Alcohol impairs judgement when present in sufficient quantities.

Sexual exposures account for about 15 percent of cases of hepatitis C. Although the risk for transmitting Hcv infection through sexual intercourse is low, sex is a common behavior in the general population, a substantial proportion of the adult population has had unprotected sex with multiple partners, and there are a large number of persons with Hcv infection.

While other types of exposures are more likely to transmit Hcv (e.g., transfusion from an infected donor), they account for a smaller proportion of infections because of the relatively small proportion of the population in whom these exposures have occurred.

Therefore, alcohol impaired judgement can lead to a, lets say, less stringent attitude about sexual encounters?

This is a possible scenario where alcohol and Hepatitis C can cross-paths.

EDIT: To the poster (SpringRose) who questioned my 15% transmission rate>> See the website noted below. BTW: its a CDC website - pretty good authority I think. See the 3rd paragraph below Figure 2.

I don't think they are related but both effect the liver. If you have hepC then you should NOT drink alcohol.

They are only related in that they both cause severe liver damage.

quick anwser

Drinking alcohol with a hepatic liver is like
Throwing gasoline on a fire

adding on..I'm with SpringRose on the sexual transmission
it is NOT 15% and the CDC is NOT always right

I've had Hcv since '94..I studied about this virus and the medicine for a very long time. I devote my life to helping others. I am now Hcv Free

Hepatitis C is a blood disease which effects the liver. Everything you put into your body is filtered through the liver. Alcohol is very difficult for the liver to process and causes damage to the liver when abused. the later stages of Hep C include cirrhosis of the liver which turns into cancer of the liver, both of these can be got by being a heavy drinker without the bonus of Hep.

They are related in the fact that they both cause damage to the liver. If you are living with Hep C and drink alcohol, it further damages the liver than it would with just the Hep C alone. And just a note to the above poster: Hep C is passed ONLY from blood to blood contact. The only way to transmit Hep C sexually is if blood is involved. You need to re-check your percentage rates because they are wrong. 15% is not the correct number. It is way too high. It is closer to 2-3%. Like I said, it is passed only through blood to blood contact, so blood would have to be involved for it to be contracted through sex.
