Is MRSA a notifiable condition?
Several of my colleagues and I may have been exposed to someone suffering from MRSA today. Our work is trying to keep it quiet within the department.

My question is: Is MRSA a notifiable condition? None of us are happy about this and are quite worried - are we required to notify Environmental Health or anyone?

We have found out that this has not been the first case of MRSA at our place of work.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I work in a school and live in England. I'm not a nurse.

Thanks for your advice so far!

the best thing to do is keep your work area clean and wash your hands good MRSA can spread fast but you have to keep clean as long as he or she is taking medicine for it they will be okay and you will be okay but just wash and keep everything cleaned and make sure to wash your clothes every night

No, it is not reportable. MRSA is actually getting quite common especially if you work in a hospital or nursing home or you have a family member that is frequently hospitalized or in a nursing home. Lots of people are colonized with MRSA and probably don't even know it and health care workers defintiely are.

What kind of department are you in?

My answer would be yes, and no.

Direct support staff; orderlies, nurse, doctors; family and acquaintances should know of the condition, and the sufferer should be isolated, so that special precautions (gowning, face masks/shields, and gloves for even causal contact) can be taken with the sufferer.
HIPPA implies that this is on a need-to-know basis. It is not appropriate for everybody to know of the sufferer's condition; only those who come into contact with him or her.
If you are in a nursing department, as I suspect you are, this is a question you should direct towards your infection control nurse. If you are not, I would suggest that you contact your local public health department about this.

IF you come into BODILY contact with this person, it should be reported.

I know someone who caught MRSA while in the hospital and the doctors didn't even tell THEM. ( found out through G.P notes) Then when nurse was taking a nose swab person asked why ( knowing they were testing for MRSA) and was told because you have been in hospital before just procedure. As if. DISGRACE.

I am not sure where you are or in what state but YES the cdc is to be notified. this is a bacteria that is getting way out of control. If it is not reported where does it end. There are several children in Austin Texas that have been diagnosed with this because it was caught in the schools, locker rooms and such. So In Tx we are required to contact the health dept and the cdc will then in turn be contacted. This isn't a casual bacteria we are talking about here.

The simple and correct answer is no MRSA is not notifiable. Within hospitals in the UK MRSA only needs to be reported if it enters the blood stream and causes septicaemia, which is fortunately very rare.
MRSA is becoming more and more common and causes a lot of unnecessary worry. MRSA is contagious (it can be spread by skin to skin contact) but this can be prevented by thorough hand washing with hot water and soap (the alcohol gel used in hospitals is not as effective as soap and water for killing MRSA - but is good at keeping other germs under control)
So if you fear that you have been exposed, have a good shower and wash your clothes and that should be enough.

MRSA only really causes problems when it infects a wound or as mentioned previously gets into the blood stream.

I hope this offers you some reassurance.
