Why don't fat obese people do something about themselves?
They know they look awful, they know they are most likely going to die a hideous death from fat related illnesses but still they get bigger and more gross.

I really really cannot understand why someone would do this to themselves.

Drugs, Alcohol and smoking addicts know their time is counting down but over eating seems to be a taboo subject.

If you are a fat person stuffing as you read this remeber you clock is ticking my friend.

Yes I have heard of compassion but that won't help these people. It will make the worse and more wobbly.

I agree its awful. Your question made me laugh alot! Unless they have a medical problem when they can`t do anything about they weight they should lose weight or not gain it in the first place. It makes me sick to look at fat people, i must admit. Its their own choice but if they are stupid enough to get obese then they will face the consequences! They don`t lose weight because they can`t be bothered and some people are actually happy to be fat! Can you beleive that?

All fat people cannot be put into the same category. Before I answer, I would like to address the way we speak about obesity. First, I am not convinced that being fat is a disease. I choose not to call it an epidemic, or even an addiction. Life is about choices, and for the majority of overweight citizens, they are making the choice to be fat. When you go fishing, you don't expect to throw your line in the water and pull out a cow, right? In other words, the behavior is directly proportional to the results. It's not necessarily that they overeat; it's that they eat the wrong things. If someone goes to Wendy's three times a day, to me, that's not eating a huge amount of food, but it's the caloric intake that counts against them. Also, being inactive is a huge problem. Life is so convenient for us. We drive everywhere, we can have our groceries delivered, kids play video games instead of playing outdoors. It's about choices. With all that said, when we see fat people, we have no idea where they are coming from, or what they're history is. They could be on the path to weight loss; they could be 50 pounds smaller than they were the year before; they could have just walked out of the gym! My point is you don't know what steps someone is taking in order to make themselves healthier. I agree with the post about behavior modification. In order to change habits, you must change the behavior that fuels the habit. This is the missing link with diets today. They show you how to lose weight fast, but they leave you with nothing in the emotional department. Most people are emotional eaters, that's a fact. We all need to learn that food is only designed to give us the nutrients we need to be healthy. That's it; there's no more to it. So now we have Emeril and The Barefoot Contessa on TV, both of which could stand to lose some weight, and they teach us how to make these delicious, high fat, high sodium meals. It's ok to enjoy your food, but the main purpose of it is to supply you with nutrients. The bottom line is this: for those who have no genetic predisposition to weight gain (the majority, in my opinion), get up, get active, and do something about your health, TODAY. Don't do it for your kids, your husband or your friends. Don't even do it for society. Do it because you want to live!

The epidemic of obesity is a huge problem today in America and it is starting to present itself alot in particular with kids. I admit that alot has to do with how cheap and readily available fast food has become. Fried foods are cheap and they taste good too. I also admit that the responsibility also falls on the individual who puts the food in their mouth to watch the way they eat. Some people really do like to eat and don't like to exercise but then you do have those individuals who really do legitimately have health problems that are preventing them from losing weight so you can't judge everyone in the same manner. Being mean and belittling someone doesn't help either. You said that if you show them compassion that is not going to work, it will only make them fatter, how do you know? Have you ever tried being nice and compassionate to them before, or are you just making that assumption?. A person has to decide to change their lifestyle and decide that they want to lose weight just like with any other addiction and when they are ready to change you have to give them support and encouragement just like you would with any other individual trying to quit doing drugs or drinking alcohol. Just don't make assumptions or jump to conclusions because every individual's situation is unique. People in general should exercise to live a better and healthier lifestyle and not look to quick fix solutions such as diet pills or surgery, but everyone makes their own choice and you just have to live your own lifestyle.

quote 'Drugs, Alcohol and smoking addicts know their time is counting down but over eating seems to be a taboo subject'

All compulsive behaviours and all 'killers' but there is one difference you seem to have overlooked!

You can give up drugs, alcohol and smoking completely but WE ALL NEED FOOD!
It makes it very difficult to control and I know many 'overweight' 'fat' and 'obese' people who are TRYING to do something! Which is more than can be said of me!!!!
I'm a smoker and I'm NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT!
I have my own reasons for not doing it but it has nothing to do with you or anyone else!
My daughter has the guts to try and lose weight, not because of ill-informed ignorant prats like you who judge her on her weight but because she knows what she needs to do to slow down those ticking hands!

The reason your getting all the thumbs down is bcoz your an ********, u might be happily married but with a stinking attitude like yours i doubt your partner is. You think you and your life are perfect but I bet your miserable as sin, have no friends (even tho you think you have loads!) and are very very bored.

Let me address your mean and ignorant question.

You mentioned alchohol and other drugs as being things which a person knows is bad, and their time is short. Food can be the same way except as you say its a slow death.

What you may not realize is that food is just another addiction which can be most times be driven by emotions. Also there are genetics that make people more pre-disposed for addiction type behaviors.

It is a tough cycle to break, and people can choose what they put in their mouths. Most of the time emotional eaters go for the food they find the most comfort from like Krispy Kreme Dounuts.

What it comes down to is behavior modification, and the belief that you don't have to be like past generations in the family. Diet (lifestyle) and exercise is important . Weight Watchers is a great program which focuses on portion control and simple walking is a good start

It's people like you that keep people like me entrenched in an eating disorder!!! You seem to regard all those who happen to be obese as stupid, lazy or indifferent. I know I'm obese and I know why. I'm exercising every day and eating a healthy diet and I'm trying to do something about it. People with the attitude you have don't help us at all!! Just because I'm big doesn't give the rest of the world the right to call me names in the street and assume I'm lazy and overeat just for fun. I'm probably more intelligent than you could ever be and I respect myself far too much to judge other people in any way.

Have you ever had treatment for OCD? Being obsessed about other people is awful for you and you need treatment. You need to realise to get along in the world there are many people of different shapes, sizes and colour and prejudice against someone that doesn't fit what you think they should isn't really what modern society needs right now. I'm sure with proper mental health treatment you could become a functioning member of society.

Your question presumes, and rather unfairly, I think, that "fat, obese people DON'T do something about themselves." As a matter of fact, many DO something, and some of them actually lose weight. And for many, the weight stays on or even gets worse.

And you've left out the population that is well aware of their geometry and actually like it that way. Bear in mind that there are many who find BIG to be GOOD. And so, many men admire "BBW's" (big, beautiful women) and many women admire "BHM's" (big, handsome, men). And thus, your statement that "They know they look awful" is not at all true in many cases.

Compulsive eating and the weight gain that goes with it is often an addicitive behavior, which, like all addictions, tends to become self-maintaining with time: the more you eat, the more you CAN eat and the more you WANT to eat. In this, it is hardly any different than booze, dope, Nicotine or any other substance with addictive qualities.

You ask "why?" Setting aside organic or glandular problems, the answer is often that eating (drinking, smoking) is a psychological adaptation; a mechanism whose pay-back is initially some reward, and later becomes a self-sustaining habit. At that stage, it is not simply a matter of just "doing something" about it.

I'll bet you -I'll just bet you, that YOU, too, have a behavior which you should really do something about. I would guess it has to do with being very self-absorbed and swift to judge because that makes you feel good about yourself. What say you?

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking are diseases that have been around for quite a long time. Obesity is something that is just beginning to be seen as a disease. (that's for people that over eat or don't exercise)

For some, it's a low metabolism or glandular issue that could be passed down from their mother or father.

I did my thesis about obesity and it is being graded now.

There are the following causes:

Disbalance between energetic intake and energetic expense
Genetic proneness
Metabolic disorders (Thyroid problems, adrenal cortex problems)
Pyschological problems (typically anxiety)

There are the following solutions:
To read Nutritional guides by the USDA and apply them
To have a new attitude about food and physical activity
To find the specific metabolic problem and solve it
To find pleasure and leisure outside food to learn to cope with stress.
In extreme cases, Orlistat
Surgeries as gastric bypass or gastric balloon

Now that you have more understanding about the causes and the remedies, please have more compassion for you cant be sure obese people do nothing about their problem

People get 'fat' for all kinds of reasons. I used food as a comfort after my mum died and put on 5 stone. Didn't like the way I looked so I did something about it and lost the weight. But try thinking before you judge!

I do agree that over weight, especially obese, people should not eat so much.

However, you are just down right mean with the way you asked this question. Very demeaning! No, I'm not fat. In fact, my metabolism won't let me gain weight. I'm 5'5" and have weighed 115lbs most of my life.

Obese people may or may not die a "hideous" death as you say, but mean people like you have something else coming to you.

Some have given up on themselves. There is that thinner person inside them and they just need the right word at the right time from the right person to make it happen. Words are powerful; use them correctly and efficiently.

Maybe they just want to live a happy life, without diets or restrictions, until they die. Even if their death comes before most.

Not everyone has the same priorities in life.

like ignorance, obesity is hard to fight.

like a rolling snowball it doesn't happen "all of a sudden"

glands do sometimes play a role.

but some people find comfort in food, like when some stupid idiot calls em fat ***.

i'm sure fat people know all that stuff, but if you are so perfect you have never struggled with any kind of addictive situation (which i highly doubt) don't throw stones!

Well over eating is a psychological problem really and those kind of problems are not solved as easily as snapping your fingers. It takes time, help and support and a lack of negative comments from those who don't understand, which is perhaps the hardest thing of all to overcome.

I imagine addiction to food is similar to all other addictions...drink/drugs/gambling etc. So, therefore with your way of thinking, anyone with an addiction can just...give up. I hope you never have to live with someone who has an addiction of any kind, life is never quite as black and white as you seem to think it is.
I have just read your other questions and you seem completely obsessed with weight...maybe you are overweight yourself!

I don't think it's as easy as that, there's a lot more to losing weight than just cutting down food it's very psychological as well. I think for as you call it "fat obese people", food is like a vicious circle and something they use to get rid of stress, pressure, unhappiness etc..
