What to eat for breakfast if I need to lose weight?
|
I am trying to lose weight by eating less and eating better foods. What do you suggest I eat for breakfast in the mornings so that I can drop a few pounds? I've got dinner and lunches down, just not breakfast foods yet. Additional Details
Also, I know fruit is good to eat, but am very low on cash, and buying fresh fruit is rather expensive so I can only afford it sometimes.

Try buying supermarket own branded tinned fruit. It is just as good but you can eat as little or as much as you like. Average tin costs just 40p which you can use over two days at 20p! Can't get any cheaper than that whilst still getting one portion of your 5 a day. Or have a banana each morning this will stop you from feeling hungry until lunch time. Porridge is another good souce of fibre and costs very little. Don't forget exercise is necessary to lose weight too!

Oats are very good for reducing cholesterol and keep you from getting hunger pangs for quite a while. Porridge with skimmed or semi-skimmed milk is therefore a pretty good place to start (and its cheap!). Just make sure your portion is around the size of your fist and no bigger.

Porridge with UHT skimmed milk, with honey. Filling and cheap. Pour 3 ounces of porridge into a deep breakfast bowl, cover with milk, microwave for 2 minutes and 20 seconds. Pour on a spoonful of honey and a sliced banana if you have one.The weight will drop off.
Stop eating all wheat/ bread products because it not only bulks you up but you always add fats like butter or margarine and some other usually sugary substance or another fatty stuff like pate' or cold meats.

a good breakfast should be one that sustains you through to lunch. It should consist of slow release energy, provided by complex carbohydrates found in foods like oatmeal, so porage is an excellent breakfast. It is also cheap. Sure you can buy fancy porage, with dried fruit and nuts added, but these are expensive. Go to any supermarket and you will be able to pick up a kilo of own-brand porage for around £1. if you use 50g for each breakfast that will last you 20 days at a cost of 5p per day.
As regards fruit, stop buying it at the supermarket and go to the local asian store. Fruit there is much less pricey than at western shops, and you have the added delight of store owners who really appreciate your custom and treat you with old-fashioned courtesy and respect.
My own recipe for preparing porage is as follows.
50 g porage or oatflakes.
a liberal pinch of salt
sweetener to taste (i personally use a heaped teaspoonful)
200 ml of skimmed milk
any chopped fruit i feel like adding but this isnt necessary
place in microwave on full power for 4 minutes.
Enjoy!

This is THE breakfast to help you keep in shape and, most importantly, you won't be at all hungry until lunchtime so won't feel the need to snack.
Make a bowl of porridge with 5 (soup) spoons of fine to medium oats (flakes) mixed with one mug of liquid. I use a small amount of semi skimmed milk topped up with water...but all water or all lower fat milk is fine...whatever your taste.
Finely chop 1 small/medium banana and place in bowl...add your cooked porridge and mix gently to distribute the banana.
Drizzle a good amount of honey on top ( NOT sugar ) and then add a small amount of semi skimmed milk to your taste.
It is tasty, filling and the slow energy release of the oats and banana will set you up for the day.

Porridge is the best breakfast food as it is a slow release carbohydrate and the best thing is to bulk it up by putting raisins into while it is cooking in the pot and they will swell up and become juicy. Watch the portion sizes, 35g of (dry) porridge is plenty. Chopped banana, strawberries ans some blueberries are delicious on any cereal and the best place to buy fruit that is not too expensive is in Lidl or Aldi supermarkets.

Porridge is a great breakfast. Really easy to make and fills you up till lunch which stops you being tempted to snack. Though try to use half water half milk to make it up. All milk is not good for diets!

cheap and sustainable and very healthy is porridge or two toasts with a piece of fruit , the fruit has the effect of releasing the sugar into your blood stream slowly throughout the morning.

You really can't beat Porridge. I like it with a chopped banana.
It keeps me fuller for longer. You could also try wholemeal toast with peanut butter and a couple of oranges. Above all, use the "fire in the woods" analogy as you eat throughout the day - ie a little bit and often...don't dampen your fire (metabolism) by chucking too much wood (food) in all at once. Aim to eat every 3 hours or so.
Finally, I'm a recent convert to the world of juicing. Get yourself a decent wide chute juicer and enjoy the world of juicing...fruit and/or veg....I've never ever felt better !

Hi
I do the slimming world diet, i understand that if you are on a low income this can be expensive to join, they do offer a free week online trial, you can download some great menus that may get you started for free, the menus that are on there that are really filling, easy to make, cheap and normal recepies. You don't need to subscribe it is literally a free week trial and then it auto ends. On this diet you can have a great big breakfast I do the green diet (veg) so I would have a few poached eggs or fried eggs as long as thet are fried in fry light( this is a very low cal oil spray- available in most supermarkets even seen this in Aldi). Tomato fried in fry light, baked beans, mushrooms and 2 pieces of 400g brown bread lightly buttered( but with the beans and egg dont even need butter). This would be basically free to eat in any quantity that you liked except for the bread on a green day, (on green day the baked beans more the merrier as they also speed up your metabolisim), which at most a day should be 4 pieces of this size of brown bread on 2 pieces if you have another healthy extra each day such as a small bowl of fruit fribre/2 weetabix etc. On the meat eating diet you could have the same but replace the beans for lots of grilled bacon.
I eat so much at slim world ( more than ever) been on diet again 2 weeks lost just over half stone so far.Last time I done the diet lost 4 stone but ate lots so not hungry, they encourage you to eat lots of the right food to keep your metabolism up and I dont mean lettuce! Example of 1Typical day ( but lots of meals to chose from) Breakfast as above example, mid morning Muller Light Yougart and lots of Fruit, Dinner Jacket spud with Beans or Tuna Mayo, Muller Light and Fruit, afternoon Tea and a Hob Nob biscuit, Evening Big Plate Mash, Quorn Sausages( I like these some don't can have different things) and Small serve Gravy, Veg , Evening Snack Curly Wurly or Bag of Skips, Supper if still need 2brown toast 400g loaf or Bowl Fruit and Fibre. Can also eats lots of the free food in addittion to this all day e.g salad, mash, fruit, jacket spud, pasta on the free day and you would have the semi skim milk and can have for example 28g cheese a day, 5 laugh cow extra light triangles ( 2 dairlea) on the veggie day, all low cal drinks free and tea coffee but, only using you half pint semi skim milk allowence for cereals and tea. You could even pop along to a local group, and ask if you can buy a recipe book for the eat as much as you like menus or low SYN menus they cost from 2.95 but a good investment for ideas as they have 100 recepies and meau ideas.
Other good things for Breakfast Oats so simple made with semi skim milk or skimmed. Any porridge really but the Oatso are in the right portion sixe 28g that you should eat so this is a good guideline, remember the porridge bulks up when cooked with the milk and is filling, sweeten with sweetner, fruit and fibre, bran flakes, weetabix. Little bit of fruit, Natrual Yougart, handful low sugar museli and a small squirt of honey is nice and suprisingly filling. Brown Bread Toast, boiled eggs, Very Low fat flavoured yogs ( must be Muller light or VERY low fat flavoured yougarts ( not just low fat!!) hope that all helps

It is really important to eat a good breakfast if you want to lose weight. Your body thinks it has been starved all night, so you need to kick start your metabolism first thing in the morning. it depends what you can face, a bowl of unsweetened cereal, with a sliced banana, skimmed milk and a glass of orange juice is a healthy start. If you feel you need a fry up, scrambled egg, grilled low fat bacon and grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, or if you have to have fried invest in a spray oil so you use less. Even on a low budget fruit can be cheaper than processed foods. Always buy fruit loose (not pre packed), try to buy from a market stall at the end of the day (they want to get rid so it is often cheaper) and dont go for unseasonal such as strawberries in winter, they will have been either forced or imported which all add to the cost. Good luck with the weight loss and remember you are not on a diet you are just changing your eating habits.

a fiber cereal is good and most people don't get enough from fruits and vegetables. use skim milk for it or if you can;t handle that use 1%. Also a south beach diet breakfast bar is okay. they are actually pretty decent tasting and they're not a little tiny thing that you want to eat 2 of them. or oatmeal is good for you too.

I suggest high fibre breakfast cereals that will keep you fuller for longer weetabix, shreddies, porridge use semi skimmed milk- no sugar ! Fruit and a low fat yoghurt. or a grilled bacon sandwich using wholemeal bread and low fat spread.
If your finding fruit expensive try going to the supermarkets when they reduce that days stock you can find some real bargains this usually happens in the eveneings on weekdays. Or opt for tinned or frozen fruit. frozen fruit is ideal for making smoothies which is also another breakfast option.

I find an energy shake of bananas, blueberries and a bit of black grape juice blended together great for getting me off to a good start each day.
The more energised your body feels should help to directly rev up your metabolism. If your metabolism is operating at optimum levels then your body will burn energy (fat).
Everyone is different. For me what affects how much weight I lose is based on what I eat in the evenings and how late I eat my last meal. I try not to eat anything after 7.30pm/8pm.

Hi, I read the other day that if you eat a half a grapefuit (I don't think it matters whether it's red or white) before each meal it will help digestion and also burn calories too, if you don't like grapefruit (like me) I suggest you juice it with some orange and it helps break the tangyness. I suggest trying for at least two weeks even 1 month. Hope this helps....

To lose weight and stay slim, it is not just breakfast which is important but your overall diet. This morning for eg I had Greek yogurt with some chopped walnuts mixed with a chopped peach and sweetened with a little fresh orange juice, a cup of black coffee and some rye toast. Stay away from red meat, eat fish, and lots of fruit and veges, salads etc. Avoid dairy, cheese etc, and gluten products, bread, pasta etc, and beer. Red wine is good to have with evening meal as it helps break down fats. Fruit etc can be expensive but if you use local markets you will save money. I was over weight last year and have lost 15 kilos in past 6 months. And I do not count calories but eat little and often

If you take notice of what you can or can't have, You will end up like a pencil, I eat in moderation and enjoy what I eat. Not easy trying to eat 5 a day veg and fruit because it's expensive and I can't always remember to get it in, So I just have a little or everything and see how it goes, Eat when your hungry and don't nipple in between meals, As long as you eat in moderation you can enjoy yourself without worrying over what it might do, Make sure you get a big meal as lease twice a day and don't eat tooo much of it, Hugs Suzie

I will offer you some free advise which no so-called expert will tell you. As a trained Osteopath and nutrionalist, but moreover as a Professional bodybuilder I will advise you that breakfast is an essential meal because quite simply your body has been asleep for circa 6-8 hours and has had no energy intake and yet still has expended energy such as REM sleep, blinking, breathing, tossing and turning, dreaming, etc. Thus you start your day in a minus energetic state which needs rectifying. This is called a catabolic condition which simply means that your body will eat itself for fuel.
Its simple to understand if you consider the following.....
Your out in the forest camping and you light a camp fire, do you smother the fire with a lot of folage or do you fuel it with smaller amounts on a regular basis? This is how your metabolism works, if you eat a massive sunday lunch or Christmas dinner lots of your blood will be diverted for digestion hence the feeling one experiences of being tired and lethargic. Eat regular amounts every two hours and you will have more energy, weight control and constant blood sugar levels.
I never and I mean NEVER miss breakfast no matter what....I eat, A protein shake in water, Organis Oats cooked in water with Cinamon and a banana sliced, 6 eggs with 2 egg yolks, a couple of rice cakes with marmite and water/honey melon and of course lots of water.
I hope this assists you.
Michael A Conrad.

I used to go to Slimming World, and lost weight, even though you get enormous amounts to eat. A typical breakfast might be a big bowl of tinned grapefruit and orange segments, followed by a slice of wholewheat toast smothered in as much grilled tomatoes and mushrooms as you can manage, topped with a poached egg. I couldn't believe I would lost weight, but I did. Lunches and dinners are just as big. Don't ask me how it works!

Porridge is seriously the very best breakfast. It is coming up to summer, so it might a bit warm but it's just soooo good for you and super-satifying.
Easy too: put a third of a cup of porridge oats (just normal, cheap ones from the supermarket) in a mixing bowl (to give the milk space to boil up) with a cup of milk and stir it. Microwave on full power for 2 minutes before you go in the shower in the morning. It will boil up and then 'cook' under it's own heat.
When you're ready for breakfast, give it another stir and ding it for another 1 or 2 minutes, stir again, serve in a normal cereal bowl if you're gracious or eat straight from the mixing bowl if you're like me! Drink some fresh orange or pineapple juice to cut through the milkiness.
I honestly noticed the difference in my hunger levels, was not hungry for at least 3 hours after porridge, whereas with cereal or toast I was hungry less than an hour later.
Good luck with the diet! Can you give me some tips for dinners?
Claire

Stick to what nature and evolution has combined to provide you as a human animal: Meat, fish, eggs and dairy products (nevermind about the fat content, it's all good) and recognisable fruit and veg.
What to avoid can be summed up in one word: Cereal.
Humans did not evolve eating grass and that's all cereals are..Our bodies, metabolisms, are confused by cereal products and they mess up the process humans evolved to cope with 'proper' foods effectively. Cereals, and the things made from cereals, make you fat, in other words. Cake, obviously, but also bread and pasta. It doesn't matter that they don't contain fat. That's not how it works. Your body would digest fat anyway. The cereal makes YOU make fat.
That knocks out all these suggestions that porridge and bran are good things to eat if you want to lose weight. They, absolutely, are not good for that. The exact opposite is true. They're disastrous and doomed.
