orangecrush	I myself suffered a stroke 3 years ago and still notice when I'm tired that I have more problems being understood or if I get excited and try to respond too quickly. All I can tell you is work on patience and understanding. Stroke effects all victims differently. I prefer communicating through my computer to this day because even though people tell me they understand me, I feel I'm not being clear enough. RN	give him love and support. A stroke is very hard on a man who was previously articulate. He knows that he cant get his words out and that they often do not make sense, dont point it out. Give him time to say what he has to say, dont finish his sentences for him it won't help him. Be patient. Some Stroke patient recover completely, some have mild residuals, some never recover. another_guy_named_steve	He will get better. I had a mild stroke when I was 36, survived, and recovered. Whet he needs to do as soon as possible is get into a GOOD speech therapy program. He'll also need physical therapy. Ask around, ask your doctor, ask SEVERAL doctors. Don't ask doctors who all work at the same hospital, the hospital may have a program they "funnel" patients to, and it may not be the best one. If there is an association of therapists in your state, ask them. But do it quickly, the longer he goes without rehab the harder it will be when he starts. Don't expect your father to be exactly the same as he was before the stroke -- they may not be able to get him back to where he was before, but they can teach him different ways to form words and do things that will be CLOSE to what he used to do. But if it's not exactly the way it was, just understand. And therapy is going to be rough... when I went through mine, I thought I was in the Kentucky Derby. huh?	It depends on the severity and location of the stroke, BUT with rehabilitation, things can improve. BE SURE that he is involved in some sort of rehab. The human brain is capable of retraining itself, maybe not 100%, but it is possible. Tell him to keep trying. BUT rehab in the first 3 months is crucial. He is there. Don't be discouraged. Pray.
