Is "DANCING" a good form of excersize?
I dont mean just moving, I mean hi-energy dancing like Janet Jackson stuff. Does Dancing work just as good as running or speed walking? if so, how often should I dance? Minutes per day?

my sister gained alot of weight with her second kid and she was home bound for a long time..she danced it not only took 60 pounds off but it kept her kids entertained as well..

For sure bud. It is great for many reasons:

1) high Energy dancing increases your heart rate and therefore you should do this (if high Energy only) for 20-30 minutes a day minimum.

2) It is fun to dance, lifting a weight or just running is not so fun (in my opinion), hence if you increase your enjoyment with the exercise your chances of repeating this healthy behaviour increases more.

3) I don't believe it is as high impact as runing since running is continual beating on the knees, feet, and shins especially. With dancing you are moving your whole body. This is great, however if your slamming your legs as hard as a runner is than you have a heavy impact on your joints and may run into some difficulties.

Yes dancing is a good form of exercise.

Its called aerobics.

Try about 45 minutes to a hour each day 30 minutes minimum.

Yes! Anything that involves Body Movement is good Exercise. If you enjoy dancing, then Dance you way to Good Physical Condition. Dancing involves All of your muscles and requires a great deal of coordination. Using a variety of Muscles to complete a single move is just as good or better than Tae Quan Do.

I use to dance all the time and I was skinny skinny and very firm from head to toe!

It's a great form of exercise because you tend to stretch before and after, which is great, and you burn a lot of calories doing something that you enjoy, so you are more likely to stick with the program.

A lot of people a lot of different things, but you have to find something that you like to do. If dancing is your thing, dance on! Like all cardio, try to go at least for 30 min per day, that gets your body into the fat burning mode, which will help you lose weight. Try it five days a week, and don't push yourself too hard too fast. Try going ten minutes a day, and then working it up over time.

It's better than speed walking, but not as good as running in terms of calories burned, but it's more fun than running, and you are probably less likely to suffer and injury from dancing.

Yes, it's a very good form of exercise. Better than walking because it's Aerobic exercise (any workout that gets your heart rate up and sweat going). The recommended amount of aerobic exercise is at least 20 minutes a day three days a week. This is good to start and then you can work up to 30 minutes a day to an hour five days a week once you're more in shape. Good luck!

Oh, I wanted to add something that my dad taught me while I was using his treadmill once... if you jog (or dance) on your toes for at least part of it, it will tone all of your leg muscles better. Just an added bonus. :)

Plus, dancing is just fun! It'll be good to keep your spirits up too, and good practice to show off at the clubs if that's something you enjoy!

Dancing is actually healthier that jogging or walking. While dancing you build flexibility and muscle you also work different muscles.

Any sort of physical activity can be exercise. The main thing is what you want to get out of it and the frequency and intensity of the activity. Discussion over how "good" it is as exercise is not necessarily relevant. Is swimming better exercise than running? Not really; both are good, but work different muscle groups in different ways. If you're wanting to get fit in preparation for running a marathon, then train by running, not dancing. However, if you're looking for a fun way to get good overall fitness, then strenuous dancing could be a good way to achieve it. As far as how long and how often, with pretty much any form of exercise you should aim for at least 30 minutes 3 to 4 times a week to get any benefit. Doesn't mean you have to dance that often; mix it up with other things for really good overall fitness. Also helps to reduce chance of you getting bored with it if you have some variety. If it was me I'd aim to dance twice a week and make sure that two other days a week I did something else (without locking in to any one thing for the other days) - swimming, brisk walk, running, cycling, whatever you happen to like.

Yes, that is exactly what classes like Jazzercise (and others) is...Dancing and having fun. I recently attended a 3 day conference with hundreds of people there and every 2 hours or so, the speaker would take a break and bring on an exercise guru. You know what we did, dance...in the aisle, around our chairs, hands in the air, twisting, turning...all very high Energy and fast movements. We did a lot of the old dances like the "Cabbage patch, the twist and shout," and many more I can't think of right now. It was fun and we felt like we had taken a 15 minute walk by the time we were done. Dance when the mood strikes. Seems that everything I read and hear tells you to get 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week. You can break it up into 10 or 15 minutes increments to get your 30 minutes . Have fun!!!

Dancing is great exercise - mostly because if you like it, you will continue to do it. I dance with my 2 year old niece until I can't breathe!

its very good exercise, it gives you great cardio exercise.

i would say 1 hour to 2 hours a day like 3 to 5 days a week

it depends how serious of a dancer you are

Dancing is a fantastic way to exercise. Try three times a week for thirty minutes or so. There are some GRAET dance workouts out there. Check one out.

actually it is. if you do your dancing for about an hour a day you will have a great work out and burn a lot of calories. and if you hold in your stomach while your dancing you will be working on your abs. its a little harder to do, but hey every little bit helps right?

dancing is definetly good exercise, you should try for around 20 - 30 mins a day every day or longer with a day in between to see results, then again as long as you can handle it dance as long as you want and have fun :)
