I smoked for a lot longer than that and I gave up overnight 4 years ago. All I did was see an advert on the TV where the person smokes the cigarette and fat drops out of it - absolutely gross! Every time you have a cigarette about a teaspoon's worth of fatty deposit goes into your arteries or lungs. Put me off straight away so try thinking about that! P.S. I know it's not that easy for most people but think positive. The best thing in the world is not having your clothes or breath smell like an ashtray. Good luck. You can do it!!

I applaud your efforts, so far. For me after 42 years of 2 packs a day, it was Welbutrin-xl (sp). You have to be ready to quit, though. I set a quit date, started taking the pills two weeks prior to that date, and then on the night before the day,I poured water over the cigarettes I had left. From that days to this, some 5 years later, I have not smoked. I had cravings for quite some time, but after quittng the pills in three months, it got easier. Try it!

Hi there, I am a smoking cessation advisor, if you visit a local clinic, maybe even at your doctors surgery they can advise you of the nearest centre.
You can obtain not only patches, but lozengers, gum, inhalators or evey Zyban with your doctors approval. Not only have you a large selection you only have to pay for perscription at £6.50 I think it is now, per item rather then over the counter at £20 odd. They will give you counsiling to help you.
You can do it only if you really want to. You need to change your head. This will also mean your lifestyle. They can help you manage and deal with the cravings but only you can be sucssessful at quiting. They have loads of information that will help you.
The patches can cause alot of people rashes. They need to be moved each time applied, but even this is too much for some people. Maybe try gum, or if you work somewhere you can not chew you can get small mints that wont be noticable. Inhalator, like a pretend cigarette, gives you the same hand action that has clean Nicotine tables in. Keeps your hands busy!
Good luck, you can do it if you really want too.

Make a plan
Set a quit date.
Change your environment. (Get rid of your cigarettes and don't let people smoke in your home or car.)
Review your past quit attempts. Think about what worked and what didn't.
Make a list of reasons to quit.
Once you quit don't smoke--not even a puff!
Change your routine to reduce your stress
Try to distract yourself from urges to smoke. Talk to someone, go for a walk, or find a new hobby.
When you try to quit, change your routine. Use a different route to work. Drink tea instead of coffee. Eat breakfast in a different place.
Do something to reduce your stress. Take a hot bath/shower, exercise, read a book, call a friend, or go to a movie.
Plan something enjoyable to do every day. Reward yourself since you are doing a good thing for yourself and those around you.
Drink a lot of water and other fluids.
Ask your health care provider for advice first
Medications can help you stop smoking and lessen the urge to smoke.
Ask your health care provider for advice and carefully follow the instructions on the package.
Approved medications can double your chances of quitting for good.
Everyone who is trying to quit may benefit from using a medication. If you are pregnant, nursing, under 18 years of age, smoking fewer than 10 cigarettes per day, or have a medical condition, talk to your doctor or other health care provider.
Hope This Help!

Hypnosis
Subliminal messaging (a tape playing during the night saying 'you don't need cigarettes, you don't need to smoke' etc etc)
The gum
Sheer will power
Association. When you want to smoke, look at something completely gruesome thereby associating smoking with something that makes you feel ill

Find a decent hypnotherapist.
See if you can get that treatment on the NHS or your personal health insurance.
Hypnotherapy hepls you take control of your cravings. It's possible to do self-hypnosis with a good book and lots of practice too.

hi....i stopped smoking 5 months ago....i was smoking 30-40 a day,i'd been smoking for 32 years....so if i can do it,any one can.....and by the way,it was my first time of trying...
there were 2 things i did:
1 started using Nicotine inhalors.....as i missed the hand to mouth action...also drinking water from a bottle helped and still does.
2 i read a book that had been recommended to me......it was called the easyway to stop smoking written by alan carr.....it changes the way you think about smoking and about stopping.....i dont know anyone who has read it from cover to cover and not stopped.
i'm not saying that either is a miracle cure....but for me it worked......good luck.....what ever way you choose i hope it works.

yeah i smoke too and have tried patches. i got burning and nausea with mine. the best thing is to phone nhs direct and speak to someone. alternatively, go camping for a fortnight where there is no shops. it's very very hard to stop. i've tried loads of times. keep trying and don't despair!

Absolutely everyone I know who has quit by using an "aid" (gum, patches, fake cigarette, pills) has started again.
I was in exactly the same situation as you a few years ago. Been smoking for 6 years, smoked 10-12 a day. My father-in-law collapsed at his own wedding, unable to breathe - he'd been a smoker all his life. My husband and I quit smoking the very next morning.
We went cold turkey, and the only help we had was each other. It was almost competitive - kind of like "anything you can do, I can do too!". You've got to really want it. Unfortunately for most people, quitting because you know you should just isn't a strong enough motivator.
So my advice is, keep trying, and find someone to quit with. They can hold you up when you're feeling weak, and you can do the same for them. It worked for me.
Good luck!
