heart as is conveniently possible.

The Ice and Compression (Cold compression therapy} will stop the pain and swelling while the injury starts to heal itself. Controlling the swelling and inflammation is critical to the healing process and the icing further restricts fluid leaking into the injured area as well as controlling pain.

Elevation is best achieved by raising the wrist above waist level to keep gravity from allowing the fluid (serum) to pool in the wrist. Ice and compression also help prevent this.

The extreme pain and stiffness is worse the first 2 days, then it should gradually subside. Stopping the swelling (inflammation) is key to a quicker recovery.

If R.I.C.E is followed and there is not gradual improvement by the third day, or pain increases, or you can't use the wrist without pain, see an orthopedic MD to rule out fracture or complete separation of the tendon or muscle.

Good Luck
