As long as she work out even if is secret is good, the point is that she is working out for good right?, let her jump and dance in her room so she can speed up the heart rate and start melting some fat. Walking a dog, probably if you go to a park with her and walk, riding bike will not hurt

Good for her for trying! And good for you for wanting to be supportive!
Why not make it a family goal to be healthy- not just focus on thin?
That means- no buying ice cream, chips, soda and junk; yes to buying lots of veggies, water bottles, lean meats and energy bars and trying out new recipes that have lots of spice, much less fat.
In terms of activity- what about walking? Drive to another town and walk the track with her, talking. What a great bonding activity. Do it somewhere where no one knows her, so she won't feel obvious.
Once you get her moving and she drops a few pounds, she will feel more fit, have more endurance and will be ready to bring her activities closer to home.
You say you think she is exercising in secret- ASK her! And if she is, tell her what a great idea to jump start her program on her own!
Would she like an exercise ball, some workout videos, dance music to pump her up, or a yoga mat? My daughter bought me all of the above to get me started.:)
How about a Y membership? She can swim (great workout!) or play basketball.
Running is not the only way to drop pounds. Just being active is a good start. Ask her what appeals to her, and be her partner in this.
Good luck to both of you for trying to correct a significant health problem.

Jump rope is a really fast way to burn calories and lose weight. She can do that at home and it can be fun. She is 11 though, you should REALLY talk with your doctor. Kids lose and gain weight while they are growing... bad nutrition could stunt growth... make sure she is eating well.

The best way is to encourage her to start swimming . Swimming burns fat and builds muscles. It does not create stress on unfuzed growth plates like running does. it is also something that she can do summer and winter.

I would try to find an alternative activity that is fun for her that isn't necessarily "exercise"- like a sport if that is fun for her or dance class. She doesn't need to run, she could take tap dance, or pom pom dancing (very high Energy!) or do rock climbing on an indoor wall. You could even encourage her to do things like walk dogs at the local animal shelter (or the neighbor's dogs). 11 might be young to take up yoga, but if it's not, that's a good way to build muscle and increase flexibility.
As a mom, if you haven't done it already, I would get all the junk food out of the house and make an effort to keep healthy foods around and support her in choosing nourishing and wholesome foods rather than processed ones. Help her find tasty, healthy snacks that she likes. Be creative with her!
Most of all, just make sure that she knows that you love her and think she is beautiful no matter what- focus on it from a health aspect (if you exercise a few times a week and don't lose any weight, you will still see health benefits!) rather than a superficial aspect. She will get enough of that kind of pressure later on from society and her peers.

While you figure it out, how about some work out routines on DVD?
I assume you've got her diet worked out so that she is eating correctly.
Are there any games you can play indoors that will get her moving around adecuately? Fresh air is part of good excercise. If she won't run, how about long walks? Cycling? Tennis? In-line skating?
Is she firmly attached to a Playstation or the TV in general? You might have to trade couch hours for excecise hours. She may have to earn those hours with kilometres walked or some such scheme.

Change the foods in the house, if their are junk foods that she really really likes, keep those, but limit the amount of them in the house, don't tell her she can't have them. Get rid of the things that people in the house don't really care about. Walking is a great way to work out. Hiking is to, you can go a lot of miles on a day of hiking, and no one will see her. Have her get into a certain sport. Find some classes in the area that allow you to try a sport for a few weeks. Then if you like it you can get into it. Individual sports are really good like that, yoga, rock climbing, karate, these are all things that strengthen you that aren't often out in the open so people wouldn't see her. And a beginners class would allow you both to be at the same level as others in the class and not be as self concious. One more good thing about a class is its a scheduled time every week to work out, so you can't avoid it. Just be supportive of her, this is an opportunity to broaden your horizons, take advantage of it.

I know what you mean. I am 13. I believe that I am... fat (don't take offence to that, I'm just sayin'.)
I want to lose weight, too. Just put her on a diet.
But you might wanna ask her doctor first to make sure which kind of diet. Just to be safe.
Yeah, I don't really like to go to the gym either or run in public. But, I have to. Considering I'm have a Gym class and everyday (Monday-Friday), 5th hour we have to do some kind of excersizing [sp?]. But, the teacher picks whether we have to power-walk (a fast walk) or if we have to jog or run. (Mostly, anywhere from 4 to 9 minutes... straight.)
Then, we do stretches/epics. Push-ups. anything.
After all that, we finally do the activity he planned for us.
I found out that I AM losing weight.

Losing weight starts with YOU. You need to cook her food with fewer calories. Since, she's 11 I can't see her cooking her own dinner. Go on walks WITH her around your neighborhood. She'll be more inclined to go if someone is with her to talk to. You could also give her incentive to walk by giving her a new ipod to listen to while she walks/runs. Along with that try to get her involved in a sport. (softball, tennis) That way she can meet some new friends along the way.
If that doesn't work you could always get at treadmill. She could watch tv and walk at the same time.

Get a ttreadmill so she can run in private. Stick it in front of the tv. Everyone in the family take turns using it when the tv is on so she is not singled out. No tv unless the treadmill is being used while watching. Your whole family will benefit.

It's ok if she works in secret. She's embarrassed about her self and that's the best solution for her to loose weight.
Also try to eat less fatty/sugary foods (she can eat them once in a while) and make her eat more veggies. Too much meat is bad too.(unless it's roasted, not fried, chicken that's lower in fat)

I was the same way. I bought myself a skipping rope and an exercise ball. She could lose weight with just skipping on one spot...the exercise ball should come with different exercises and she could build up muscle using her own body weight. All done in the convenience of inside the home and on one spot....maybe even right in front of the t.v.

Maybe you can get her some dance dvds or something fun she will like doing. Dance glasses or gymnastics could be really fun for her if she will go in public. If you can afford it maybe buy a treadmill where she can run at home watching tv or listening to the radio.

It's time to find an activity that she enjoys like swimming or gymnastics, dance, etc. Or join a sports team (soccer is tons of fun and a great workout!) or find an activity that you guys can do together like take walks with the family pet, or bike rides. Go out and explore the world together. Just being active will help with weight loss.
Also, as the mom, it's your job to ensure you are provide healthy meals and snacks for her. This can be a great opportunity to teach her about healthy food and healthy treatment of her body.
What ever you do DO NOT CRITICIZE HER! You will only make her self conscious. Let her know that these changes are so everyone in the family can get healthy together.

Work out with her.
***************
Wanna know that I have dropped almost 10 pounds in less then 2 weeks by simply changing my diet. I stopped drinking soda completely. I drink water and an occasional fruit smoothie. I cut my portions down dramatically. A serving of meat is the size equivalent to a deck of cards. I switched to only whole wheat pasta. I eat 5 times a day, even if it's just half a protein bar. I eat a lot more fruits and veggies. A diet that's great where you will eat the same everyday foods is the Glucose Impact diet. That's not what I am following. But you can cook meals and she really won't know the difference.
One thing is to stay away from those chemical sweeteners. Just cut back on the amount of sugar. Those sweeteners only heighten your craving for sugar since you aren't giving in to it even a little.
Good luck with her.
