I have a son that does this and I never get after him for doing this, for one, it will only make it worse. It is a nervous "habit" that is formed at a young age. Hopefully he will grow out of it as I did (although I wanted pretty nails and most guys I know don't care). The problem with bitting nails is that you get them so short that the skin rips away from the skin causing an opening....submitting yourself to bacteria which can be harmful for you (not to mention the pain factor). Otherwise, bite away...there are worse habits for sure!

You could get full and not eat dinner! I believe it's just a way to distract your self from others, helping you block out what ever they have to say to you. Could be considered disrespectful in some cultures.

Because how you toch things all day, germs accumulate underneath your nail. Sometimes you can actually see dirt under your nails. So it's mainly for health reasons.

I do it, I think it's psychological, I find myself doing it involuntarily and especially when I'm nervous. It is also just gross, I have to force myself to stop.

It might leave you more prone to fungal infections of the nails, but it definitely makes you look very insecure when you walk around gnawing on your fingernails. And they look horrible too. There's the old wives tale that if you swallow them they can cause appendicitis or some crap, and you might catch some parasite from underneath the old claws. All in all, it's just a nasty habit.

Because you use your hands more than any other part of your body, therefore germs and germs are picked up and collected up under the nails. Thats why it is important to always keep your hands washed as much as humanly possible.

Your fingernails have a couple of big jobs to do. They protect your fingertips and make it easier for you to pick up tiny things, like loose threads. They also come in handy when you have an itch that needs scratching.
But when you bite your nails, your nails aren't there to do those things. And by biting them, you are breaking the skin and maybe bringing germs into these openings in your skin. In fact, some people bite their nails and cuticles down so far, they bleed! When germs invade, you can get an infection.

It spreads germs. Many children devolp warts on their fingers because they bite their fingernails. Also, all of the dirt and bacteria that gets trapped under your nails is going in your mouth.

Fingernails do not digest in you GI system and often lodge in the appendix, causing appendicitis. Not a great idea.

Did you know that our skin is our largest organ? Or that our hair and nails are actually modified types of skin?severe nail biting can signal excessive anxiety.just by looking at their teeth. The lower four front teeth are usually uniformly worn along the edges but only the upper two front teeth show wear. The damage caused by this habit is twofold. Excessive bending of the tooth (yes teeth bend) causes microcracks in the enamel. These microcracks absorb stain, causing discolored teeth and over time the teeth wear and begin to chip.

Pretty simple actually. My sister used to bite her nails, until she had to see the Dr. cuz she had worms coming out of her butt! The Dr. said it was due to her swallowing the eggs that were in the dirt under her nails. She had really bad tummy cramps for a week before hand cuz they were all hatching in there and stuff. After she pooped them out she felt MUCH better. If you like worms though, then go ahead.

it tears them, causing them to split and look very unattractive.
Too bad women don't wear gloves anymore to protect them. I thought that was a cool look.
Also, biting your nails can cause you to bite or tear into the quick, causing pain and infection.

the first is for reasons of hygene. You may have touched something, dirt or who knows what, and these bacteria and other baddies are under the nail and will be eaten if you bite the nail.
Secondly, it's a nervous habit, and people want their children to not appear nervous, even though new situations and people often make kids nervous.
Thirdly, in order not to spread germs around. Fingers in mouth and then on doorknob or what have you will spread the germs that you have to everyone.
