tommo	Have done it.Am an EMT,it was a drug over dose patient had lost consciousness whilst talking to control.We were given OK to gain access as police where travelling but we would arrive first, On arrival house full of smoke,patient on floor needle still in arm,resps four a minute(not good) drag 'ed him out,treated him got him to hospital alive.Turned out the house wasn't on fire,hed set light to a phone directory which was in the same room and had all burned away so no flame but lots of thick smoke in the room,we thought the house was on fire! Church Lady	Actually, no one should do that. I used to be a firefighter and an EMT. We are taught to watch our own behind first. If you get hurt you can't help the other person and if you get hurt the firemen then have two people to rescue instead of just one. Also, people think they are helping when they break out windows and open doors at a fire but the reality is that they are just giving the fire more oxygen and making it worse. Firemen don't break windows until they have their water supply all hooked up and ready to go. What ever window or door you open the fire will head towards the source of oxygen. If the fire is at the front of the house and you open a door at the back of the house the fire with FLY, RACE, RUN and ROLL all the way through the house to get to the oxygen. Firefighters receive a lot of training so that they know exactly what to do, where to do it and how to do it. Do you all remember the Great White concert where the club caught on fire and all of those people died? If you watch the video you can tell the exact moment that some one opened the door at the other end of the club because the fire shot right for that opened door. If some one had been there who knew what they were doing they would have broken out all of the windows and opened all of the doors at the back of the club....that way the fire would not have been starved for oxygen and would have stayed contained to the back part of the club. Fireant	Actually, it's not a good idea to go into a burning building - even if someone was in there. You risk loosing 2 lives instead of just the person that is already in there. Call the fire department. Most of the time they will get to the scene quick enough. The chances of you also being overcome by smoke and fumes is very high. Having to look for 2 people in separate areas would put fire personnel more at risk too. As a firefighter, if I have to go into the building for a person, I much rather it only be one. geishagirl61	I think it would all depend on the situation; however, I like to think that I would save another life if need be. If I knew someone was in the house and I could get myself in and out without causing harm to myself or the other person than I would go in.......If I didn't know if there was someone in there then I would definatly leave that up to the professionals. geoffhillyer	I'd be much more likely to be on the blower to the firefighters. I'd be hopeful that they wouldn't take too long to get to the building and they would have the equipment to rescue someone much more effectively. That said, if it was someone I really cared about, if there was any chance I could get to them without putting myself in extreme danger, I'd think about it. stokies	well reading the question automatically makes me think of my own safety,i wouldnt know how to react if it was strangers,but i suppose Adrenalin would kick in,and i'd do my very best to save a life,if it were my children then i dont need to think twice,i know that i would definately put my own life at risk to save theirs.
