http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/groupbstrep.
We would like to bring to the goverments attention that we lost our healthy baby to the 'Group b strep virus' and after the babys death we were informed by the hospital that there is minumal medical knowledge on the virus, due to little or no research being done due to the apparent lack of funding while expectant mums not being warned and or advised of this deadly virus, during and after pregnancy resulting in some unfortunate couples loosing their babys while doctors look on being unable to offer any treatment.? In the hope that other babys would not die needlessly.

I have signed, but simply do not trust ANY government 'petition'. It is a sad and simple fact of life that your petition will not attract as many signatures as contentious issues such as 'road charges by the mile' which attracted millions of names.

They are STILL going to implement this.

The government sends you a nice e-mail thanking you for your 'input' and then proceeds to ride rough shod all over you anyway.

They take the piss and they do not care. We should NEVER have in our hospitals, in this day and age ANY case of what has sadly happened to your baby.

Sorry. I am disillusioned and disappointed.

I would but my experiance show the government does not take any notice. They would rather we were killed off. I'm sorry about your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. Not enough is being done to inform pregnant women about this. When I was pregnant with my 2nd baby I read an article about strep B and just happened to ask a nurse about it at my 20 week scan and she said "Don't worry about it dear" I had no tests for it (that I know of) and I didn't worry as I didn't think it was a big thing. My baby was fine but I still think about the way I was so naive about it.
PS. I signed the petition

My heart goes out to you. We have signed petition,as my niece lost two babies through this. Like you, she is now reaching out to people to bring attention to the problem. It really needs to be brought to attention of everyone! There should be more research into this. It is an important issue, and should not be ignored. Good luck

There's actually quite alot known about early onset GBS. Late Onset (starting later than the first week) is still not well understood, and to date there is no "real" prevention.

Different countries have different protocols and the UK is not as reactionary as the US. Here's some resources for you. The GBSS site is an excellent source of information and you might want to co-ordinate with them for change with regard to GBS infections.

CDC (USA) http://www.cdc.gov/groupbstrep/

GBSS (UK) http://www.gbss.org.uk/

So sorry to hear about your loss. A college professor of mine also lost a newborn to Strep B.

FYI - Streptococcus type B is a bacteria, and as someone else mentioned, here in the US a vaginal swab is done around 28 weeks gestation to test for it. I was positive, but they hadn't called me so I thought it was negative. I read an article in Parenting magazine about it and called to check and the office said, "You were positive, we called you and called in a prescription for antibiotics." Nope, no call. After that, I never trust the "If we don't call, it's negative."
I took the antibiotics and it cleared. They often re-check immediately after birth to see if the newborn needs antibiotics as well.

I hope your efforts can at least help raise awareness about this silent killer.

Best regards.

It is customary that a pregnant women be tested for Strep B (vaginal swab) at 28 weeks gestation. If this was not done, or becomes positive, it is usually customary for the mother to be treated during delivery and post delivery with antibiotics. The infant should or is customarily treated as well.

I sincerely hate to hear of your loss, and my thoughts are with you and your family.

My condolences for your loss.

However neonatal infection with streptococcal bacteria has been well known and documented for many years. If the bacteria is picked up on a high vaginal swab in pregnancy it is treated with penicillin to which it has always remained sensitive.

If any neonate is thought to be unwell it should immediately be subjected to an infection screen. this should quickly confirm infection and again treatment can be initiated.

I had the strep B virus while pregnant and was treated with antibiotics-how ever at 2 weeks my son was diagnosed with it and also treated. He is fine >they do know about it and it can be treated if caught early enough.I'm trully sorry for your loss.
