Can infections spread if the infected person touches an object, and then i touch the object?
can it live on inanimate objects?
if i touched the object he touched, and then i touched my pens, will my pens be infected now too? that means i have to disinfect everything. how long do bacteria and infections live on inanimate objects?

Hi there,
the answer is yes, but not to all vruses or infections.
For instance some bacteria and viruses are spread by droplet infection, when someone coughs sneezes or is sick.
Other bacteria can live on briefly or be dormant on an inanimate object..ie work surfaces.
You haven't mentioned a particular infection.
For Impetigo which is a skin infection, it is recommended that the person use seperate towels to reduce cross infection.
The life span of bacterias and viruses vary, some a matter of minutes to much longer.
So if you could tell us what infection this person had, it would help

Are you talking about HIV? Or just your avergae bacteria? Objects that arnt orgainic, like pens cant hold on to bacteria very well and theyd die quickly as theres nothing to feed on.

If live bacteria enters the body through an open wound or if you are in the habbit of sucking your pens or finger it is more likely you will contact infection.

Best tip get some anti-Bac hand wash, hand gel and even hand wipes.

If it is a bacterial infection then the answer is yes.

Viral infections are airbourne and don't need human contact

YES indeed.
So be vigilant and wash items well because MRSA lives on surfaces.

Viruses and bacteria don't do well on inanimate objects, particularly metal ones. They survive because they are often deposited along with a nice, sustaining goo. Food residues dry on the outside and have a wholesome, moist interior to allow bacteria to survive.

CLEAN skin is pretty dry and supports few microbes so transfers very little. It is also almost impossible for bacteria to penetrate intact skin. Snot, spit and other bodily fluids give the bacteria a chance to survive. Over zealous washing of skin can damage the skin's barrier properties and this will be obvious where there is chapping or open cuts or sores.

Viruses rely on being inhaled or swallowed to get close to live, thin skin and enter the body so door knobs and everyday objects are not good for them. Unfortunately they do not die when dried so coughs and sneezes may dry out quickly but the virus's live on.

Except in hospitals and where poo is the contaminant disinfection is overkill. Cleaning is not wasted effort.
