I would say emotional instability. Some people have a weird way of dealing with the pressures of life. Some would say its to bring attention to themselves because they feel deprived of love.

They feel a lot of emotional pain, which they need a release from. They may be unable to express their feelings in other ways. It basically a physical form of their inner pain.

It's not always about attention as some ignorant people may suggest. Some people feel numb on the inside and need to dfeel something even pain. Some people feel so bad on the inside and can't find a way to feel better so when they cut themselves it sort of drawes out the pain and seeing the blood and feeling pain makes what they feel on the inside more real.

a common reason for cutting is to "feel." people become so numbed by their emotional pain they need something to feel alive. also, externalizing their emotional pain makes it real. there's more reaons, some people compulsively pull out their hair and so on...

It happens when the pain you're feeling on the inside is worse than on the outside and you want to equal it out. Also one might hurt if one is vampiric or masochistic. It mostly happens if you don't have anyone to turn to b/c you don't want to tell anyone or no one will listen. It's about the lowest you can go b/4 you're suicidal. Usually they have problems with life, home life, love life, a death, or just in general. NOT ONLY EMO KIDS TO THE DUMB A** THAT SAID IT! I'm emo. Pain really sucks...take my word.

It's not for the attention. People do self-harm because of self-hatred. They lack the ability to deal with the hurt in their lives, and then they try to hide what they've done to themselves because they are ashamed of what they've done.

they feel like the only way to get rid of pain is to put pain on theirselves. or, they think it will rid them from anything "bad." usually people who do this have high pshycological problems or low self-esteem. something might be happening at home, divorce, boyfriend/girlfrind, abuse, etc.

for the attention mostly. Some people want people to have pity for them. Lot of it is selfishness, wanting attention from Mom and Dad.

when self harming there is always a release after the blood...makes people calm down and relax...in a world when u cannot control much u can controll this like anorexia...some do it for attention these are the people who do it and show it off others do it because its a way to get to the release u get after the blood runs.
sometimes you cant find the words to exspress how angry u r or there is no one around who will listen.
i guess if it means anythin specific it shows how much someone is hurting inside..things that they have bottled up. things they feel they cant tell anyone about.
usually its people who bottle things up that self harm

To many, self harm is a way to release the pain. The look at this way, as the blood is coming out of their wounds, the pain is coming out, too. But also, for many, self harm is a way to call out. Its their last way of telling the world "Hey, I'm hurting. I want help." Its usually their way of saying it without actually saying it. And never let a person tell you that someone who self harms is "Just looking for attention and never going to do anything more." That is just not true.

Okey dokey - this is something I know lots about as I am a long term self harmer who has only recently (2 years ago) stopped, also a couple of my best friends are heavily into self harm.
The reason why I began to self harm was as a form of atonement for something I did when I was 17. It was nothing really significant to anyone else but to me what I had done was the end of everything good in my life and the beginning of a life of utter misery and degradation. I took up smoking, excessive drinking and cutting myself as a form of punishment for what I had done.
Even after I had got over the problem I had (it took 5 years) I continued to self harm as it is exceptionally fun and addictive. A few really deep bleeding wounds is a feeling far better than any orgasm I have ever felt, and lasts far longer.
I gave up self harm because I enjoyed it too much and I don't feel I deserve happiness like that, this is also why I gave up on alcohol and have become celebate. It's not a self-esteem issue, I fully realise my potential and what I should and should not do. The more I enjoy something the more I come to rely upon it and the less balanced I become as a person and as such the less mentally stable I become.
As for why my friends self harm. Firstly one self harms as a symptom of depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Another self-harms as a kind of sexual perversion in that she only enjoys physical sex with pain, it's a sort of s&m thing. And my other friend who self-harms has lots of issues and it is hard to pin down one exact cause - she's pretty disturbed in some respects.
I hope the human feak-show that is my life has helped you understand self-harm, and self-harm disorder a bit more. It certainly has been a painful thing for me to relate and has brought back a lot of bad memories.

Sometimes it's a way of releasing inner pain with outter pain. It sort of takes the edge off the pain someone might feel inside from depression for instance, or it may help distract from thoughts of a traumatic experience.

yeah - depressed people and angry people. If they are not able to turn their stuff outwards such as crying or therapy, or god forbid, being mean to people. they turn it on themselves because it helps alleviate the psychological pain. Physical pain is easier to deal with because it makes sense. and it's also known. ya know, better the devil you know than the one you don't ? like that.

It is a way of blocking emotional pain by temporarily exchanging it for physical pain which is a lot easier for some to handle. Getting to the root of the emotional pain usually begins the end of the self-inflicted physical pain.

I disagree with you who say they do it for attention. Most of those who do it are very secretive and try to hide the fact that they do it, almost like an addict doing drugs would do. I've experianced a cutter first-hand, and she would just systematically slash parts of her leg that nobody would see. I don't think the method of self-harm has little to do with but more so the ammount of pain it brings, and how easy it is to do to one's self.
Sometimes it can be done as a release, or as a "suicidal gesture" in which case it IS usually a last cry for help or attention.
Sometimes all a person knows is pain. And I agree with kitty that: it is usually a form of release for them when they are having extreme anxiety, depression or other mental problems.
