Multiple things. Firstly, it fills your stomach and makes you less hungry, which means you eat more which means you consume less calories resulting in weight loss. Secondly, water is the only substance that is metabolized by the body, so drinking water keeps your metabolism up which means you lose more weight.

Well if you drink something other than water it usually contains a lot of sugar and other fattening substances. Such as soft drinks containing over 10 teaspoons of sugar in just a small can. Soft drinks also give you cellulite.
You lose a lot of water every day.
"Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired. "
So if you have water you wont dehydrate and you will still have energy meaning you will still be able to lose weight and be healthy.
I would suggest drinking at least 8 glasses of water every day. I know you're probably thinking "wow 8 glasses thats alot" but if you calculate the typical glasses of water you will drink, plus water from certain foods, you will realize that you probably take in over 8 cups of water.
Its especially important to drink water now while its summer because since you sweat you lose even more water. And Dehydration can lead to the damage of many body functions.
One way you can tell if you're dehydrated or not (its kinda nasty) is if your urine is yellow. It really shouldn't be.
Water also helps you remove lots of bacteria from your body through sweat and urination.
Hope this helps.

Your body is over 80% water. It is a necessary part or a healthy diet. It helps you lose weight in a few ways but one of the key points is that you're not consuming the extra calories that are present in soft drinks and other sweetened beverages.

Ou bodies are made mostly of water, therefore it is important to replenish the water that we lose through sweating, breathing, and urination to prevent dehydration. When we become dehydrated, our cells are unable to function properly. Water is considered healthier than other processed liquids becuase it has less additives and toxins. Of course, today's water supply has more toxins than water did years ago.

Your body's mostly water, and you pee a lot of it out all the time! You've got to fill up again. If you don't pee enough (from the water you drink), stuff can build up in your bladder and form kidney stones, which I've heard hurt more than giving birth. And I've hear that hurts a LOT.
If you drink anythink with caffiene, that can actually suck water out of your body, so your body doesn't have enough water in it even though you're drinking coffee or soda or whatever (which has water in it).

There are multiple answers to this.
Water helps us process. Think of a pipe of sludge and one that runs clean. If your water consumption in general is poor, or you substitute sodas for water, you are not allowing your system to process effectively. By drinking healthy quantities of water you allow your body to clean itself, purge the wastes from cells to colons.
Water can fill you up. If you drink a lot of water before a meal you're taking up volume in your stomach. More volume means you're going to not eat as much.
Water is zero cal. Substituting water for generally anything else can't be beat. No additives, no preservatives, no strange chems, just water.
With a healthy attitude towards your body, a simple workout program, good food lifestyle choices, and water, you can go far.

Over 75% of our body is water. The rest are chemicals. In order to maintain a healthy system, we need to keep our water levels at around that percentage. As far as weight loss, if you fill up your stomach with enough fluids you will feel less hunger. In a survival situation the first thing you must do is to secure water and then food. If you eat a lot of red meat, you will have to drink a lot of water in order to digest is better. Drinking water also flushes out your system. It also helps you feel and think better. Have you noticed that in the morning your head feels like it's in a fog? That is because are you are dehydrated. You are losing your water through sweating. Not to mention urination.
You should consume about 2 liters of water everyday. In small increments throughout the day.
Enough info I think
Thanks for your question
EDIT: By the time I submitted my answer there were 20 before me. WOW! I didn't know such a question would solicit so many responses.

Water bonds to alot of compounds in our body that aids in the reactions that constantly keep us moving. Whether it be blood flow, brain activity, metabolism, or an immune response, our body responds by chemically reacting, the product of which reactions result in the functions we need to survive, move, breath, think . Some things in our body need to hydrogen bond in order to change their confirmation and proceed with these responses that keep you active as the person you are today. Without water, your body has limited stores to use and your body cannot carry out its day to day function. This is why you cannot survive for very long without it, thus why it is so important.

Our bodies are made up of 80, yes 80% water! Without it your body wont function, digest, cool down, or process toxins correctly. Drinking alot of water will help your body rid of everything that is unnatural and polluting your body. Try drinking alot of water if your looking to be healthy. Not only that, but it will help you to feel fuller before meals so you wont binge eat

When you are well hydrated, you feel full. A lot of times, feeling "hungry" is really about being thirsty (dehydrated).
Water is pure and doesn't need your body to filter things out of it (as it does with coffee, tea, soda, etc.) So water travels around picking up waste and flushing it out of your body without creating more waste in the process.
Your body is 60-78% water, depending on your size.
Think of your body like you would a houseplant: if you don't water it properly, it will wilt and eventually die. If you give the houseplant an can of Diet Coke (instead of water), it's going to react badly and eventually die.
Water is essential to life. When you're trying to lose weight, it's crucial.

Your body is about 90% water, so everything in your body needs water. Water helps get rid of the toxins in your body. Your joints need water so they don't hurt. Your eyes need water, believe me dry eyes are no fun. I've been there. If you don't drink enough water your will start retaining it as your body is scared you won't give it anymore. It helps you feel full so you don;t eat as much. Alot of times they say people are really thirsty but they eat because they think they are hungry.

Drinking water keeps your body hydrated so it can function correctly. It flushes out your system so you can build muscle and lose fat. It's like putting oil in your car. If you don't put oil in your car it will break down. You must drink water throughout the day!

Your body is like 70-80% water...the more you drink the healthier you are!
Your cells need water to live. If you don't drink, they start to suck out your "reserves" in your body. You have to keep these filled for emergencies. So best to replenish cells with fresh water.
Organs, like the stomach need water to keep healthy. Your intestines need it to.. When you have diareah(whatever) it is because your large intestine has no water. So you need H20 to keep that healthy too.
Healthy Organs = Healthy You.
Your body will use more water, than fat, to make up your cells, so you will lose weight.
