The preop itself is just for blood work (all kinds of blood work), EKG, anesthesia interview in which they will discuss how you will be put to sleep, if you have any allergies, if you have any questions about your surgery, a complete medical history will be taken, they will check heart, lungs, and vital signs, family history, etc., and so forth. The preop interview took about 45 minutes to an hour.
The Echocardiogram, catherization, (sometimes pulmonary function tests), stress tests, chest x-rays, sometimes TEE (transesophageal echo), etc., are all done before the preop, that is how I found out I needed open heart surgery.
