I never heard that, it is actually better to force yourself to puke to get what ever is left of the pill out. Best thing is to go to the hospital!

When a person OD's they are supposed to vomit to get the drug and or poison out of their system. That's why when you make it to the hospital they will pump your stomach. I have never heard of stopping the person from vomiting. The first thing to do is call 911 and seek medical attention immediately.

Get them to the emergency room. This is not really a home-remedy kind of situation.
You can use rubbing alcohol under the nose while on your way to the hospital.

I'm sorry but I'm horrified at some of the answers here- in such a serious situation as this question relates to, people really shouldn't answer unless they are SURE they know the proper answer.
as several others said, it depends on what they have taken, and depends on level of consciousness. the first action is getting emergency services involved. Some substances do not even have any initial efect and people can seem fine for a while..eg a Paracetamol OD- but the damage is being done
. If you are asking this because someone you know has OD'd please get help as soon as possible

ring 999 (assuming your'e in the UK). Whether or not to induce vomiting depends on what was taken, check the label of the pill bottle or whatever it was, it should say what immediate action to take. Basically with corrosives it is more damaging to induce vomiting, otherwise its normally best to get it out of the system asap.

The only time that it is harmful to make a person vomit a poison is when the poison is a corrosive, like acid or gasoline.
If someone is overdosed...don't waste time here. Get them to a hospital, fire station, or emergency clinic.

that is not neccessarily the case. It would only be harmful if they were unconcious and the choked on there own vomit.

Sometimes when people take an overdose on medication, they pass out or black out and slowly starts dying..well it depends on the medication of course.
but the vomit makes the poisons go out some and you cannot prevent it cuz you overdose.

It all depends on what they have overdosed on. I would ask the person how much and what they took, ask their weight and the last thing they have eaten. Then I would call poison control to find out if inducing vomitting is the right thing to do. They will know which substances will cause more damage on their way back up. And get the person to the hospital as quickly as possible so that if they need their stomach pumped, it can be done before more of the substance can absorb into their system.

depends on what you have overdosed on, in some overdoses the dr gives medication to induce vomiting.
the safest course of action is to attend your local ED asap.

I assume that as they know that they have overdosed, then they know what it is they have taken. So, 'phone your local A & E department and ask them if this person needs to come and see them. They'll need to know what the tablet is called, the dose taken ( i.e. 4 x 50 mg tablets...), age, approximate weight of the person who took the overdose and what they tooke it with (i.e. water/alcohol). It depends on what they have taken, when, what with, how old they are and how large they are.
Don't worry about stopping them vomitting, you won't be able to. However, if they have a reduced level of consciousness then you had better call an ambulance. And don't put anything in their mouth.
Ask them to take better care next time! good luck.

it depends on what they've overdosed on. its always best to go to the hospital. plus it is almost impossible to prevent vomiting if they need to because it is a reflex action.

Vomiting is body's natural reflex to get rid of poisonous material.
in some cases, we shouldn't force the casualty to vomit ,
eg. if a person had accidentally ingested an Acidic substance ! here, if vomiting occured, it'd burn the esophagus and throat .
(so we'd better give him milk to calm the acidity & heat)another cases where vomiing is NOT preferrable :
persons on convulsions (fits) , pregnants and Comatosed patients !
In a nutshell, it depends on the ingested substance , but generally, vomiting is preferred ( till the victim goes to the hospital for a gastric lavage)

You dont you let them do what is natural and even when a person has vomitted they keep a per centage still in stomache so best thing is try and keep them awake and get them to hospital straight away.
REMEMBER to ask what they have taken and also take the bottle with you so the hospital know what they are dealing with as there is different types of treatment depending on substances taken.

Get that person to the hospital immediately!!!
He or She needs Activated Charcoal!!! This will prevent the absorption of the toxins by the gastrointestinal tract.
Take your friend to the hospital ASAP- Do not wait any longer, vital organs can be seriously injured and death can also be a result. Best of Luck. . .

It depends what they have taken of course. Vomiting gets the poison out of them but if they are unconscious they could choke on the vomit. The only thing to do is phone emergency services or take them to A & E (Hospital)yourself

What you should not do is INDUCE vomiting. It's best to get them to a hospital IMMEDIATELY and then leave it to the hospital staff, they're trained to deal with such situations. If someone is being sick before they get to hospital, don't suppress it as it's the body's way of getting rid of poisons. They may be able to give something like a charcoal drink to stop the absorption of the poison.

It's really important to get medical treatment, especially if you don't know what they've taken. Different poisons cause more trouble coming back up, or the person could choke on their vomit. Don't try to self-treat someone- they might need stomach pumping or something you can't do.

If someone has overdosed they REALLY REALLY REALLY need to be at a hospital. Some things do need to be vomited up - and some things don`t. The reason some things are better not vomited up is they will burn the gullet. Please , if someone has done this, get them to hospital - NOW THIS MINUTE. X
