The actual piercing of the tongue is not painful in itself because the tongue is a muscle with striations, the needle slips between them just like pushing a needle through a piece of fabric. However the tongue does swell and become tender afterwards, sometimes quite dramatically, that's why it's usual to pierce the tongue first with a longer barbell, which is replaced for the proper size when the swelling goes down (usually 8-10 days). The further back from the tip of the tongue the piercing is done, the more swelling there usually is. Some people have a dimple on the front of the tongue this is usually the ideal place to do the piercing.
Tongue piercing is not for the faint of heart. You won’t be able to eat solid foods, or talk properly for several days; this can sometimes lead to a short period of depression. If you can get through the initial first three or so days, it s all downhill. Timing is an important factor if you decide to go through this with this. If you work a job, which requires you to talk a lot, you may want to speak to your employer regarding a couple of days off or if your planning a big weekend, its best to get the piercing done afterwards. Once your new pet settles down, you will kick yourself for not getting it done earlier!
JEWELLERY
The most common form of jewellery in tongue piercing is a barbell. They are available in surgical steel, gold-plated surgical steel and coloured plastic. The initial piercing must have a longer barbell with larger balls but once it's healed you can wear a barbell with smaller balls. Labret studs and tongue retainers may appeal to those who need to hide their piercing. They have a flat top, which makes them less visible, and totally invisible if they are painted with flesh coloured nail polish.
INVISIBLE TONGUE PIERCING
Many people wish to get their tongues pierced but feel they are prevented by the negative reactions they may get from their employers or peers. Having your tongue pierced by a barbell painted with flesh coloured nail polish can solve this, as this is less likely to be seen. Onetribe has also found a jewellry company who manufactures barbells with a flesh color acrylic ball. For extra precaution after it's healed, you can wear a labret stud or a clear acrylic tongue retainer. Once it's healed you can alternatively change the jewellery yourself.
HEALING
Tongue piercing usually takes between 10-14 days to fully heal. It is almost impossible to develop an infection because your saliva contains enzymes: "Ptyalin" and Lingual antimicrobial Peptide (LAP) which are anti bacterial. Overuses of Astringent mouthwashes neutralise these enzymes which may cause the tongue to go green or brown. If this occurs, reduce the amount of Mouthwash you use.
You will experience swelling on the first day, but the worst swelling will be from 2-5 days after the piercing, during which time your tongue will be very uncoordinated and you may find it very hard to talk. The only foods you will be able to eat during the first 3-5 days should be mashed up. We suggest yogurts, juices and shakes. You may also consider taking vitamin supplements to boost your immune system during the healing phase. Baby food rocks! Just don’t forget your bibs and please no sucking on thumbs in public!
You must be very careful once you start eating solid food that you don’t bite the initial longer barbell, once you change over to the shorter one the chances of this will decrease. However, even then there is a chance of biting the barbell and splitting or chipping a tooth. Eventually you will unconsciously alter the way you eat so this doesn’t happen.
During the healing process you may experience one or several of the following symptoms. Don’t be alarmed they will all stop once the piercing is healed. Your salivary glands will overproduce saliva and this will cause you to constantly swallow, this may last for up to 5 days during which the salivary glands (under the chin) can become swollen. The tastebuds on the end of your tongue may become tender and you might experience a tingling or burning sensation. You may experience tenderness where the balls on the barbell make a depression on the palate of your mouth and on the lower inside gum of your mouth. You may see a white fluid being excreted by the wound, don't be alarmed is just dead white blood cells it's a normal part of the healing process, all wounds heal by secreting plasma which forms a scab, but because of the saliva in the mouth, a scab can't form.
After 3-5 days, the swelling will reduce, and between 7-10 days after the piercing, you will have to insert the shorter barbell. We can do it for you or you can do it yourself. Usually the shorter barbell can be inserted after 8-10 days, although some people's tongue may heal quicker. The amount of swelling depends on how long your tongue is (longer tongues swell more), where the piercing is placed (the further back from the tip, the more swelling) and how well you follow the aftercare instructions.
JEWELLERY OPTIONS
After the piercing is healed, there are many different jewellry options. There are small and large balls available in surgical steel, gemstone, coloured Acrylic, glow in the dark UV, glitter, Gold-plated Surgical steel and solid 9ct and 14ct gold. These balls are sold separately but are much cheaper than having to purchase a complete barbell.

Why any "normal" human being would do this, or want this done to their bodies, is beyond my understanding. Mutilation is not on my list of "normal behaviors". If it's attention that you're seeking, do something constructive, like volunteering at a local homeless shelter, nursing home,or hospital. Better yet,go to college and earn a degree. That will raise your self-esteem, and you will become a self-confident,contributing member of our society.

I used a nipple clamps (purchased at naughty store) to first put pressure on and harden my nipples. Then I burnt a fat sewing needle and soaked it in alcohol. After doing so, I slowly pushed the needle thru my nipple. After wards, while the needle was still in, I quadruple threaded the needle with thick fishing line. I then pulled the needle out the opposite side thus pulling the fishing line thru. I tied knots on either end and then soaked it in alcohol for about 1 minute. Afterwards, I soaked my nipple 3 or 4 times daily in alcohol. I have had no infections and was able to painlessly change my nipple rings within a couple of weeks. Since having it done, my nipples are very thick, sensitive, and extremely sexy. I'm not normally one to have extreme body pain applied, in fact I rarely even wear earrings, but I LOVE my nipple rings.

there is a certain vein in your toungue that if struck you will bleed to death so if your feeling lucky go ahead and stab it with whatever but I wouldn't recomend it

do you know when they pierce your tongue they don't just put a hole in they take a chunk out so it is almost impossible to do it like a pro. Call around and ask about prices if money is the problem then save up enough otherwise you might be looking at large medical bills if it gets infected or is put in the wrong place. If it is parental consent you are lacking ask your parent to go check it out with you so they are informed.

for the mouth - nail a nice long galvanized nail onto a sturdy board - preferrably oak or cedar - and place on a clean surface. Open mouth and fall forward. Variation: Open mouth and have someone push you forward.
for the nipple - same procedure but adjust the fall to include nipple instead of mouth.
Variation: for a *surpise* piercing, follow same procedure, except blindfold yourself, spin around in a circle 3 times and fall forward for a surpise piercing!

I know it probably seems like a great idea, and you want to do it yourse;f to save yourself the money or because your parents won't let you or both for that matter. But if you hit the main vain in your tongue you can loose a lot of blood. Tongue rings really aren't all that anyway, I had mine for 2 years and it was a pain, it damages your teeth and a ***** to clean.
I completely understand if you want to get one, it's your body -do as you please, but get a professional to do it for you.

dont do the tongue as some people cant hve it done due to the veins.. i went to have mine done and was told i couldnt as i have a small tongue....they wouldnt even contemplate it... i have my nipple done but went to a tattoo place to have it done.. they dont freeze it as it can cause frost bite... it hurt like hell during the peircing and for about half hour later... have had it done for two years now but would not recomment doing that yourself as its very sensitive and you would prob pass out !!

NO NO NO NO NO!
You do NOT under any circumstances pierce your own tongue or nipple yourself. I have both of these 'bits' pierced so believe me you need to go to a professional body piercing studio.
Pierce your own tongue in the wrong place and you could end up bleeding to death! A good body piercer will spend 5-10 minutes examining your tongue to find the safest route through it. A nipple piercing, especially if you are female can be seriously painful, and I doubt very much you would have the nerve to carry it through. Piercing studios also used specially adapted needles that are disposable or autoclaved (if reusable) to prevent infection from Hepatitis, HIV and other such nasty infections.
For goodness sake please be adult enough to go to a professional!

By now you will have notice that all the previous contributors have told you not to. If you wish to have permanent ear infections, necrotic ( black and rotting ) nipples, and the surgical removal of your tongue due to chronic infection which will render you speechless then proceed, otherwise..........do the adult thing and get it done properly if you have the urge to mutilate yourself further.

Your tongue is packed full of important nerves and veins. If you just willy nilly pop a needle through, you are likely to cause some damage. Have a licensed piercer do it.

I hope you aren't serious about doing either one of these yourself. You should go to a professional because you could seriously injure yourself, and on top of that you could get bad infections. Just take some money and have it done correctly and safely.

YOU DON'T! Do you want a wonky piercing in either of those areas? If you do it yourself with little or no experience then you will not get a good angle. You are also likely to get an infection in the site as you do not have access to appropriate equipment. Please go to a professional piercer, if they turn you down (eg because you are too young) then listen to them. You don't want to be one of the people on here asking about plastic surgery options for piercings that went wrong!
