To kill germs, gargle with warm water, salt, and baking soda. To ease the pain take a tsp. of honey mixed with a little lemon juice and a dash of Tabasco sauce. Will burn for a minute then end the pain.

Try a Mouthwash or if you don't have any, try mixing a tablespoon of salt into 1 glass of warm water then gargle it...it may taste terrible as hell but I guarantee you it will kill the bacteria.

Seriously ignore all these other answers...
This ALWAYS works- Gargle with cayenne pepper and warm water every 20min until it doesn't hurt anymore. It isn't hot like you would think. It numbs the pain and kills the infection.

1 Drink warm drinks and soup. This will ease the pain, and give you fluid and some nourishment.2 Drink a glass of mint tea with honey. This works great.3 Eat cold foods, but avoid anything to sweet. Excess sugar will irritate the throat.4 Take a hot shower. The steam vapors help clear your sinuses, which usually is the cause of a sore throat.5 Get a bottle of throat spray, such as Chloraseptic, and spray liberally in the back of your throat. It will numb your throat and kill any bacteria.6 Gargle with lukewarm salty water at least 3 to 4 times a day. The salt should be dissolved in the water. Don't go overboard on the salt so as to cause more irritation—there should just be enough to help clear any excess mucus in the back of your throat.7 Cut a lemon in half, skewer it, and roast over a stove fire until the skin is golden-brown. Squeeze out the juice and mix in 1 tablespoon of honey. Stir and drink.8 Mix Ginger and lemon juice. Run down the throat without swallowing. The Ginger will cling to the sides of the throat to provide temporary relief and a barrier to prevent damage from coughing. The acidic lemon juice will help with removal of mucus.9 Swallow a spoonful of honey.10 Mix a tablespoon of salt in a cup of warm water and gargle.
TIPS
1. Stay away from eating hard foods, like meat, chicken and toast. It will hurt going down.
2.If you eat something, and it hurts going down, stop eating it.
3.Drinking apple juice will relieve the pain (but only while drinking it). It also provides vitamin C which helps the body fight sickness.
4.Cooking fresh chicken soup is best, but a box of Lipton Chicken Soup with Noodles is great, fast and easy.
5.Cough drops/lozenges will soothe your throat, but won't get rid of it completely.
6.As always, sleep will also help relieve pain.
7.Try to stay away from milk. All it does is clog up your throat and when you need to cough it hurts like crazy and all the milk is turned into mucus
WARNINGS
1.Most sore throats, while annoying, are generally common. However, prolonged or repetitive sore throats can be a sign of a serious problem. If you have a painful sore throat and it does not get better in a few days, go see a doctor. He will perform a throat culture, which involves briefly swabbing the back of your throat to check for signs of strep.
2.If you also have a stiff neck with the sore throat, do not wait. Get medical help.

Warm water with salt....a lot of salt! Gargle with it and spit it out. Make sure you gargle well...make sure it gets all over your throat. It will feel soooooo much better. That's what my mom and my doctor told me to do and it works everytime. Also throat numbing spray helps...it disinfects and numbs the pain while you're healing. Feel better soon. =)

Warm salt water gargles, a quality cough drop to sooth the throat. If it lasts more than three days, go see your doctor for possible strep, or pharyngitis.

Zinc lozenges, tea, gargling with salt water, honey, try not to scream (lol), and any (legal) throat-numbing fluid that you cloud gargle with (these usually need a perscription so you might want to see your doctor if all of the other methods do not work)

keep drinking warm fluids like soup and even hot chocolate =), stay away from the cold stuff including cold drinks because it'll aggravate the soreness. (if you want more variety then go for stuff that wil go down smoothly like pudding, jello or applesauce) this is just what you should do because other than these and medicine, theres not much else you can do except wait it out. plus, once you're done with so and so days of medicine, if you have even a tingle in your throat leftover, take cough drops to make sure it doesn't come back.

You need to gargle a glass or salty warm water ( i know it's yuk)
if it's itchy, have a tablespoon of hunny right before you sleep (and maybe keep it by your bedside)
otherthan that, stay away from really cold drinks.
