5 miles is plenty to lose weight, but having a good diet will help as well, remember to drink plenty of fluids.
Try different exercise routines to vary as you may get bored off constantly running.
Swimming is a great way to lose weight as it uses all the muscles in your body and is fun to!
Exercise with your friends as it will become fun and they can keep you going.

You can lose weight with running, also try swimming and always have breakfast.

Yes. That's plenty. Don't over do it or you will burn out. Pace yourself. You will make it. Just relax and get into a groove you can live with so you can keep it off. Run, walk, exercise sensibly, just like you eat, and all will be well. :)

Well Done. Have you thought about looking into your training zones. I know that this can be abit OTT. But you will lose more weight if you keep your heart rate in the 70%-85% training zone.

Also healthy eating plays a big part in losing weight too. So please dont neglect this side of things.

Most of your replies have covered having a rest day, eating smart ect.

Well Done....

Running daily is certainly good.

BUT 5 MILES, EVERY DAY, IS WAY TOO MUCH !

(unless you worked up to it over about a year by running half a mile, every other day, and increasing the frequency and distance gradually)

If you aren't already an experienced runner, 5 miles a day will almost certainly injure you, most likely your knees, but also calves and shins.

5 miles is a long way, and coupled with a healthy, nutritious diet you should start to see the difference soon after you start doing it.
Remember, if you start being able to do 5 miles easily then increase the amount so that you progress, otherwise it will start having much less effect. It should work, at least to a certain extent.
Good luck!

More than enough! But you also need to have a good diet to go with such amount of exercise. Wish I could run that much everyday!!! Good luck

Yes, that will work. Just give it time. It took months and months to put on the weight, and it will take some months to get it off.
Patience.

At the risk of being unpopular, with the exception of Dave, virtually no-one here knows what they're talking about.

Doing that much cardio is bad. I know you're probably thinking weight loss is proportional to effort or something, but it ain't. Listen to Dave.

Hi PinkCarnation, hey - the 1st point is to not overdo it. Two years ago I purchased a treadmill - I used to run quite a bit years ago, but let myself go.

Anyway, getting back into it - while there are 4 short pre-set programs that last 20 - 30 minutes, the most effective is one I developed. 5 miles at 3.5 mph (I'm in the US - not sure what the kph equivalent is). This lasts about 86 minutes. This isn't fast by any means, but the point here is that half of it is done at full incline - this really targets the waistline - you feel the effects the same day!! I break it up into 3 sections - flat for 1/2 mile, full incline for 1 mile, flat for 3/4 mile, full incline for 3/4 mile, flat 3/4 mile, full incline 3/4 mile, flat 1/2 mile.

I dropped 25 pounds and two inches off of my waistline!! My doctor is really happy with me - I'm in a healthy weight catagory!!

I wouldn't do the 5 miles every day - at most 2-3 times a week. If you must run every day, do some of the 20 - 30 minute programs in between. Let your body catch up.

It just dawned on me - if you're in London - why would you refer to the distance in miles????? hmmmmmm.......

Take care,

-Robert

Losing weight requires a combination of eating less and moving more. You've got the moving more part down, so now it's time to look at how much you eat. Keep an honest food diary for a few days, and figure out how many calories you're taking in. Then figure out how much you're expending in your daily activities. Try a web site like Fitday (www.fitday.com) to help you with these calculations, or consult with a dietician/nutritionist (in the US, I would say to look for someone who is a Registered Dietician...in most states anyone can call themselves a nutritionist with no training at all, but I don't know what the UK equivalent is).

Dave
nope. It's probably way too much if you're not used to running and eventually your body will adapt and that can be before the 30lbs route.

If you want to lose 30lbs (20% of your bodyweight) you need to eat clean, do some strength training, and get some cardio exercise. 20 min of cardio 3-5 times a week is plenty. 5 miles/day is a way to ask for knee and leg problems and doesn't lead to fat loss necessarily.

Combine good eating, weight workouts (you WILL NOT get big, it is physically impossible for a woman without drugs), and high intensity cardio and you'll be down in 4-6 weeks to your goal.

LSD (long, slow distance) running, etc. has been shown time and again to not be the fastest way to lose weight. For cardio, prefer intervals - basically sprints followed by rest. For example

30 sec running
1 min walking/jogging

repeat 8-10 times in a workout

use basic weight exercises - squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, high pull, snatch, crunches and situps. A good gym can show you the exercises and put together a SIMPLE routine Like:

Basic Workout:
Exercise A 1-5 times
Exercise B 1-5 times
repeat for 15 min
rest 5 min
Do exercise C and D same way

You pick something you can do 10 times and only do it 5 initially. As you get tired you rest when you need to within the 15 min work period and reduce the reps as needed to 4, 3, 2, 1.

Here's a sample two workouts to alternate:

Workout A
squat
row
--
deadlift
overhead press

Workout B
bench press
pull ups
--
lunge left foot
lunge right foot

alternate A and B on different days, get at least one day of rest (monday is A, wed is B, Fri is A, mon is B, etc.)

follow these basic steps and you'll be there and be lean and healthy in 4-6 weeks most likely

First, do not go by the distance run to judge if you will lose weight. In order for your body to burn fat as an energy source you must maintain an elevated heart rate for a minimum of 20 minutes. During the first 5 minutes or so your body burns carbohydrate and sugar stores in the body and not fat. So a 20 minute workout will burn fat for 15 minutes (plus your body will continue to use fat stores as energy for 20 -30 minutes after you stop exercising). Also, if you are not a runner already, 5 miles may be too far a goal. Start with a brisk walk 3-4 times a week for 20-30 minutes (not including stretching - before and after) and you will slowly see the effects. A safe rate for the body is 2-3 lbs a week - any more and you can throw your body into a state of shock. I hope this helps. Be patient - it takes time for your body to respond to a new routine. Good luck!

Yes, but consider this. Remeber that "Fat Man WAlking"m the 400 pound plus guy who walked right across America. Waling is great excercise and you should lose weight if you walk right across America. But he stopped in at lots of fast food resturants along the way. He did lose weight, but was very disapointed that he didn't lose more.
I could lose more wight than you by sitting on the couch and eating low-fat meals and eating right than if you ran 5 miles and you ate normal.
I suggest you run and watch eat right. Then you will lose weight. I never ate so much food as when I lost weight. I ate lots of low-fat meals more often and lost 70 pounds.

5 miles a day is a lot!!! You'll lose lot's of weight, ecspecially with the right diet (remember to eat less calories than you're burning). Dont forget to take a day or 2 of rest..you don't need to workout EVERY day!

You will eventually lose weight by running 5 miles each day. It will also depend very much on what food you take in of course. You will not lose weight if your intake of food increases, due to more exercise. However, the problem with weight loss is that you expect it to be so instant. If you run 5 miles every day for a whole week you feel you are really getting on top of the problem. Not so. You will probably put on weight. Your legs are toning with muscle and also your tummy is tightening. Do not expect to begin to actually lose weight until well into the second month, if not later. Eventually though you will not only lose weight but also tone all of your muscles. Running is extremely effective in the long term, as is walking. The thing is if you don't run but walk you must walk hills. This strenghens the leg muscles and tones you even more. I would advocate long hill walks, this tones the legs and inner thighs. You will lose weight, just stick at it. Do not expect instant results. Its a long term, life style changing exercise. Good luck, I wish you well.
