Unfortunately it can be hereditary...maybe no one else in your family knows that they have it, but they do. You might want to talk to a nutritionist and keep a diary of what you are eating. Maybe he/she can tweak that for you. Good luck!

It could very well be that your body is predisposed to a higher cholesterol than average.
I have family members who are genetically predisposed to having high cholesterol. For years, they were using various cholesterol medications, but now they manage it very well without medication. In addition to exercise and healthy diet, here are the two distinctives:
1. Daily eat *some* food which is high in mono/poly-unsaturated fats (these unsaturated fats raise the HDL)
2. Daily drink the "five greens". This is a drink composed of juiced cucumber, Celery, Bitter Melon, bell pepper, and green apple. This is a high-fiber drink with many health benefits. (For our purposes it lowers the LDL) If you google this combination of veggies, you'll find many variations on it, but those five are the foundation.
I would be lying if I said the drink tastes great, but you can add other things to fix the taste to your palate. For instance, some people add honey to sweeten it.

Triglycerides come from Carbohydrates, not fat. Cut out all carbohydrates except those from non starchy vegetables. Your Triglycerides will fall, your CHD will improve, and you will not need any drugs for Type II diabetes. Watch the fruit and eliminate the grains.
Increase in HDL comes from saturated and mono saturated fat. Increase in LDL comes from trans-fats and vegetable oils.
VLDL is a dangerous form of cholesterol that your body makes when you eliminate all dietary cholesterol. Eat your eggs every day.
Follow this advise and you will CURE your diabetes, lose weight, eliminate your BP meds, live longer.
You can follow the advice others will give, but that is probably what you have been doing. Do you know anyone who eats a low fat diet who has lowered their numbers? Yes, you can lower them temporarily, but once your body figures out what you are doing, it just makes more. Cholesterol is that important to life.
Never take drugs to lower your cholesterol as artificially lowered blood levels have NEVER been shown to benefit CHD. Every cholesterol drug ad has a disclaimer stating just that. Look up any ad, you will find it. Worse yet, you might die sooner from cancer, stroke, infection. Or trigger ALS, Alzheimer's, or dementia, ED. Such a deal.

When wishing to lower "High Cholesterol" a nutritionist is the best person to contact after a review with a physician.
Also, always remember that there is good cholesterol known as "HDL Cholesterol" and bad cholesterol known as "LDL Cholesterol". The normal level of HDL cholesterol in a person should be at or above 40 mg/dL and a normal level of LDL cholesterol is considered at or below 140 mg/dL.
Some natural ways to lower your Total Cholesterol level while maintaining the HDL level are as following:
- Aerobic exercise. Walking, jogging or bike riding each day for about 30-40 minutes.
- Lose weight. Obesity results not only in increased LDL cholesterol, but also in reduced HDL cholesterol.
- Stop smoking. If you smoke, giving up tobacco will result in an increase in HDL levels.
- Cut out the trans fatty acids. Anything in which the nutrition label reads "partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. They simply just increase your LDL cholesterol and decrease HDL cholesterol.
- Increase the monounsaturated fats in your diet. Monounsaturated fats such as canola oil, Avocado oil, or olive oil and in the fats found in peanut butter can increase HDL cholesterol levels without increasing the total cholesterol.
- Add soluble Fiber to your diet. Soluble fibers are found in oats, fruits, vegetables, and legumes, and result in both a reduction in LDL cholesterol and an increase HDL cholesterol.
- Cranberry juice has been shown to increase HDL levels. Fish and other foods containing omega-3 fatty acids can also increase HDL levels. In postmenopausal women (but not, apparently, in men or pre-menopausal women) Calcium supplementation can increase HDL levels.
- Discuss with your family doctor about " Statins " as for medication and Niacin (only the Nicotinic Acid form) a form of B vitamins.
